So glad I found this. Much cheaper than Safety-cap and covers a larger portion. I started using Woolwax on my 4runner, but too little too late. I see this kit in my future. Fortunately, this really isn't that hard to do all you need is a grinder, a mig welder and some time....Its just metal folks.

Absolutely outstanding. I'm trying to find someone here in Montana to do the work. I have a 4.7L DOC V8 2005 4Runner with similar issues in a few places. But she's not beyond saving.

is there no concern of water getting trapped between the two elements? did you prime the inside o the replacement piece?

Yes we recommend zinc based weld through primer.

How do you take care of problem with water staying between sheets of metal on bottom of the frame? It would be better to cut out old metal and leave only 1/2 inch for overlay (not sure if it's called like that in english), or at least old bottom should be removed. With proper spray gun it's possible to protect the frame internally with epoxy based primer. With current approach there is no way to put any paint in the gap between two sheets of metal. Alternatively you could use SS and braze it with tig/mig and old metal could rust with no problem for new metal sheets

This method, just like safe-t-cap is a bandaid, I actually cut out or off all the bad metal and replace it with good metal. If you cover it, you are leaving a place for water to enter and rust again. And you won't see it until it's too late.

This looks like a great option to possibly restore the integrity of the rusted 4Runner frames. Does the kit come with written "how to" instructions? Did you use any other rust removal tools than needle scaler, grinder and wire brush (I couldn't quite tell as that part of the video was sped up?) I couldn't tell from video how you bolted the kit parts to the frame. Approximately how much time is involved in the welding portion of installation (considering this will be our first time....assume the second side will go a bit quicker?) thanks in advance...SM

Hello, yes most of our kits come with some written instructions but the videos are probably better for instructional purposes. I typically have a 90 and straight die grinder as well with a burr bit. On the driver side there are existing threaded holes we used for the bolting just to hold it in place while we lined them up. Time depends on condition, experience, etc... 4-8 hours Id say. It can take a while.

This is why I don’t drive my 4Runner in the winter. The RAV4 does winter duty. It’s completely covered in plastic underneath and still looks new after 5 winters.

Any advice for minimizing warping of the frame, or is it not too much of a concern?

Typically not a massive concern as long as your not cutting out large sections. If there is concern I'd take some measurement before so you can make sure it is square when welding in the new pieces.

Does the welding cause weakness in the original frame? Is the original frame mild steel, or hardened?

The welding, done correctly (without undercut, burn through, etc) should not cause any weaknesses. Typically frames are made with easily welded steel if you look around your frame you will see a lot of welding. Now once you get to larger heavy duty truck frames you would start getting into higher grades of steel however those can still be welded but you might want a stronger wire to match the base steel strength.

Why did you not cut the rust out on the bottom. Water will get in between the metals and rust through the new patch work? Am I missing something?

Depends on the vehicle, and the amount of rust. We do recommend cutting out the extreme rot then using a rust converter and weld through primer on the rest. Unfortunately in a lot of Toyotas if you cut out all the rust you wouldn't be left with much. You have to be careful not to compromise the original frame integrity or it will start moving on you before you get the repairs in place.

I'm curious about how much such a job costs. I saw your kit is 99 bucks but I'm guessing getting someone to do the welding is the much more costly portion of the repair. My 4runner is likely going to need this and I'd love for it to be salvageable.

1st challenge is finding someone willing and capable, a lot of shops won't do rust repair. Labor prices then can range from 1000-2500 for a repair like this.

Wouldn't you want to cut out the rust? Metal on metal will create rust in between and will be worse.

@110welding we do cut out the worst but want to overlap to get to good metal sometimes quite a bit. I don't think we show it in this video which is our fault but we highly recommen using SEM zinc based weld thru primer we then coat the frame and inside of the new panels when installing.
