This does take some practice to avoid the instinctive reaction to grab the clutch. The key-start technique, either going backwards or forwards takes some getting used to, especially when very steep as the initial start tends to lurch the vehicle backwards/forwards before the engine compression catches it and slows. Everyone needs to learn this technique; it really is a potential lifesaver, not just on steep hills, but even on short rocky climbs/hops.

Well done, but 98% correct. Keep the handbrake on while changing into reverse, as for that one minute you were relying only on the foot brake only. Hand brake on until after it’s in reverse so you always have two points of protection. And always keep one hand on the steering wheel, so if you role at least you can control which way you go.

Hi Tim, I am an educator in the RFS and we teach a practice similar in our fire appliance as part of our off road driving course, both in heavy vehicles and light vehicles. Interestingly, we have had damage caused to the reverse gear being stripped under load in Toyota Hilux's when starting in reverse. Noted, that this is the only type of vehicle that has been problematic when practicing the hill stall recovery and we don't use them to practice this recovery technique anymore due to the risk of reverse gear damage. Haven't had this issue with any of our other types of 4wds over the past 10yrs...yet!

G'day mate, Thanks a lot for your reply. Thats interesting about the issues you have found only with the Toyota Hilux gear box. I haven't heard that before. Would the Hilux model you refer to be one of the newer models? Thanks again for your reply, interesting feedbcak. Cheers Tim.

@@timbates4wdadventures We had 2 damaged, both around the 2009~10 vintage and manuals, so not the newer versions. We are slowly moving our fleet to automatics. There are a number of reasons to go to automatic, one being that we need to cater for all types of drivers and the new generation of drivers we are training don't often know how to drive a manual vehicle as they haven't had the opportunity to learn on one. So sadly in a few years, the manual will be a thing of the past for us.

Hi Tim thanks for this video, I am at the beginner level with so much to learn. I also have an auto, so any extra tips or differences are very useful when you make these videos. Example: Do I leave it in drive, or should I manually put it in a lower gear so it can’t shift when climbing? Thanks Alex
@timbates4wdadventures4 жыл бұрын
Alex Cross Gday Alex, With your auto transmission. Rather than drive up or down steep hills. You would manually lock the transmission in either 1st or 2nd gear low range. Depending how steep the track is. If you leave it in drive, it then allows the transmission to change gears on its own. Take control and lock it in a gear yourself. Hope that helps mate. I’m glad you found the video helpful. Thanks for your reply. Cheers Tim.

Hey Tim, If you need to go backwards down a hill, couldnt you just put it in neutral with car running and coast down with breaks I didnt think any engine breaking would happen in reverse and youd go too quickly backwards
@timbates4wdadventures3 жыл бұрын
G'day Matthew, No mate, rolling back in neutral while on the brakes has got danger written all over it. If your foot were to slip off the brake pedal, your 4wd will take off backwards very quickly. Not to mention if you're on the brakes too much and the brakes get to hot and begin to fad. Always have it in gear, no matter if going up hill or down. Reverse gear in low range will still provide engine braking the same as going up hill. Just feather the brakes when reversing down and let the reverse gear do most of the engine braking. I hope that helps to answer your question mate. Thanks for that. Cheers Tim.
