Does any wonder how this could have happened it Detroit? Want to know the history as to how all this happened? In the 1950s, Detroit's population back then was well over 2 million. Back then it was known as an upstanding city, the heart of America's automobile industry and a great place to raise a family. During WW2, it's manufacturing power practically helped the US win the war with it's endless supplies. Beautiful suburban neighborhoods and parks, seen in this video, surrounded downtown Detriot. It was prosperous and mostly safe. Then politicians and companies fucked over the car industry, preferring to buy and make cars overseas. Soon, White Flight also happened and the population of Detroit fell. The Whites moved out of these neighborhoods and the Blacks moved in. Now, after decades of Democrat rule and leftist policies, Detroit is the shithole it is today. Practically all leftist cities in America full of crime and these dangerous neighborhoods have a similar history.

As a Canadian, I used to cross the border to Detroit to visit my refugee grandmother who was placed in 7 mile. I remember that as soon as we crossed the border, we were in a scary different universe where we had to lock the doors and not make eye contact with anyone as we drove to her. When I FIRST was taken through these streets to visit her, I was so confused as to why ALL of the houses were half burned down and abandoned. After spending a few nights there, I quickly realized they weren't abandoned. People lived in them. In those conditions. I couldn't wait to go back to Canada. It was always and still remains such a scary odd country, the US.

@@flynnshigley9913 Well, yes, I was speaking about it regionally - Detroit, not all of Michigan which I haven't seen. I say at the end that I still view the US as an odd country because I've since traveled to many states for work and even lived in a couple for short period of time, and while they aren't as bad as Detroit, they all share a common eeriness and distinct difference to major Canadian cities which are cleaner and generally feel safe. I've had people, unprovoked, display anger and ugliness (seemingly normal people). I have seen people walking around with unconcealed guns, which as a Canadian makes NO sense to me. I've seen a lot over there in my years. I know as a US citizen, you might want to get defensive, but as someone who literally travels the world mostly for work, it's best to take in what I'm saying. It's a shared opinion from others around the world as well. Also - the propaganda you view on American television is extremely worrisome.

Houses are expected to last for several decades, to the extreme cases of centuries-old houses that are still living spaces. Automobiles used to be expected to stay in use for about eight years, nowadays it's more like fifteen. The turnover rate of automobiles is much faster than that of homes.

As a MI resident. 1 we made cars ur welcome. So finding a used one is easy. The newer cars alot of people are "incorporated" and those cars are tax write offs. Its why the can afford it live in a half burnt down house, but can also afford to lease a nicer car than I've ever owned.... Its a weird juxtaposition. Its not what they value. Its what they have access to. We got cars everywhere mechanics everywhere, wether u got a crack habbit or not... Get a car in MI you can keep the mfer or get incorporated and lease a new one.... Those house anything of value besides the land and the potential they hold has all already stripped away. No pipes no a/c units ferneces ect. If you can grab it and scrape it its gooone out those houses. Thats why the bricks and the dry wall remain. Also why no one buys em to fix em. You gotta re wire. Re pipe everyone. Tearing em down destroys the historical value of what was once the nations richest city less than 75 years ago. Dont get me started on that shit.

I am a Detroiter and I can say this. The auto insurance has always been extremely high here in Detroit. If I live in the suburbs to have full coverage were my brother live it cost $150. Living in Detroit with the same car not having full coverage it cost $600-$800 a month. Some people can't afford to pay for high auto insurance and a high car note because of bad or not enough credit and other daily life expenses they are responsible for. The city in the past had built a jail and needed to fill it. So, the police would stop ppl they knew didn't have insurance write them a ticket and take them to jail. Now you have a record when you get out and your limited to what jobs you can apply for and get. I remember hearing about this because it is not my life.

I think the average is $300 to $400 for full coverage. This depends on if you didn't have insurance when you applied, your credit (bs outright), and your coverage. Michigan now has a choice of how much they pay for each level of insurance. I go through Geico and when this was passed into law, Geico pulled out of Michigan and grandfathered in those who were currently enrolled. There are a lot of people who have full coverage and don't realize they can decide how much coverage they need. That being said I am an addiction counselor working in Detroit and I get the fact that jails are being filled with good citizens. This is why we fought so hard to eliminate marijuana probation. We have to work together to make this City great.

My boyfriend grew up on 9 Mile in Eastpointe, and while the houses are small and the roads suck ass, the difference when you go from 9 Mile to 8 Mile is incredible. I definitely try to stay away from Detroit unless I have to, people drive like maniacs and it feels very unsafe unfortunately. It’s so sad.

Italian here. We grew up dreaming about michigan's rich hoods, with well kept gardens, large cute houses and family cars in the parkway. I bet this was once a white hood. I don't know america enough to understand racial segregation but there is clearly a cultural issue here. It is not about skin or ethnicity, is about education and mindset. I have a lot of family that live there, this is also where my parents grew up. This is the reason why they moved away, they didn’t want my siblings and I to grow up in the hood based on their experiences. My mom tells me all the stories of when she would hear gunshots all the time, sometimes when she would get home from somewhere and she and her family would have to rush in the house because they didn’t know where they were coming from, she even heard them when she was trying to sleep at nights.

It is obvious many of these were at some point magnificent homes, and still could be. I noticed that wherever the grass has been cut ,lawns maintained and the trash picked up it looked decent but these were the exception, so much trash everywhere, the roads have been left derelict by the municipality, the boulevards , sidewalks are lined by weeds, brush and wild overgrowth, broken windows everywhere. A gas station without the gas pumps ( says it all). Really depressing, paints a sad picture of Detroit. This might not be a fair observation but not a City I would visit.

The city takes care of its interests, but outside of true infrastructure (roads, drains, water supply, and utilities) the residents must take responsibility gor their neighborhood. And when folks arent self motivated, like in all the big cities, the neighborhoods fall to pieces like this. My street (St John, between Freer and Central) has become a sespool due to poor quality of residents.

If you are stuck in a place like this, literally save up 200$ for a greyhound ticket to anywhere. Thats what I did. took a couple years of homeless counseling but there are people in every state willing to help homeless people. For example i went to Bangor in maine into the homeless shelter. I chose maine for the climate, lobster, ocean, and safety, but you can go anywhere. There is no reason to be stuck in this kind of place. In america, you can just leave where you are at any time, you have that right. The entire country is available to choose from. You can even go to hawaii or alaska with a 1 way plane ticket. I have my own place now.

Jefferson, from the late 1930's to 1967. They closed it down, after the 67', riots, when the area, got torched..
