4x4 converted van, off road and questions answered

4x4 conversion camper van, as I have promised I took the van for a weekend out camping and a little off road with a full review of the van but this is really only scratching the surface on building a 4x4 van overland or expedition vehicle or van, we had a good time with a long time friend of mine Andrew and hes wj we have built couple of years ago at the campsite and a little off road course on the owners land.

I'm not going to build such a beast, most probably. But I appreciate when someone put his soul to something and not just brag about what he bought and have just raw idea how's that built. Great video. Interesting ideas. I have a question, well I would like to see more detail on the spare tire mounting as I want to mount a storage box in the same way. Using the door hinges for the swing but independently from the doors, how is it done? To be honest I would like to see more detail on several parts! Hey it's the engine from e300td 2000 year with the om603 pump this ones are all mechanical, pump is then modified with bigger elements and external alda ( devise that rises fuel ratio when on boost). Gearbox controller is ofgear 722.6xx gearbox, box you can find it from jeep wj crd but many other std 4x4 have used it as well, you'll need the gearbox from the e300td as well for bellhausing etc as you'll need to swap it with the wj gearbox. It's actually fairly simple

Well as a std out of factory I think is one of the most robust out there, get a good engine in one, lift, tyres and you're pretty much ready to go around the world, sure not everyone loves them and doesn't always suit someone's needs as for overland vehicle but sure they're robust and drivetrain is quality

Hi, Thomas, fantastic build and a great vehicle. Could I ask if you are happy with the low down torque you are getting from the motor and Isuzu turbo combination and at what rpm does it kick in. Most of the OM606 4x4's I've seen on youtube are going fast doing high revs. Have you found your set-up suitable for slow technical 4x4 driving? I'm thinking of putting this set-up into a 300tdi 110 defender. Also, it would be great if you did a video on your trailer build, keen to see the suspension set up. Hi, thank you. The torque is pretty much immediate, with auto gearbox engine builds load later than manual transmission but pressure starts to build as soon as there is load, in off-road with the transfer case in low I nearly never use 1rst gear as almost too "reactive" so torque and responsiveness is absolutelly spot on or actually much more than needed, obviously with power band lower down on the rpms range it looses top power , with the gt3582r it was way faster and can easily outrun x5's it was a bit lagy and less suitable for slow technical driving in off-road especially with the trailer.

@@darrylthompson9431 hmmm most likely no, it really does put some torque down and you'll have to be careful with the gas pedal, that's not what you want, mate it with a good strong box and you'll love it

Thank you, quiet simple; defender doors hinges on top, vivaro/trafic rear gate struts, job done, you'll have to play with the locking mechanism a little but it's all doable.

What 4x4 van would you choose in the United States?

Well it all depends on your needs, if a small class van then probably an econoline, I actually have one in the workshop doing Bentley w12 twinturbo mid engine, have a look at my other videos its all there. If large class then a sprinter /crafter seems very popular and I'm planning to build one soon, the think is that in USA you guys have an incredible amount of options for 4x4 systems parts, axles , transfer cases etc so it's actually easier over there.

No problems with the engine at all and insurance wise I have a trade policy that includes everything so for me was no issues at all however there are specialised ins companies that will happily insure it and actually not expensive as well.

I also have build a spare tyre mount in the back with a included ladder to the roof rack. Wanna lift the chassis about two inches..have to figure out in the Front. Rear is no Problem. Well it really isn't that simple, in this video it's all roughly explained. There is no kit you can buy to make them 4x4, has to be custom build.
