Man, that two rotor thumping sound. When I was a little kid in the 80s they still used Huey’s in the ANG, they would fly over my house a lot in the summer. I remember working in the yard or washing cars with my dad who’s a Air Cav Vietnam Vet. He could hear those Huey’s coming way before I could. He’d say “ you hear that?” Id say “no, what?” He’d say “the birds a coming” Then a few minutes later I’d hear them coming. When they’d fly overhead he said the hair would stand up on the back of his neck.

I live in Melbourne, Australia and about 5 years ago I was living in West Heidelberg a Northeastern suburb of Melbourne not far from Northland Shopping Center. Now, one slightly overcast Sunday morning I woke up to the distinctive sound of an Iroquois helicopter but it wasn't really coming or going? I'm not in Vietnam and I'm not near the Army base so what the heck is going on? I staggered to the front door to have a look around. Looking over towards Northland, I could see through the trees and hear a bright yellow Iroquois helicopter hovering and moving back and forth between the main road and the centre of the shopping center. Driving over I discovered that an Air Conditioning mob were using the helicopter as a sky crane to move large air con units from the car park to the roof top plant areas. Interesting way to wake up on a Sunday morning.

fun fact, as some might not know: that tumping sounds are actually sonic booms from the two rotor tips, as they're moving so fast, that they localy create airstreams which move over sonic speed
@BadenAirTraffic4 жыл бұрын
yes this is reason - and I like this sound 👍
@michaelh.67732 жыл бұрын
Do you have more info about this? I thought that a large limitation of forward airspeed for helicopters was that the blade tips can't withstand breaking the speed of sound.
@OverlyCuriousEngineer Жыл бұрын
Highly unlikely. Blades are specifically designed not to break the sound barrier otherwise they become extremely inefficient.
@OverlyCuriousEngineer Жыл бұрын
The real reason is the two bladed system and Blade vortex interaction. During some regimes and forward speeds, the tip may reach Mach 1 which causes that distinct blade slap however during normal flight the tips don't exceed mach 1.
@Stormrider-Flight Жыл бұрын
This is nonsense. Utter nonsense. Blade Tips of the Uh1 travel at around 480knots (48ft@324rpm, do your own math here). Rotor blades breaking sound barrier is called compressibility state and that should NEVER happen for it will get you into all sorts of trouble :)
