I use 4hi at highway speeds all the time in the winter. You can shift from 2 to 4hi at any speeds, as long as all four wheels spins at the same speed. I usually just let off the gas a bit to shift then get back on it. Recommended only when wheel slipping is possible (gravel roads, snowy or icy roads, etc)

In my '24 jl sport s, 4H works at highway speeds. Shift on the fly is fine at 75mph. 4L will go up to 35mph without over revving the engine, but does work best at 25mph or lower. The 850RE transmission will not allow shifting of gears or transfer case at unsafe speeds. The manufacturer recommends shifting into 4L while moving, between 1 and 3 mph ( always put your transmission in neutral before shifting into 4L).

Good job, Matt. The issue i've had with my '19, JLU Rubicon (2.0 Etorque) is that it can be hard to shift into 4Lo when driving up a steep incline: You have to use "N" to get the gears to mesh properly, but you also have to be moving (forward or back) a couple mile-per-hour, and that can be interesting on some, very tight shelf roads. Usually, you want to be in 4Lo before you get into that predicament, but it's not always possible if you don't know the trail. It seems strange that many vehicles that are nowhere near as capable (off-road) as Wranglers figured out how to shift into 4Lo ("fly by wire") effortlessly, but it can be an adventure with these late-model Wranglers.

I’m still a bit lost. I’m a new Jeeper, lol. What does a sway bar do? I just really want to know, how can I make my 2 door 2021 Rubicon not slide or fishtail in the snow?Normally I use 4H in the rain or snow. Can I start it in 4H or do I have to shift up from 4L or 2H? I mean, I usually start it in 4H and sometimes it gets too grabby on the road if I’m trying to turn or just start out. Is that because I’m supposed to start in a different gear? Should I start in 2H and shift in 4H once the car starts rolling? What if I’m in extreme snow? What is the best I can do? 4L and 15 mph? I just want to make it through winter. I’m trying to be a mountain woman but it’s harder than I thought it would be, lol. I bought some chains and I’m guessing that’s definitely a 4L thing (not there yet). Thank God there is less snow this year than last year! Gotta get this down before I get snowed in. Please advise. 😅

I’m pretty sure that orange pull is actually for the transmission neutral and is BAD to flat tow with. The transfercase is mechanically locked into gear and needs that shifter into the neutral position to disengage it from the transmission. Flat towing in transmission neutral and transfercase 2h will cause the transmission to rotate without full lubrication. That Orange pull should be just to disengage the parking gear so that a tow truck can move the vehicle.
@DIRTROADCRED2 жыл бұрын
You are correct the orange is the transmission, sometimes when giving as many detailed specs in one video it might get rearranged in my head briefly!

Hilarious! And here I thought the Willys Sport was just a way to get that Rubicon “look” at a cheap price. Who knew it actually was a better vehicle for a Senior Citizen who just wanted to be the cool grandfather taking his grandkids camping. I also find that the Red Rubicon Shocks stiffen the side to side lean that the Sport has but since it still has Sport springs it soaks up road bumps better than a Rubicon. The Willys package and its more pleasant price point might be a great video as I surmise most folks use their Jeeps like me and would actually be happier not getting a Rubicon is it was explained to them vs. it being presented as driving a “less capable” Jeep. Capable really use situational!

Question? Like your dad I have a 6sp Willys Sport with the Limited Slip Differential so while it doesn’t have lockers in actuality when driving in 2WD or even 4WD High on rural roads wouldn’t that mean it’s a tad more capable than a Rubicon which has open front & rear differentials unless locked? P.S. I bought the Willys to save money; but since 99% of the time I’ll just be using it on rural roads to deal with snow and muddy Fire Service ones it might actually be better than a Rubicon in that narrow band of usage. Who knew?

I always wondered what the Off-road+ did. I’d really love to see a video about tire sizes with factory wheels. I’d like to go with 315/70-17 on my ‘22 factory Rubicon rims. What issues will I face attempting this? I’m never going to be doing serious off roading with it.
@solarmaple2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike! You'd need to recalibrate your speedometer, and if it is a Rubicon, you shouldn't loose much power with the current gear ratio it has. It will give you less room on the wheel well, and there could be some rubbing on extreme turn angles. But I could be wrong on that last one since Rubicons come with a factory mini lift, it'd depend on the offset on your rims too. And lastly, I don't pretend to be a smart mouth or be disrispectful. But if you're never gonna do serious off-roading on a Rubicon trim, you could've saved some 20k$ and gotten a Willys. But it's definitely always nice to have the lockers and sway bar disconnect available. :)
@mikegriffin12 жыл бұрын
@@solarmaple I contemplated for a couple weeks between the Willys and Rubicon. Comparing the two with all the safety packages, towing, cold weather, and 8.4” tech, the difference was only $2500. Considering the sway bar disconnect and lockers is what made me go with the Rubicon. I’m sure some day in the future I will do some more serious off roading. For now I’m just enjoying the newness and open air with the top off. I had an ‘87 Wrangler Laredo 30 years and loved it but, it was a dog on the interstate and the heater was pathetic in the New England weather.
@DIRTROADCRED2 жыл бұрын

For a 392 should you use off road plus in 4H Auto or 4H part time when on sand?
@DIRTROADCRED2 жыл бұрын

Aloha and good 🌟 evening 🌙 Matt. This is a very thorough and detailed explanation on the gears for the Jeep JT and Jeep JL models. This gives me a complete understanding for the uses of the gears from 2H to 4L and 4H Part Time. Great video 📼 Matt.🤜🤛📼🐶🐕🎓💪👀🤲👐🌟🔅🔍👍😎🤠😇💰🤓🏡🙌⛅🤙

I really appreciate the explanations on the features. I have a question. We have a 2023 Rubicon JLU. I was wondering are the differentials completely open until locked or is there some sort of limited slip? The reason I ask. My pick up is a completely open diff and on our steep gravel driveway it struggles to get to the top because it’s a one wheel peel. The Rubicon on the other hand while completely in 2 Wheel Dr. makes it up no problem and you can even see two tracks where the gravels are sort of kicked up.

Great question, they are completely unlocked unless you lock them!

As with all your content, I watch this when you published it, but had a JLU only. Just grabbed a new Willys, so it was great watching it again with purpose. As always, great content. 🔥🫡
