So, interesting that I came across this. I have a 94 Silverado, 305 auto. Now on the second trans maybe 15k on it since rebuild and the same symptoms happened on both where it feels like it free wheels and then SLAMS into gear like someone rear ended me. Both trans can't have the same problem even after rebuild. SO, I'm going to give the TPS a try and see if it remedies the slam. I seem to notice it more when I use the AC, which might make sense due to different throttle/rpm demand on the engine.

I'll relate a strange one. My wife had a 2000 pontiac grand am gt. It started shifting hard enough to jerk your head back. If you put it in reverse it would jerk so hard that you thought it was going to break mounts. Also the guage cluster would go erratic. It was three days later before the check engine light came on, at that time I used the OBD scan tool, it only showed higher thaan normal voltage from the engine temperature sensor. This part cost 12$. I replaced the temp sensor and everything started working correctly. Imagine that..... The dianostic system is an open loop wired system, one sensor can affect other functions of the processor. It does happen.

Thanks for posting this my grand prix is doing this exact same thing.
@mrbreezeet1 Жыл бұрын
Did you have a Check engine light and TPS associated codes, or did you just decide to try a new TPS? Here's where I'm at! 2001 Grand Prix with a 3.1-liter motor, started idling high after good and warmed up. No codes at the time though. When motor would idle too high, 4T65E trans would shift super late under light throttle. About 25 MPH and 2,500 RPM before it would hit 2nd. gear. Was OK the next day. 3rd. day, high idle and late shift again! This time the check engine light did come on. Code P0121. Scanner TPS angle percentage at idle shows 0 sometimes, and sometimes 0.39% and ~ 100% at WOT. One time while sitting there idling fine, ~ 700 RPM, all at once the idle kicked up to ~1,300 RPM all by itself and I looked at the scanner, now TPS angle percentage went up to 2.75%. From my readings it looks to me like the sensor IS receiving the 5V reference, and my ground in good, and my reference voltage is changing and being sent back to the ECM. My voltmeter is at my buddy's garage right now, so I could not do any voltage testing at the TPS connector itself. I'm ready to take a chance based on my findings, and just install a new TPS. What do you think?

@@alexsbikesandmotors Yeah, I did replace it last week, actually F'd up worse for a while. Then went back to same issue. It's intermittent though. Alex I'm going to give that a try and report back to you and the viewers. I had a different problem with one of those throttle position switches on a Cougar I had years ago and replace it three times before I took the TB off the vehicle to see what was going on. Turns out that the throttle shaft wobbled terribly because the bushings for it were worn out. I put in new bushings and a new sensor and never had that problem again. Sadly, I had so many other problems with this pile of crap I never bought another Ford product again!

@siaripop74 жыл бұрын
@@alexsbikesandmotors Well, it was a great idea and I changed out the throttle position sensor but it didn't correct the problem. However, it does tell me the problem is somewhere in that area. I recently had an antifreeze leak between the intake manifold and heads that was repaired by a NAPA dealer. They had to remove the intake manifold so they may not have connected something properly because it is an intermittent problem. If I make right turns it will go away until I make a left turn, or so it seems. Along with the hard shifting is a slight lack of power, like a clogged injector, or one not getting the right signal for fuel.

I have a GMC Savana 1500 Van. I had a check engine light come on recently and took the vehicle to autozone to get the code read and it told us that it was an O2 sensor, which is still the case because I found out the vehicle has 4 of them and until i have further diagnostics to find out which sensor needs to be replaced... I then took the vehicle on a 400+ mile trip and experienced hard shifting upon my return. I am going to replace the TPS just to make sure it's not an added stress until i have further diagnostics ran.. Thanks for the advice.

I have a similar problem on my Hummer H2. Right now it is not shifting at all from 1 to 2. Previously would do so if car would have a speed with very high RPM, then let to rid idle without any push on acceleration and a gentle push on pedal would make a shift from 1 to 2. What hints me that it may not be trany is that actually in first gear, transmission is running very strong, even up the hill (Unlike my other prior experience with failing transmissions, where main symptom was sliding or un willing of car to have a go, even on flat surface. So do you think my hummer problem is also Throttle Position Sensor? And if so, the hummer h2 sensor is similar to what you show here or its entirely different. Anyways thanks for your great video & sharing knowledge, especially that this can potentially save thousands of dollars.

on the 4.3 it's on the drivers side of the throttle body right in the middle of the engine. Find the air intake hose, follow that to the throttle body on the intake manifold and that's where it is. I have another video on how to change the tps sensor.

my 2001 Suburban 4x4 just today started not wanting to upshift, no SES, no codes that I can see. I've already had intermittent service 4WD, and was going to get to that, unfortunately today when I went to go see neighbor it was in 4Low, and after the offroad portion ended of my run ended and I got to pavement I noticed high rpm's, drove to Post Office trying to Isolate symptoms other than the transfer case not shifting, it was DRAMATICALLY HANGING IN GEAR BETWEEN SHIFTS, and would only upshift after coasting, but mostly hanging in 1st too long and 2nd too long, not sure if it was getting into 3rd and4th at all, kind of hard when in 4Lo. Any clues as to where I should start?
@alexsbikesandmotors Жыл бұрын
check fluid level, check for codes (even if check engine light is off), disconnect battery for 5 mins to reset pcm. If none of that helps you can try replacing the tps.

@alexsbikesandmotors5 жыл бұрын
On this truck there was no check engine light. But I've replaced TPS on chevy trucks a couple of times and sometimes you'll get a check engine light with p0122 code
@peteloomis84565 жыл бұрын
Most transmission problems will not throw a check engine light at all being it's not related to the emissions or engine management system ! This is why it cost so much to have your electronic transmission checked at a transmission shop because they have a special scanner just for finding these problems on electronically controlled automatic transmissions ! If you ever look it's very difficult to even find such a scanner unless you look into the Snap on catalog & it will cost you thousands to buy this scanner alone then having to up grade it every few years ! So this is why almost 99.9 % of the time a check engine light that comes on will have nothing to do with a transmission related fault . This here fix can help because the transmission uses the TPS sensor as a guide when to make it's shifts by the position of the TPS when driving & if its worn out which is common that will send false readings to not only the transmission ECM but also how the injectors are working timing & others related because basically all a TPS is in a way is a reostat on the inside & certain spots will wear out causing a bad spot that will send a faulty reading as the throttle is opened & closed with the dead spot not sending the correct reading to the ECM !

I had a check engine light pop up after my battery died and they said it's for a TPS sensor. The guy told me I had to buy a whole new throttle body so I didn't make the purchase yet. I'm wondering if I can just buy the sensor. Mine is a 2003 suburban 5.3. I'm experiencing a slight hard shift from first to second but a super sensitive throttle pedal.
@alexsbikesandmotors Жыл бұрын
Yes you can buy just the sensor. No reason to replace the whole throttle body. Those 5.3s had a couple different kinds of tps sensors but all are replaceable

98 Chevy Silverado 1500 drove fine got in it the next day an had no reverse what can I check
@alexsbikesandmotors4 жыл бұрын
First thing I would do is check the fluid level in the trans. Let the engine warm up, then check the trans dipstick with the engine idling. If it isn't low on fluid, then I would disconnect the battery for 10 or 15 mins to reset the computer. Then reconnect battery and see if it has reverse. If that doesn't fix it then you've gotta remove the trans pan at a minimum. Could be the whole trans is shot.

It was jumping like shuddering when shifting up. It caught all the gears fine but it was just a hard shift. Kinda like when you release the clutch too quick in a manual trans car. Replacing the TPS made the trans shift fine again. Like basically as good as new.

I have a 2000 2500 Silverado been driving it like that for years but will start off jus fine everyday I could drive in the city all day long so long as I didn't go over bout 45mph but as soon as I'd get on the highway and come back to a stop it start shifting hard but if I pulled over and shutoff the engine it would work jus fine again been scratchen my head for years on that 1 maybe I'll try the old TPS sensor
@alexsbikesandmotors5 жыл бұрын
Could be a bad TPS. Definitely it's an electrical problem if stopping and restarting the engine fixes it. My blazer did a similar thing when the TPS started to go bad. When I first started the truck it would shift hard, but if i drove for a couple of minutes and shut it off and restarted it, it would shift normal again. Replacing the TPS fixed it.
