There’s nobody in history better equipped than Bruce Springsteen to write a song about the Jersey Shore and turn it into something this incomprehensibly magnificent.

I write from Yorkshire, England. The almost mystic quality Springsteen describes New Jersey so romantically and full of nostalgia. I could write about Blackpool or Whitby but somehow it wouldn't be the same, one thing they have in common is Madam Marie !

David ,I never envied a man in my life but to an English guy that sounds like a romantic adventure. Not saying I didn't have my day in sun, but it doesn't ring as true in Yorkshire as in New Jersey. Keep those sweet memories brother, God knows time can steal them away. Kind regards Martin.

The odd thing for me is that I grew up in the southern tier of NY, and only set foot in this area when I was very young -I do recall the 1964 World’s Fair. But this song sends me back to that time and place in the most vivid way possible. Towns in the 60s and early 70s had a sense of place that is largely missing now, in the face of corporate chains and strip malls.

I saw him perform this in about ‘73 at Riverfront in Cincinnati, OH! It is one of my most memorable concert moments of my life! What a performance that night, he sat in a girl’s lap in the audience & sang the song to her, it was fabulous! I think the girl had an orgasm! We were in the 4th roll that night. I’ve been to a lot of concerts in my 67 years & Bruce was one of the best! Go watch his film, it’s really good!

This is an amazing video for a couple reasons. For one, I assume he has zero money at this point, and he puts together a MONSTER band, that plays together as good as any, and they are this scruffy bunch of guys from the shore. Listen how perfect they play and how produced this song is. It is sooooo arranged like something from a big movie, yet it is some scruffy bunch of young dudes. Incredible.

Well! Today is Sunday August 14, 2022, and after watching this show in its entirety hundreds of times over the years, and an equal number of times just to watch single numbers, I've decided, surprisingly, that this is the best performance of Bruce and the band from this show. /// The slower pace on this number really, really brought the beach life to the fore, and allowed the audience, most of whom most likely had never heard Bruce sing live before and had to hear THAT through their British ears a chance to listen, hear and process the words. The band was superb here, with call outs to Roy on a shimmering piano, Steve with that groovy lead guitar and Clarence for holding it all up with his strong, subdued sax work. As always, Mark Brickman's lighting was exemplary and complimentary...just a fantastic piece of art here....an explosion of creativity and belief in oneself. Beautiful stuff.

I've got to agree. I melt every single time and listening to you interpret how the audience would have taken it all in is revelatory, so thank you for shining the light on that aspect of this one of a kind performance. A performance we'll never get enough of.

When I listened to this I had no cares and no problems but I stopped listening to him and forgot how that felt with all these new things thrown at me. But through it all I still long for the board walk at sunset some days.
