The 4x SUIT or Trilux optic has long been a fore-runner in developing small arms accessories. As an optic rolled out in 1975, the ruggedized prism optic was certainly one of the earliest viable combat optics to be used on a main line rifle.
So how was its effectiveness in the field? Does it really work? Or does it drag down the effectiveness of the L1A1 SLR?
Join us as we discuss shoot the rifle and discuss its performance with Mike ‪@BlokeontheRange‬ !

yep my rifles gas regulator was set at 5 and then had jamming issues, which the instructor said to turn up the regulator to 7 or 8, ( which goes all the way up to 11 ) but still jammed, so had to cycle each round as i was shooting, which i believe that was the only problem with my weapon system when i shot it while in the cadets?
@7071t6
@7071t6 Жыл бұрын
Also i broke the record to dismantle the SLR / L1A1 which i think was 48 seconds and then put it back together in less than 60 seconds, the most important was the gas regulator and making sure the spring does not go flying out of the chanbmer, but other than that, very good for what it was but the au militray did not like it because of the jamming issues, no matter what the gas regulator was set up at from 1 to 11 ?

Great weapon system. The first time I ever saw this site was my first tour of NI. I was given one on my second day in Armagh with a half hours instruction and no range time. I was told by my platoon commander if we got into a firefight to take it off and use the iron sights.

Also, you can see that he has to adjust laterally after each shot which would indicate that the rifle is not pointing naturally at the target (one of the marksmanship principles).

It’s a standard issue military rifle, they aren’t designed to be fired one at a time, section fire is key. Although it’s very strange coming from a British rifle, being that the British army has always had very high marksmanship standards

My father served in the UDR during the troubles in Northern Ireland. He loved the SLR but wasn't a fan of the suit. Used the UK SLR a lot in my time . I had a SUIT sight installed on my SLR . YES you must do extensive testing because point of aim point of impact does go wonky . You have to understand this for long term engagement at distance with lots of rounds going down range . The SUIT was most developed for Northern Ireland [ Maybe I'm wrong ] On a patrol I had my head out a PIG with my SUIT ready and able … Absolutely ecstatic regarding your channel , reviews and shooting tests . Goes wonky? Dunno what youre talking about there. 22 Yrs 2 Para, 4 yrs NI with the SUIT sight. Won the Walker Cup (NI), shot at Bisley wth it. I wonder if these lads could get hold of a single point sight used in NI for a while. Excellent snap shooting bit of kit. Fired with both eyes open. Withdrawn cos it encouraged snap shooting rather than aimed shots which went against the Yellow card (YAWN)

I shot the L1A1 while in the cadets at Cerberus AU Navy my score was 98 out of 100 at 500 yards, not bad for a 14 year old. :) Also had the chance to shoot with the F class boys and my first time shooting their weapon systems i was totally blown away witht he systems they had, thought it would be like just hunting rifles etc, but nope totally customized weapon systems 308 and 5.56 rifles, my first score was at 1,200 yards and was 38/50 and then 2nd time round was 48/50 ,and then found out that i had cataract in my right eye as well, now just would like to try again. But again because i got taught how to shoot or should i say the basic marksmanship protocols and also the massive expensive f class weapons did most of the work as well, but sure at those distances i:e 1 KM it was a great results never ever expected those results not at those distances ,love the channel as well, keep up the great work.🙌🙌👌👌👍👍✌✌😀😀

I acquired a Trilux scope in the early 90s, put it on my L1A1 and the results were dismal. Mine did not have the Tritium unit due to import restictions but that wasn't the issue. My primary complaint was that I wore glasses and getting proper eye relief was a challenge/impossible and because the scope did not have focal adjustment meant everything through the scope was fuzzy without my glasses rendering the scope worthless. This was brought up by Bloke On The Range. It looked good on the rifle but I was much better off with the iron sights.

After a lot of experimentation & load development, I've dialled in my 1963 BSA L1A1 to shoot 10 round groups measuring on average 18" high & 10" wide at 600M (660yds). This is using a 3-9x40 scope & 20-30 seconds between shots. Definitely not the most accurate rifle around but that 18"x10" is 'minute of man' which is what it's all about. In comparison, my .270 Schultz & Larsen with the same scope will put 10 shots into a 6" circle at the same distance.

I still prefair the 7.62 51 NATO any day over 5.56, you didnt get many enemy combatants coming at you after being hit by 7.62 FMJ! like the site many good reviews thanks!

I have never seen so many stoppages with the SLR, are the mags ok? gas settings? I was never a fan of the SUIT because of the crappy way it mounts to the weapon and the parallax error at close-in ranges the SUSAT on the L85 also has the parallax issue at short ranges too.. even with open sights every time an SLR was broken open to clean there is always the risk of a shift in zero anyway, ]and that's before the wobbly rear sight on a heavily worn one, when issued with the SUIT it came with a small green nylon pouch that had a belt loop but no hooks on the back.

At 600 meters, run 100 to firing point, adopt position, watch and shoot 6 Falling plates from 500 meters, half inch armour plate 12 x 12 inches, no problems for this Gat, I loved mine..just peep and foresight,,,very very accurate in the right hands

If you mount an aftermarket rail system and an RMR redot the SLR sights are tall enough to coexis with your iron sights. A very nice dependable combination. Try it let us know what you think!!

Hi, I was a marksman on the SLR in the fifties, sixties and seventies. Served in four armies, but the best shooting I ever observed on the range was in Rotorua, New Zealand when I was attached to the 6 RNZIR. At that time we were training for fighting in the bush or jungle and after zeroing in at 200m we fired off ten rounds in the standing position at 300, 400, 500 and 600m. At the furthest range I still had two soldiers hitting the target eight out of ten shots! It turned out that they were deer cullers who worked for the Government keeping the feral deer in controllable numbers. These were Territorial Soldiers using crappy SLR’s with iron sights. Later I have watched deer cullers shooting at deer from helicopters using SLR’s when they were in business shooting and recovering red deer for the export venison market. Don’t blame the rifle, adjust your technique and survive. Cheers mate. Harera

We never removed the sight from the top cover because there was absolutely no reason to. I never saw the SUIT whilst in basic training. The first time I saw one was after joining Bn in Londonderry and they were limited to brick commanders and/or half decent shots and the rest of the brick had iron sights. Brick commanders had them in order to locate likely terrorist firing positions and aid in target indication. I managed to get one due to being an okay shot!

It makes sense to me that the sight aim bar tip is upside down on the SUIT TRILUX rifle sight. If the target ( pop up ) is popping up from the bottom, it makes sense that the aimers views of the bottom field of vision is free of obstruction, allowing free sight (eye) to find any pop up target.

My era. Joined 88 still had the SLR then converted to the SA80. The SLR was lethal with a SUIT sight. Apart from the original teething problems with the new rifle it was very accurate from the beginning with the SUSAT sight. Similar sight picture but the post comes from bottom not top. I don’t think there was the problem you found with the SUIT when I used one. Could it be the ammo?

If you want to know who made the SUIT pick up a pair of 7x42 Avimo focus free binoculars. They were trialed in the late 70s and adopted by the Falklands war. You don't tend to see them in most G10 kits as ancient mid century binos with stadia lines abound and still work. They were/are however issued to RECCE platoons and the likes of forward observers. They look just like a pair of SUITs side by side. Same finish, same style eye cups. 33:19

The SLR is prone to failure to feed because of magazine manipulation. Thats why you dont hold the magazine or redt it on objects whilst shooting! I could aldo see you were going to have a failure to extract as it was short stoking. I found stting 3 to be the most reliable! As always, your weapon handling is brilliant! No silly racking the action more than once to clear it, and safety aplied when not on target👍

I beg of you to put out a video on the later SUSAT scope! I’ve been trying to find as much information on those as possible. I own one with the standard mount and one with the commercial mount. And no I don’t have an SA80. But they do go on my Spanish CETME LV/S.

So the Queen's Cousin owned a Company what was not making anything was told that they have a Contract. So the TriLux and the loss of Israeli Interest sent people's attention to the G3 and H&K who would later save the SA80. G3 was an issue because of Getting over the Rear Drum Sight, so you went to chin weld, just like the AK. Then there was the Charging handle hitting the Objective Bell for the High Mag Optics. Beautiful ideas, and even the AR never really got it right, and the M14 definitely did not. Keeping Iron Front Sights on M4 was a branch breaker to keep branches from hitting the optics when moving forward while aiming. Useful and necessary with such flawed Mounting Systems of experience. Then everything went to sub 13" barrels and the useful attributes of the AR Ammo was gone. Now we are at BR Modern Cartridges, 13" Barrels, Suppressors, and Folding Length Adjustable Stocks (which Generation Fudd said could never produce accuracy) because of Body Armor. What the bits.
