Bloody heck - some memories there. Thanks for posting. Not sure if I would have been there or stuck back in Detmold. Great to see and hear the so familiar wagon. Ahhh. no vent tube, followed by cuff on the head :)/ Pube.

I'm ex-17/21L & we were on hohne ('83 I think) & were given a bridge crossing demo (on flat ground) by , as a happens, a friend of mine, driving his wagon (chieftain). After us all being told expressly never to go over the bridge in anything more than 3 gear, we were all counting the gear changes as he hit it , in 6th gear going flat-out & 'Whumped' the bridge hard, we heard & felt the purcussion of this even though we were half a mile away. We all cheered as he crossed doing about 30 -35 mph.

14 years earlier than '83, I was supervising a 'pontoon bridge' crossing in Germany. The RE's asked me to instruct the drivers of the Chieftains not to change gear whilst crossing. All was well until a Centurian bridge layer arrived. I shouted at the driver, who was wearing headphones, not to change gear whilst crossing and he nodded at me as if he understood. Just after this 'beast' drove onto the 'bridge' the driver double de-clutched and changed up a gear causing the pontoon bridge to dip and surge pulling the large stakes to pull out of the river bank. The C.O. of the regiment went pear-shaped but later calmed down and we had the usual 'exercise' breakfast of compo rations which included curry powder etc. Them were the days.

We were actually based in Detmold having replaced the QOH there in 1983. Channel 4 did the filming of this documentary as part of the Soldier series in 1984.

Did my EPC (A) with Cowboy in Detmold. His solution to everything, much to the pain of the Instructor, was: Take him Round The Back of The Tank and Put 'im fully in the picture! Fantastic bloke and a great Regiment. Anybody know where he is now?

@bramman99 Yeah, it was A Sqn Dozer (1c). was my wagon until I went on an ERE to Bovy in June 1984. Spiv is the loader and owner of the phantom hand that is dishing out the brews and sarnies.

The basic point: carry forward firepower under protection. The change now is light infantry weapons will kill you at good range, hence much more observing prior advance and diligent advance under cover while exploiting terrain. Watching tanks advance on infantry across an open field with no smoke I find disturbing.

That's the book, but the part i was referring to was when the engineers briefed some tankies from the 14th/20th (of which my school CCF CSM was one, mentioned in the books many times; David Lee, a Corporal at the time) and explained to go across the bridge at a slow pace and that the first tank stormed across and then the 2nd one tried to outdo the first etc, etc. So incredibly funny. I'm hoping to land Armoured Corps if and when I can get to and through RMAS; best ethos in the British Army
