My d22 navara 3L zd30 was a great bargain buy. Picked it up for $4000 at 350,000kms in 2020 and now at 440,000kms and still going strong with no issues in my ownership just usual maintenance and check’s before every trip. Never seen a d22 fully kitted out like more popular models of 4x4 and personally can’t see why not it’s a great base for a build.

@@davidharper7636 Absolute rubbish. BEAR in mind - when you own a Magna or Pajero - these have without a doubt lower resale than any brand. When you're selling cheap cars you attract cheap owners. What do cheap owners do? be cheap. Cheap/lack of maintenance and cheap non genuine parts. you'll always get more things going wrong. They are absolute rigs. Even the NP Pajero - Hell get the pump fixed and you have a RIPPER car that'll outlast humanity

The best bang for buck rig is hands down the D22 YD25 Navara. I own one from 2011 and bought it for $19k with 60000kms I have now almost doubled it. It has NEVER left me stranded in the bush and has always left me smiling from ear to ear. They are so capable off-road and are also reliable. They have a 4 cylinder turbo diesel which also make them fuel efficient. I have a fully loaded canopy, mud tyres and a lead foot and I still manage to get over 550kms on a single 75L tank. Mods are also affordable and readily available which is another reason this forbie is such a good buy. You can pick one of these rigs up with more kms for a 10-15k and they will still outperform lots of those patrols and land cruisers everyone is spending their life saving on. Just can't beat the mighty D22 Nav

Discovery 2 2003-2004 under 10k With proper maintenance is a very reliable car. Very capable off road and comfortable on road. 5 seaters had coils all round and 7 seaters has air in the rear. Both solid axel with centre diff lock. td5 are very economical but gee the v8 sounds good! Spare parts and upgrades still readily available. Bought my 2003 discovery v8 in 2013 for 9k with 155000km and have used it for work every day since. Up to 364000km still going strong. Just my opinion but I’m sure others will agree

May be different market but uk the cdl lever was an interesting subject, 02 and 03 often didn't have the gubbins but 01 did with no lever, easy enough to pop a hole in the floor and put a socket on it, pretty much go anywhere with the traction control, just top up fluids occasionally as if it doesn't leak its empty, luckily you guys don't have major rot of the chassis like we do, however for a couple ks galvanised chassis exist, plenty of remaps about for the td5 also.

Great episode, nice balance with the father and son duo 😂 Most recent purchase was a 2013 Prado 150, still has the 1kd but injectors are higher spec/ more reliable than in the 120s/ early 150s. Not the cheapest but figured it will hold its value so will get more money back on resale compared to NT/NX Pajero (was the other option I was looking at). Suits my needs perfectly as a family bus (comfortable/ spacious, but not too big), and occasional off-roader (beach runs, Pebbly Beach/ Moreton/ Fraser island camping). Came with a bullbar and planning to build it up over time for more serious adventures (touring more than hardcore stuff - Cape York, and eventually a half/ full lap). Better value buy was my previous purchase, 2011 PB Challenger. Arguably more capable in stock form (better clearance/ angles). Super select system is great, allows you to drive in 4H on paved roads, safer for families. Same platform/ reliability as NM Triton but more comfortable with coil rear end, and better equipment levels. More utilitarian to drive compared to the Prado though, hence the change. Prado 90 would definitely be the go under $10k for wagon lovers (like me), with older Challengers and Pathfinders (petrol only models) the best under $5k for those on a tight budget... 👌🏼 Stedi spotties now please. 😉

under 10k. i just bought my first 4x4, been looking for almost a year now. Got super lucky and found a 90 series prado with the v6 for $8000. Reason i chose it is because that model of prado is kind of an underdog in the off-road scene, so a lot of them were only used for family SUV duty. the one i found was a 2000 model that was probably the most looked after vehicle i have ever seen. no scratches, no rattles. the paint looks brand new, the interior was detailed regularly.. and the most insane part is i found several of them in this condition. most stock as a rock too so you can take them any direction you want. i just don't think you can beat the deals on them. mine even came with brand new all terrains to get me started on the tracks. -Insanely reliable petrol engine, often the interior and body are in near new condition. nearly always under 10k -comes from the factory with 2 fuel tanks. -very strong driveline. -decent clearance from factory -very good wheelbase and overall size for both a touring rig and a daily driver around town. - good parts availability due to sharing so many parts with other Toyota models like the hilux. what more can you ask for in an entry 4x4? you basically don't even have to mod them. i'm super excited to get out there and hit the trails for the first time.

very capable rigs. i have the 3.2 prestige model, 2.5" lift, 235/45/16's and it goes a many places. but before you go mad, id recommend you get a bash plate for the front to go under the radiator. the flimsy plastic panel does nothing if you scrape a rock or a clump of mud or sand. made one up with a sub frame on mine and i reckon it would have saved me around 8 or 9 radiators so far 😅

Nissan navara d40. My dad has had one for 8 years, NEVER LET US DOWN. One time the alternator died, still got us to Bendigo, (we were half way thru the trip) we made it to our mates house then got to the repair shop. Died at the repair shop. Rebuilt the alternator, just fine. Done every track in Anglesey a million times been to Bendigo a million times. Never failed us and never left us stranded, its the 18 year olds sitting on the limiter on the tracks giving it the bad rep.

Best bang for buck. 2020 Nissan Frontier 4x4. Nisasn in the USA is very underrated and under-bought (at least until the 2022 came out). But the Gen2 is extremely capable. And the 2020 (and the 2021) came with the new 3.8L engine that puts out 310hp (231kW) and 281 ft-lb (381N) of torque and a9-speed Jatco auto, but it's still surrounded by the original body and no electrical problems. I got it for US$23k (and less than 20k miles). I couldn't find a similar Toyota Tacoma for less than $35K. The "Toyota Tax" in the USA is real. Starting to build it out, so those lights will be timely.

The 3.2L 4M41T motor is absolutely bullet proof and makes good reliable power and the super select transfer makes easy work of sand, dirt, gravel and even wet slippery roads and if you cant get through it in super select you can drop it down to 4high or 4low. There is no way to deny it the series 1 SWB pajero is the best bang for buck out there. Picked up a 1990 model for 2k bog stock with 170k on the clock. A quick crank on the torsion bars and a set of 33's bolt straight on. Factory LSD in the back mighty astron 2.6 in the front manual gearbox in the middle and 2 doors of shorty fun. It's all the fun of a zook at a quarter of the price.

Since then I’ve bought 2 other cheap pajeros one for 500 and one for 800 just for parts like, lift kit, bullbar and other stuff. So all up I’ve spent less than $2.5k. The 2.5L yd25 navaras are criminaly underrated, they were made to compete with those notorious early hilux's but as a commonrail turbo desiel there fuel economy for a 4x4 is second to none whilst still producing similar power to the hilux's everyone raves on about. Mega reliable too.

people sleep on the D22 Navara's, tough torsion bars (free lift) factory LSD and the YD 25 is a pretty strong motor mine has dne 400,xxx km's. running on 25 psi of boost for 4 years! They sit between the 10-15k mark making them quite affordable. My navara has taken me furthar than any hilux I have been in so people stop hating on the navara's! I'll admit the ZD 30 has a few problems however those models sit at 4k sometimes.

The NP300 Navara. Bought mine for under $35,000 with less than 40,000k's on the clock (mid-range ST N-Sport). With the coil rear, a decent aftermarket suspension set-up, and 33's, there is not many places I haven't taken it. Comfortable tourer on the road as well for those longer trips such as Fraser island and the cape. Extremely well balanced 4wd and already running some Stedi gear, a set of type-x evo's would absolutely finish her off nicely!

They are a awd system and awesome especially in the rain and I've been told they are a monster in snow only problem is bit hard to get parts here, but overall if u fix the main problems they will go everywhere u want to go and they are cheaper on diesel then a Toyota or Nissan. Terracans are awesome in the bush and surprisingly capable. They are based off the 2nd gen Pajero chassis, and many suspension components etc are interchangeable with pajeros. The 2.9 diesel is a great engine and will make it to half a mil easy. A 2-3" lift and 32s will give you an offroad weapon. The only real downside is a lack of local aftermarket accessories, however that's nothing a bit of custom work can't fix. As far as value for money goes, terracans are the cream of the crop for sure.

Best bang for buck 4x4. 1st gen Rav4! No low range but lockable centre dif and rear LSD. Same driveline as the gt4 Celica. Is not fast with the 3fse, but it's a reliable small petrol that'll go 400,000k+. The best bit is though any of a series motors will match up to the gearbox so it's easy to swap in a 3sge for 200+ naturally aspirated ponies or a 3sgte for some turbo goodness. Super fun car on and off road and dirt cheap. Can still pick them up for less than 5k easily. Loved mine.

Nearly hit the nail on the head with the 90 series Prado but it’s predecessor in the 120 is the better bet. With petrol 4wds continuing to be criminally underrated the 120 1GRFE is the best combo for the under 20k if you look hard enough or even the mid 20’s to get one with low k’s and great condition. Commonly used for shopping so not flogged and those big powerful v6 motors are good for touring and towing also the motor used in the African 79’s due to there reliability.

Best bang for buck was easily my 105 GXL Cruiser. 6k for the Petrol 1FZ manual which has one of the best reliability reps of any petrol engine. 6k for Legendary Toyota reputation, easy to maintain as parts are everywhere and the chassis is simple, all the comforts of a more modern car with space to carry a family and the camping gear, capability to carry it anywhere you want. Tows 3.5t same as the more modern cars, all for under 10k total. Like I said, got mine for 6k, spent about 4k on preventative maintenance. Has now got 440k on the clock with no signs of failing any time soon. You just cannot get the same quality, capability, comfort, reliability and usability anywhere else in any other brand.
