How do I make sure the clock spring doesent turn or "break"? When I loosen the center bolt am I supposed to somehow hold it? Please explain, thank you!

So first things first, I was scared to death messing up my daily driver if I did something wrong with the install (see all the other reviews below and on the attached KZbin video; with issues with the clock spring.) However, I had NO problem whatsoever and it took me 90 minutes to complete, probably could have done it faster, but I had the YOUTBE video right in front of me on my IPad when I did the install this morning and rewound it numerous times. The ONLY thing the video did NOT mention was that for the 3/4" socket and wrench to take off the main nut, BRING an extension. The socket and wrench will NOT have enough room to take off the main steering wheel nut alone, it's about 4 inches deep. The only thing I did different was use a rubber mallet to convince the old steering wheel to come off. It did not take much, but there was NO way simply "tapping" both sides was going to be enough to take a 5 year old steering wheel off. As far as the clock spring, make sure your ride has wheels forward/straight before you disconnect the battery and start the install. The airbag comes off easily and sits right in front of you, just like the video. Take off the wires and set it aside. The steering wheel itself, pry it off and pull straight back to your chest after you put the airbag wires thru it, it will NOT crack the clock spring or anything like that. Apparently the clock spring for some of the other prior installs moved more that 180 degrees or something like that and messed it up or cracked it etc; costing over $650 to replace from Toyota. Put everything back like the video showed, in that order, connected the battery and went thru the motions of resetting the "voice recognition" on the 4Runner. That was it. I hope this helped, good luck with your install and YES I was on the fence about spending that much coin on this steering wheel, but did get it on this Labor Day Weekend sale by the way; and totally do not regret it. Again I did not have any problems, bring an extension and make sure your tires are forward with no chance of moving, and you should be golden. Lastly, I am not a mechanic by any means but do know my way around hand tools.

just put this steering wheel on my 2012 Trail Edition without issues. had read a few of the posts here about the clock spring and to avoid damage, the step when you physically pull the steering wheel toward you and fish the airbag wires through is where you want to go slow and i put some painters tape to hold the clock spring and prevent it from moving or turning. a little bit left and right is fine, this is what the spring is designed to do but you just don't want to rotate 360* one direction or the other because that's when all the issue come up and you risk breaking the internals of the spring.

Great vid! But where did you get the black steering wheel volume button? Is that a mod? Is it the stock nightshade? Mine is grey and it drives me nuts…wheel looks fire

So what is the issue here? I see a few comments about fault lights and the clock spring. Im about to replace my steering wheel tomorrow. So once the airbag wires are fed through the steering wheel, you just need to make sure the clock spring remains at the 12 o'clock position..?

Wouldve been really helpful for you to let us know that you shouldnt let the clock spring turn. Now I cant get my traction light or power steering light to turn off. Any tips on a solution?

Any tips on breaking the wheel free after removing center nut? I’m hitting it hard enough from behind I’m worried I’m gonna damage the steering column and it won’t budge

I followed this video exactly step by step and changed my steering wheel, but post installing, the traction light and the power steering light comes on. Heard this is a common problem during steering replacements but would’ve been nice to know ahead of time. Now I’m stuck with the lights on.

@@kermitus18 unfortunately been super busy, I do have an appointment with my mechanic in a few days. Because everything seems to be working fine, I’ve been driving with the lights on. Traction seems to be working fine so does the power steering. So I’m sure it’s the power steering position or the sensor that’s off. If you get it checked in the next couple days, do let me know what works out here. Would be greatly appreciated

@@asjidhussain991 it’s the clock spring. When you take the steering wheel off you CANNOT LET THE CLOCK SPRING ROTATE. There’s another video with someone taping it down and now it’s a $1300 fix.
