They look very promising. I wonder how long it will take to reach to EU resellers. Nevertheless let's hope they will not lower the quality after the initial reviews as other producers did in the past (i.e. ADATA, Silicon Power).

Good review! Nice to see Transcend drives run so well. I do wonder how you test your nvme drives. I use 990 Pro and 980 Pro`s and mine are much faster, your sequential numbers (and others) seem like the drives are running through the chipset link connected m.2 slot. My 990 Pro 1TB does 7462MB/s but it`s on the CPU pcie 4.0 lanes. Yet your 990 Pro 2TB does 6810MB/s, that is quite the difference and the 2TB one should be the faster drive. My two 980 Pro 2TB numbers seem more like the numbers in your graph, but those are connected through the chipset link on my system. The chipset link really caps max performance on pcie 4.0 drives when using x570 or z590.
@TechTesters
@TechTesters Жыл бұрын
They're always connected directly to the CPU lanes. Maybe you're comparing your peak speeds to my average speeds, or using a smaller amount of data.
@alexbinder

Realy like these SSD reviews, what would like to see is also a comparison of the advertised endurance of the drives to highlight if there are big differences.
@TechTesters
@TechTesters Жыл бұрын
Thanks! But testing actual endurance would take ages of non-stop testing, plus you'd need a large number to say anything useful about reliability. It's just not viable :)
@littlebill1987
@littlebill1987 Жыл бұрын
Also some youtubers did endurance testing a few years ago and most SSDs hit there advertised limit and then some. Short of some issue like Samsung, endurance isn't a issue under normal desktop use.

@@TechTesters You measured about 6.2 GB/s of sequential write speed, that gives 6.2GB/s * 3600 secs/hour * 24 hours/day = 535680 GB/day = 535.68 TB/day Assuming a 4TB TLC drive has a life span of 2400TBW, you'd reach this amount in 2400TB / 535.68 TB/day = 4.48 days = 107.53 hours. If I had your channel and your assets, I'd definitely make a video out of this, "Can an SSD be cheap, fast, AND reliable at the same time?". You'll need to put some nice heatsink on the SSD, and you'll need to set up some scripts that'll do writing on the drive and deletion once it gets full. Even if the script doesnt utilize the drive's full write speed, it's not like it'll take that much longer than 4 days. I'm giving out money in the shape of ideas here :)

@@AndyU96 It's still a problem of the number of drivers available and the cost of them, 1 or 2 or even 3 drives are nowhere near as good of a sample size to tell anything about else related to their durability/quality or specific issues which might be occurring under their corresponding scenarios and that's IF they do. As the lady said, it's just not viable, financially at least.

If you take into account that 25% of an ssd's capacity should be always kept empty to preserve performance and life while future windows will be 50GB or more, games are already 50-100 times larger than what they used to be, ...and that 4TB of space isn't really that much of an overkill.

Thanks for including a SATA EVO 870 drive in your testing, ....it provides a better overall perspective on the results. It looks like the Transcend drive is a great and very competitively priced product. I only wonder if cache sizes are similar, ...1GB per Terabyte of storage is the norm. Most likely that is the case but I would check before buying.

I think they are a little shy of releasing in the US at the moment. Some crazy nvme deals happening recently! I was able to pick up a 4TB Crucial P3 Plus (DRAM-less) for $250 which will work great as a secondary drive to my recently acquired Crucial P5 Plus I got for $130. Very aggressive pricing at the moment.
@SirReptitious
@SirReptitious Жыл бұрын
Damn, those sound like crazy good prices. I haven't bought an SSD in years. I have 3 2TB SATA drives, 2 Micron 1100s and 1 Crucial MX500. IIRC I paid $210, $250, and $280 for them(I only bought each of them when they were on sale). I'm still running a pre-NVMe system so it's just SATA. But I am perfectly happy with SATA3 speeds. I still have several HDDs in my system too. HDD speeds can be annoying of course. SATA SSDs solved that problem. While NVMe are factually faster, they wouldn't improve my "quality of life" enough to warrant wasting money trying to get the fastest drive made. Of course when the time comes to build a new system it will have at least one NVMe drive, but it won't make me dump SATA SSDs or HDDs.
@-opus

@@SirReptitious I built a new pc last year and was surprised to find nvme prices very comparable to sata ssds, even though they are much faster. I am using a nvme for my boot drive, but re-using 2 sata ssd's for desktop and for gaming. As you mentioned the gains are not worth buying new drives when existing ones still work.

Just so any that are looking in the UK know. Yes I've tried the mess also known as Amazon, and I have gone through the official links on the Transcend website. I have also done a search through a number of search engines and PCPartPicker. EBay only has orders from Germany and that means HMRC taxing the item which the purchaser will need to pay to receive the goods. (anything over £39 in value).

Hi also from the Netherlands.. i just bought a bunch of FireCude 530 2TB 6 for my workstation and 2 520 for my laptops that don't need pci 4. comparing Transcend MTE250H 4TB with the 4TB Seagate FireCuda on tweakers pricewatch i see i made a good choice the TBW (Total Bytes Written ) is 5.1 PB vs 3.12PB of the Transcend.. But when comparing the 2TB version the Transcend seems to be a tad better in the TBW and Mean Time Between Failures department. Having said that i can't argue with the €147 price difference per disk when buying from the same store informatique. Ahh well i already bought all my hardware.. besides i can't find a transcend 2tb without heatsink.. and removing the heatsink of your SSD would definitely nullify your warranty ..the 4TB has one without heatsink. Good vid ... btw i checked the TBW on the manufacture site and the 2TB Transcend is 1560TBW while the FireCude is 2550TBW... Just to make myself feel better with my purchases.

I'm not sure I'd trust an SSD with the data (documents, photos, video, audio) which I've stored on Hard Drives for well over 20 years! Some of the video is from Betamax, and is almost 40 years old! ... An unpowered Hard Drive will safely store data for a LONG time! Just as decades old magnetic tapes store audio. My 40 year old Betamax videotapes (featuring many long-since dead family members) still play perfectly! My Amazon Stupid Speaker told me that an unpowered flash drive will start to lose data in a few days! ... That's why I call her "Stupid!" ... Even though she's talking crap, I'm still not sure I'd trust an SSD? Incidentally, I'm not anti-SSD! I've used SSD's for my system drive for several years! But my irreplaceable data is precious (I have multiple copies, one of which is a tiny SanDisk metal flash drive, which I carry everywhere in my wallet!) EDIT: I have the tiniest flash drive I've ever seen! It's a Transcend 4GB, and it's made of black plastic, and it's virtually flat! It's SMALLER than the USB socket! I've had it for years, and it still works perfectly! I have other Transcend flash drives, and I really like them. They're affordable and bullet proof.

This m2 ssd 4tb card is terrible! I stored 2.05tb of game storage in the card. It’s 50% full but the games run on this card begins to lag so much to the point it’s no longer playable! Gameplay and cutscenes become super slow and choppy that it crashes many times! The PS5 auto shutdown and send me error messages when I reboot it! When the games begin to lag. It takes 2-3 minutes to become normal and then it repeats itself 30-40 minutes after! That’s how I finished playing though lagging game!

Yes. It is a piece of aluminium. But why on earth would you want to remove it?!

I grabbed a LEVEN JP600 4TB PCIe 3D NAND NVMe Gen3x4 for 179 (reg $199) as a storage / gaming drive. I only use gen 4 for boot

Just brought the 250 s 4tb for £280. Checked against all my other 4 drives samsung 980 gen 4 drives. In the real world no difference, but they are two 1tb, two 2tb. So 4 tb transcend at Samsung 980 spec today is a good spend. Used a samsung 990 as an external usb 4 +4 theoretical 2.2 GB /sec obviously no diff to 980 or transcend. Hammered it for a while, and no problems.

Transcend 4TB SSDs consistently and significantly trailing 1TB and 2TB SSDs in synthetic and real-world tests. Not that I'll notice, but just to be complete.

crazy how well the sn770 holds up on most of these benchmarks without DRAM

It does benefit a lot from the high-end (i9/ddr5) test bench, do keep that in mind.

@@TechTesters I wonder what would happen if that same test bench was loaded up with a memory intensive workload (either a memory intensive game or prime 95 large ffts) while the same benchmarks are running on a dram-less ssd. Would the performance tank in such a case while the dram equipped ssds lose less performance? Although it would be hard to find a memory intensive workload that leaves the cpu cores free enough to carry out the benchmark run.

Can’t get the 4tb in the states. The 1 and 2Tb are competing with better quality drive like WD and Seagate in pricing but not undercutting them by anything measurable.

It's in the older roundup video, and in an upcoming new one as well. But I cut some drives out of the graphs to keep them legible. The FC530 was fine, but didn't really stand out next to (for example) the KC3000 / SN850X that Blue mentioned.

I bought an 980, 20 days ago, 500 Gb, 3 warranty years, 30 euros. But altough Was not the capacity was looking for, its a nvmn for video composition. I guess for now it will serve me. I believe in the next year we can by a 3 tb for the same price.
