I'm about to change my pump this week and I'm having a trap door cut in also, it makes no sense to drop the Axle and spend 4 hours or more to do this. I like your video!!!

Check the voltage drop from the neg battery terminal to the frame. Also make sure the pump ground is clean. I burned out a bunch of those in tank gm pumps like that on my truck before I noticed the ground from the block to the frame was bad. Replaced all the ground straps if they look bad.

I'm the 15,000th view and glad I found this! I have a 99 SS and need to change the fuel pump too. I originally didn't want to cut a trap door, but the ease that you did that makes me want to now. I've tried removing the exhaust and dropping the axle, but it's proving to be a huge pain too. Would be nice to just cut a trap door 1 time and forever have access to the fuel pump. I know this is late but I replaced mine in my 97 Camaro about 3 or 4 years ago with a Carter fuel pump assembly. It's the OEM version. I found it on eBay and it was still new. My fuel pressure at WOT is 40PSI so I'm fixing to swap it out for the racetronix with the wire harness because I just installed my nitrous system and don't want to chance dropping fuel pressure. I have a fuel pressure safety switch wired into the nitrous system but rather be safe than sorry. Good luck in the future with it.

I don't understand the haters either, its easier to change out the pump in case it goes again, what you are cutting is not a structural piece of the car, and the bright side if youre on the road when it goes, probably change it out right there, don't have to get a tow, remove the exhaust and such. And when my pump goes, this is what im doing, if I don't make the hole before it happens anyway.

I wouldn't hesitate to cut the trap door; I cut a 2" hole in My trans tunnel to facilitate clutch bleeding. Make life as easy as possible, that's what its all about!!

That's an interesting idea. I struggled with that last summer and it ended up stripping a lot of tunnel paint. Maybe I'll go with a cut out.

I have to do my fuel pump too on my 95 Z28 😑😑😑 I had to do the same thing on my 03 mustang gt. Mustang was pretty easy tho. Just had to drop the tank but it's only held up by a few bolts😂

I just ordered a complete ac delco pump from rock auto . The pump that’s in there is only four months old so frustrated. Had a mechanic put it in charged me 1,048.00 and it didn’t last so I’m thinking trap door time!

Thanks for the video. About to change the pump and assembly in my ‘98 Z28. My problem is that sometimes the car just won’t start. I cycle the ignition on/off/on/off and eventually it starts. Killed one battery already doing this. Also it looses power during acceleration at times and the OBDI scanner shows misfires in the #1 cylinder, seems really random like the starting problem. Already changed the fuel filter and ran a couple bottles of injector cleaner through. No dice, still has the same problems. Just received my Delphi replacement assembly today. Hopefully this will fix both the starting problem and the acceleration drop / misfire. Fingers crossed. Thanks again for the vid.

Hey Jim, I'm getting ready to tackle this job myself, is there any input you can offer outside of this video? Also do you see any reason why I could not cut the hole a little bit bigger than what you did on yours? Mine literally died in my driveway luckily. I have a crank no start ,I'm pretty sure this is what the problem is, when i turn the ignition I do not hear the pump prime. Do you think it could also be the ignition control module?

Racetronix w/ Hotwire kit. That Hotwire kit is a must for our cars. GM gave us shitty, tiny gauge wire that can't adequately carry the right amount of voltage to the pump.

jimmy21480 I used the same pump in a LS1 swap I did in a '86 Trans Am. It never went out before I sold it. Same pump in a '88 TPI Formula 4 years ago it still hasn't gone out. And i used the same pump in my '97 Z28 4 years ago and it still hasn't gone out.

Something else is wrong. A fuel pump doesn’t burn out that quick, not even the cheapest brand. A cheap beand usually last a few 4,5 years.

Did you ever replace the fuel line? I’m putting in a gas tank and it’s slightly larger than the OEM I believe, anyways it kinked my supply and return lines and the car will only idle. No problem it’s what a 2 foot piece of fuel line with a quick connector right? WRONG: they don’t make a replacement part, only repair kits and wtf wants that? 15 Million F-body’s bud you can’t get a 2 foot fuel line. Awesome.

funny you should mention this. i did kink the line but a buddy of mine sent me one from a junk car. I did have to use a splice kit like you mentioned on of them a few months later. one of these days i'll go full with braided steel lines

That’s what I wanted to do, then I wouldn’t have to worry about linking them again, but nooooo you can’t use braided lines with the high pressures needed for fuel injected cars. Taking in the kinked ones to a friend who owns a shop and he’s gonna make me new lines. The junk yard was my next option I don’t want to use spliced lines

If your under the car the wire connector is behind the back seat. You'll see it if you get under there

As long as you have no leaks it won't catch fire, but have an extinguisher handy just in case.

I bought my firebird used so I have no idea if the person before me changed it as often as I do However, when I spoke to the auto shop I take it to? I told them I change it every 3k they said that is a good thing to do, So I guess since I do it myself and the filters are inexpensive enough I will just keep doing it.
