Walking downtown Detroit at night. Explore the Greektown Hollywood Casino area on a Friday night. The city vibe is bumping with cheerful crowds, loud motorcycles and busy restaurants. Enjoy the ride.

The people in suburbs saying cities are unsafe are the one who don’t realize a busy city street will always be safer than an empty rural or suburban road. There’s a reason horror movies mainly take place in small towns and suburbs, so do most mass shootings
@Leonthotskys
@Leonthotskys Жыл бұрын
@Hosea Matthews a busy street literally will stop crimes as they happen, taken from someone who’s lived in 4 nyc neighborhoods over 6 years. An empty suburban or rural stroad or street will have people fly by active crime scenes in their cars without stopping. If you’re a criminal looking to get away with your crimes, you choose empty, rural or suburban areas, just look at the statistics for the last 40 years, crime in big cities has consistently fallen to historic lows(pre pandemic), while crime in suburbs and rural areas has risen steadily. Los Angeles, built as a largely suburban city, has had one of the nations highest crime rates for decades. And as for safety, mass shootings (non targeted killing sprees) are an almost entirely suburban and rural phenomenon. Just take the latest horror show in Raleigh NC, the gunman, a disturbed young white male from the suburbs, most likely driven insane by the isolation suburbs produce, killed 15 of his neighbors, for no discernible reason

I lived in and around Detroit for 4 years. Stayed downtown a for a little while, then Roseville, then moved to the east side (Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood). I loved hanging out Downtown so much. Met so many awesome people and had some pretty wild adventures. There's some serious fun to be had in the city when you get to know some people. All night after hours bars/clubs, outside parties in some random industrial neighborhoods. Glad I got to spend a good portion of my 20s in this city. Hope it continues to improve and prosper!

I traveled to Detroit from Chicago a few years ago. It was the coldest days of the year, so not a lot happening on the streets, but I was still amazed by how much the city had to offer. Not just in downtown either. The media has spent years painting Detroit as hopeless wasteland. I saw some rundown buildings, but "hopeless" was absolutely not the vibe I got from the city. Watching this, it's nice to be reminded that the motor city is just like any other major American city Maybe not as crowded as, say New York or Los Angeles (or Chicago). But like would that really be such a bad thing?

Yes, at its height, the streetcar system had, I believe, 528 miles of track, so you could go anywhere in and around this town. It would be great to bring back at least some of that. The pre-WWII buildings of Detroit are some of the most interesting around. I wish that sometimes people would do walks and drones in other areas, like Cass Park/Corrdior, DIA/DPL area, and the New Center. Detroit is definitely not just a downtown.

We would shoot right on Woodward Avenue on the weekends sometimes and there would be no cars or people anywhere and all the storefronts were vacant. We could probably have shot guns off and nothing would have happened it was so deserted. Glad to see it back! I spent a-lot of time in Greektown on weekends in High School! I miss Pizza Papalis!

@@queenmccauley4534 that's amazing. I feel the same way about my city, Toronto in Canada. There's the good and the bad, but it's my home, and I love it. Detroit has been a great place to visit. I'm looking forward to more trips where I can explore deeper into it's culture. Especially the music scene.

I've gone to Detroit a few times and it's pretty great but you can cross the wrong side of the tracks fast. I went to a museum with my sister and when we left and turned a corner it was nothing but scorched buildings and bulletproof glass.

NYC really doesn’t look that bad right now it looked WAY worse in the 70s and 80s whenever the city entered a fiscal crisis when our nation was experiencing stagflation.

I grew up in Detroit, and this is the vibe I always grew up in. Now, just imagine every once inawhile a bust ass idiot in a ghetto-mobile drives by and yells CHECKYOSELFOOL and fires random shots in the air, then moves on. The thing is everyone would only focus on the idiot, and be like see thats detroit for you. So in my mind this vibe here is Detroit, and the image of Detroit, while real, is not the "REAL" detroit, this is.

Sorry if this is long, but I feel I have to say a few things: first, a lot of people who haven't spent time here say "oh, it's just downtown that's now nice" because they've heard others say that, but this is no longer true. The revitalization of Detroit is intentionally being done from the city core (downtown - where a good portion of money to fund the improvements is generated by way of business) outward, one step at a time. A few examples: Midtown was the first huge improvement after downtown, and from my vantage point, areas like Jefferson-Chalmers and others followed. Rivertown (warehouse district) while nice today, was basically a wasteland in the 1990s (other than a pretty cool post-punk club that was there, it was like an abandoned ghost town that was pretty unsafe to be wandering at night). Corktown (Detroit's oldest still-remaining neighborhood) was ugly, and slowly dying & decaying with little hope. All of these places are nice today and getting nicer every year. So, why can't the bad areas (yes, there are plenty still) change quicker to your liking? - I'll tell you why. Because Detroit is larger than Manhattan, Boston, and San Francisco combined, yet lacks the tax base of even one of those cities - and a strong tax base is largely what pays for improvements. You think you could improve a major city overnight which was neglected and allowed to decay for 50+ years under such circumstances? - you're an unrealistic fool if you think you could. Thankfully, Mayor Duggan had the good sense to offer tax incentives get more businesses to move to Detroit and get involved in improving things* (Dan Gilbert/Quicken/Rocket, being the biggest/most publicized example), which has also helped pay for a lot, and it was enough for Gilbert (and others like him) to realize it was a money-making opportunity to start buying up decaying buildings, renovating them, and re-purposing them to generate money (again, which generates tax revenue), which helped speed up the improvements a bit more....but it's still a slow process. But Detroit is absolutely headed in the right direction...and since it's 2013 bankruptcy, has accumulated NO debt, and worked within a balanced budget. *note: Dennis Archer was a good mayor who previously tried to implement these types of plans and incentives too, but he faced a corrupt and incompetent city council that blocked his every attempt to fix things back in those days, till he threw up his hands in disgust and decided not to run again, and moved on with his life.
