4R70W No Forward Gear

Good video. I’m in this situation. 04 grand marquis. Paid $500 to an old guy and hauled it home. I’m an old retired HD mechanic so figured I’d attempt it myself. Forward clutches have zero friction material on them. The cage or shell that the forward clutch pack fits into is burnt black. No physical damage but the black colour has me concerned

Hey and thank you for watching. If your forward frictions have no material left on them, the fluid pressure to the forward clutch apply piston was lost. This could come from a defective apply piston, apply piston seal, or a valve body issue. Inspect the apply piston seal for cuts or knicks. As for the discoloration, it happens when the frictions get so hot from slippage. As long as the apply piston and drum are not physically damaged (cracked or broken) it can be reused. Hey thanks for responding wasn’t expecting that. Think I figured it out but will look into your suggestions. Trans was low on oil. Front pump seal worked its way out and leaked like crazy. Bought some forward frictions and steels today. Piston seals too and a few other seals. Appreciate your input

I found another problem or maybe THE problem. The front seal on the pump had worked itself almost all the way out. Which is why it leaked. Gonna JB weld new seal in housing. BTW I got new pump housing seal, filter, tailshaft gasket,front and rear seals, 5 steels and frictions and piston seals for the forward clutch $100 just like you said.

I bought Ford expedition and don't knows much about it but it can only go reverse not going forward at all, can I just change the torque and only?

What would cause 1st gear to not engage without revving up first? I put it in drive and it's like in neutral. Once it gets above 2500, it slams into gear. All other gears are fine.

I have a 2000 F150 4.6 4r70w and all of a sudden it's just very slow going into Ford if I rev it a little bit give it a second it starts to catch and then once it catches it's fine reverse is perfect and it shifts fine once it's moving it just takes a minute to get into forward honestly I haven't changed the fluid in the filter and probably 3 years that I've owned the truck which equates to about 100,000 MI I would like to start with that and then maybe wonder if I've got some sticking solenoids or clogged valve body or something to that effect once it's in gear it runs great any opinion

i have an 03 f150 w the same trans but i left a stop sign normal throttle and everything and at about 15 mph after my back tires just locked and and now when i shift into any gear there’s no movement. i dropped the trans pan and my filter was sitting in it. but it’s almost like it just stuck in park but if i give it some gas it’ll actually start to jump. any advice?

I have a 2002 ford f150 with 4r70w and it was randomly slipping and out of the blue id go to take off from a stop light and it just had no power and would shutter and would habe to baby throttle up to 20 or 30 mph and then something would kick in and itd take off and dribe normal for a day or two then itd randomly happen again and there was a bearing whining type sound throughout the week or two this was going on and the it would only have good power if i was at 45 mph or higher but if i started slowing down below that and went to speed up it was shuttering and had little powere

How do I know the transmission type it has the number RF-6L3P-7006-AA folded on the left side

2000 F150 5.4 I have every gear, no hard shifts just hesitation from the tranny to shift like it forgot what rev to shift at. I ride motorcycles also so I'm familiar with how shifting feels and that's what it feels like to me.

Hey and thanks for watching. It sounds to me like you have a valve body issue. I have seen the separator plate crack below the accumulator. Also, the check balls inside the valve body can wear and shrink making them pass through the separator plate. I have put shift improver kit in transmissions with these symptoms and have successfully worked. I hope this helps and if you need anymore information, please feel free to contact me.

Thanks for the info this is my issue. I had my fuel pump replaced by the chevy dealer on my 95 transsm ws6 nighthawk. Very low mileage. When i got it back the rear end was 2 inches out on drivers side and an inch in on passenger side. I brought this to their attention so they put it on diagnostic said nothing wrong i parked the car until i could get it legal. When i got legal and drove it. With no warning no slippage i hit a bump lost all gears except reverse. . If i raise the car with all tires up goes into gear put it back down no gears but reverse. We are talking very low miles maybe 10.000. So got a ny ideas.

Check your rear end differential. Theres a possibility the forward gears might be worn out

J have toyota camry1992 2.2 automatic transmitions. No forward run or very hard but in reverse run super.J want to change fluid and fluid filter because is almost black.Can j put ATF sintetic fluid + lukas stop slip additive or j have to put dexron 2 with us recommended for this car

My 2007 Ford f150 with a 4.2 motor and a 4rw70 transmission stop going reverse I replaced it with another transmission from 206 and I started driving it and all the sudden you just something pop and you just wouldn't go go forward would like to Indian star leaking I took it about to put this new seal in it now it just only goes in reverse what could be the problem

I really appreciate this video. I am fully convinced that this is the problem with my 02 f150. I watched other videos of people saying it is the shift linkage or a celeniod. But it doesnt seem that simple. It goes into park. It goes into reverse, and nuetral... after that, the gear indicator shows if can go into drive, 1, 2, etc.. But you do not feel that familiar slight bump as it goes into those forward gears. It just feels like it never leaves nuetral. I do not want to fix this the cheap way. I work on my own vehicles doing the basic "pepboy" level repairs, but the major things like engine and transmission rebuilds i leave to the proffesionals. I probably could, but prefer not to. (I am an electrician by trade.) My question to you is, For a rebuild on this transmission with upgraded parts that will make it last another 100k miles or more.. what should that cost look like?

Thanks for watching. Thats sounds like the problem you are having. We see this issue fairly common with these model transmissions. The transmissions that we build, all have a HEG (High Energy Graphite) friction kit installed. These kits are a upgrade from factory and hold up well with mild performance and towing applications. The average cost of this kind of complete rebuild at our shop will run you around $1,500. I hope this helps.

Great video, could you point me in the right path please. So I bought a 06' Ford Expedition Eddie B version with 4×4drive 160,000 miles on it. A code came up on it P2106, P0720. A week or 2 ago I noticed at 60mph it would lag, and my OD light would blink. We yesterday I dropped my daughter off and it drove fine, till I dro e away and the needle stayed at 20mph and not move in drive then a sec late it moved 4 feet and then BOOM no drive only Reverse. While waiting for the tow I tried moving and lost reverse ..tow brought it home and i had reverse again still no drive..any ideas.. I brought this Truck because the trans went on my 08' buick..$$$ wise I can't afford to drop a new trans in because I bought the truck and bills.. I depend on my truck to be able to work. I help people who love with mental health and drug addiction so I drive all over the city...please help

I forgot to mention that 2 days ago when I started it , it made this Whiny noise but it was also 3 degrees outside and it sat all night..once I put it in drive it stopped so I figured it was possibly a belt with the cold..

Then it was doing it everytime i slowed down or went to take off and i would have to rev it up to 2 or 3 grand and hold it there for a couole seconds and itd slowly pick up and take off. Finally lost all forwad movment but reverse works perfect. Could this be a failed stator clutch in the torque converter?

Hello and thanks for watching. The issue you are describing does not sound like a failed stator in the torque converter. If it had failed, you would not have a reverse gear either. The issue sounds like a leaking valve body gasket or an apply seal. The whining noise you stated you heard could be from the front pump. It makes a whining noise when it is not pumping strictly fluid but rather fluid and air. Which in turn, can cause low fluid pressure and cause a clutch pack to slip. This will eventually cause the slipping clutches to burn the friction material off and will no longer apply a given clutch pack, losing a particular gear.

This 95' F150 was a daily driven PU brought to me for rusty leaking brake lines and sat 5 months over the winter. Then getting into move it I heard fluid flowing but no forward movement and has strong reverse ! Fluid color and smell is good ! Any cheap ways to possibly check it out before putting transmission ?

Hello from Costa Rica! Does 4R75E does the same problem? I just bougth a 05 Expedition Eddie Bauer from Copart, it arreives with no forward, only reverse and now the 4x4 high and 4x4 low are blinking three times... Thanks for your help!

Hello and thanks for watching. Yes the 4R70 and the 4R75 are almost the same transmission with the exception being a few internal differences. If your 4R75 only has reverse gear, than your forward clutch could be the culprit. I hope this helps.

i have a 95 f150. 4r70w all gears work. my issue with it . after i crank it when putting into gear you dont feel it go into gear. but if i hold the brake and give it gas it builds up and then rolls. as going down the road it shifts all gears. but when i stop its like you feel it went into a sick mode. it revs up hi. and i have to repeat it self. my truck was fine until i had someone change my front seal. my name is buddy

Hello and thanks for watching. It sounds like you may have a leaking or blown out valve body gasket. Ford had an issue with the gaskets blowing out the side of the valve body. I would pull the valve body, being very careful not to damage the gasket, to see if it is damaged. The gasket typically will blow out on the outside edge of the valve body. If no damage is seen, put a new gasket, filter, and refill with fluid and see if that may have fixed your issue.

Yes that is a possibility. The input shaft on certain Ford transmissions were bad about stripping the torque converter out and causing a no forward and reverse condition.

man my 01 mustang just did this to me drove to the gas station wnet to leave noticed a hesitation into drive . but it did engage drive home less than 2 miles got in next morning back out the driveway go to d and nothing check fluid looks ok doesn't smell burnt and ive notice it is trying to move but just cant do it but reverse is there now ... probably have the same issue . or the forward drum possibly broke off at the snap ring ... someone said to check the 1 2 accumulater spring but that doesn't make sense to me any advice. i iny have experience with fords 6r 50 55 60 transmissions which are in the Lincoln suvs the ford fusions so any more advice before i take my transmission out in the next few days ?

I have a 2005 F-150 with 4r75e remanufactured. The new trans has a hard 1-2 shift intermittent and no codes. I changed the speed sensors and range selector during the install. Any ideas?

You might have to check the TPS sensor performance and the MAF sensor performance. These sensors along with the VSS calculate the engine load and increase/decrease shift pressure accordingly. If one of these sensors have a faulty reading, it could cause harsh shifts, slipping, long shifts and short shifts. If driven with these issues for a period of time could lead to premature transmission failure.

@@markgarcia733 the VSS is the vehicle speed sensor. This sensor is mounted on the tailhousing of the transmission. It sends a signal to the ECM to show vehicle speed. The ECM then sends the signal to the instrument cluster to operate the speedometer.
