Hard drive bearings can go bad, increasing the power needed to spin them up. That issue will show up as slow starts, clicking (the click is not from the motor), and then potentially destroyed components related to the motor power circuit. You can use Windows Disk Management (or Disk Utility on Macs) to look at the partitions on the drive. If the map comes up the drive is electrically good. There may still be data loss due to damage to the platters, but that's another story entirely. Back in the day my favorite quick trick to temporarily revive a "dead" drive was to power it up and twist it quickly. This would have the effect of helping the motor get the platters moving when the bearing was introducing too much friction. Once it spun up, the friction is far less and the motor would continue working until shutdown. Which is all that was needed to rescue data from the drive.

My external Seagate 3TB HD Drive that worked for years has been working fine until today a few hours ago when it suddenly couldn’t be detected anymore and it got worried. PC still works but if the non-detected HD Drive is still plugged in my PC cannot boot up. I don’t hear any spinning from it though it does hum when you plug it back in at first. This video is impressive and gives me hope I can fix my HDD and backup my data. I haven’t backed up in 3 months and I did add some new data a few days ago on my HD. I don’t have the tools like you do, but I really hope I get it back to normal.

This is mostly caused by using wrong power adapter, like 19-20 V instead of the 12V that came with the HDD external enclosure. The TVS protection diode gets shorted and shorts the 12V power input to ground to protect the HDD circuits.

Stupid question but what would’ve made the zero ohm resistors go bad that you could just replace them without further diagnosis? Or was it that diode that caused it?
@OnStageLighting2 жыл бұрын
Overvoltage caused the diode to fail short (it's job) which turned the 0R into fuses, protecting the rest of the board.

@caramba102 жыл бұрын
He said it's for protection and not needed just to recover the data which is what I suspect the customer wants and will replace this with a new one for peace of mind.
@tekmusti2 жыл бұрын
@@caramba10 if it was a capacitor and parelel plugged,you dont need to put another capacitor. But it is a diode that you have to put another one.otherwise the device wont work.because the diode is not located as paralel. Or maybe the diode used for opposite voltage issue. probably he changed the diode but forgot the recording
@BertoldVdb2 жыл бұрын
The diode here is used as over-voltage and reverse polarity protection. In case of sustained over-voltage, it sacrifices itself to ensure the zero ohm resistors burn out and save the rest of the circuit. Normally it is a special type of diode: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transient-voltage-suppression_diode It depends on the circuit if you can remove the diode or need to put it back.

Hello Alex, thank you for the quick fix video. How did you know the diode is used for protection? Unless you have seen the schematics, I wish to know if there are other components nearby indicate that it is a protection diode (for example because the diode is near the connector?).
@OnStageLighting2 жыл бұрын
Firstly, experience. But before that, you can find out what kind of diode it is by looking up the datasheet (TVS is usually used for over voltage protection). You can also reverse engineer that part of the circuit to see what a component is doing. In the case of over voltage protection, a diode will be between a power rail and ground with the cathode connected to the rail. It's common for circuit boards to be laid out somewhat intuitively, and the protection component may be near the origin of the supply coming to that part of the circuit or the board, but could also be near the component it is designed to protect too.

Since you are doing data recovery very often, i can recommend you UFS Explorer as it supports all formats (NTFS, ext4, ...) and even RAID reconstruction. The software is pretty expensive, but you can test the free version. For checking if a drive is actually recognized, the free version is good enough. The software works on windows linux and mac.
