When I worked new construction HVAC I was given a 2 wheel drive express 2500 van with a possi rear, and some knobby rear tires I drove around most of the houses I worked on, I wasn't walking a van load of material around a house. You'd be amazed at what 2wd and a possi rear will do in red mud on a jobsite, especially when it's not yours.

Well, I am relatively new to vans. I currently own a 2019 15 passenger express van 3500 2wd, previously owned a 2000 dodge ram van 1500 2wd (cargo) and previously a 12 passenger 2001 express van 1500 2wd. I say I'm new to this Van world because this is the first van I truly pay attention to, I really get into knowing the plattform, the mods available, modifying it myself, etc. The past ones were merely there for utility purpose. But, I'm an automotive mechanical engineer, so I say this from that perspective. First, any modification will come with a gain in some areas and a loss in others. Lifting a van will give better articulation and ground clearance, but it will result in a vehicle that becomes more prone to tip over, will handle worse at high speeds and will become less fuel efficient (aerodinamics get severly worse as you get away from the ground. Even with stock tires). Large tires will add comfort, will allow better traction off road and will provide better protection for wheels and suspension components if you hit pot holes and other obstacles at significant speeds, but they will kill your fuel efficiency very fast. Remember those tires are at least 50% heavier, their weight is also farer than in stock tires (try lifting a 1ft and a 3 ft pole from the tip and tell me which is harder). They also put a lot of stress on some suspension components (yeah, they protect them under hard instant loads like speedbumps, rocks and potholes, but they stress those components under normal conditions). 4WD will allow you to always have at least 2 wheels spinning in different axles, but 4wd also puts more friction in the drivetrain and adds more force transfer points (transfer case), so it will make your mpg drop too. Remember the van (and any other vehicle) was designed to have certain caracteristics and capabilities. They are already a compromise in a balanced point. Move those capabilities and characteristics positively and you will alter other things negatively (the rope is always 1ft long, you can pullnit one way to have more of it, but the other side looses rope, you are moving it, not making it grow). Finally. Towing... 4WD really doesn't affect towing capability in a substancial way. You add a bit of payload to the van, but you can go far over specs safely if you know what you are doing (if you know the science of towing, if not, you better do the math and stick to the ratings privided by the manufacturer). What you really eant to pay attention while towing with a modified van is speed. Remember you are higher off the ground, you have big tires that will dance more in and out the wheel rim while cornering, you have less suspension life that you think you have left... so, the van now becomes like an SUV for towing. You better go slower, light on the sreering and be concious of your brakes. If you plann on towing heavy consistently, I strongly suggest you get a big brake kit from a reputable brand. I strongly suggest you consider going wider as you go taller to minimize the effects of a higher center of gravity. I suggest you get wide wheels to minimize the swirl of your tires while cornering. And please, do ypur homework about weight distribution for towing (not only hitch, but mainly how to load the weight in the trailer itself). I know this is long, but i hope it helps at least 1 person.

I tow a 22 foot travel trailer with my 2wd Express. After you installed my 2" front end lift, I kept the original stock diameter 15" tires because I have no problems towing in the peak of summer up long steep grades. I did have a posi unit installed to help. I've had full time 4wd vehicles with large tires. I noticed that without a gear change, low end suffered and stopping distances increased. If you drive a regular size van and have to ask about gas mileage, you need to have a mommy mobile.

I have ALWAYS had 4x vehicles. Snow country. Trucks, Subaru wagons, SUVs...now I have 2wd med high topper wheel chair van (E350) and just bought four of the last 2014 ambos from where I got our 2 wheelchair vans. LOVE LOVE LOVE the vans. All have limited slip ... I carry 4 tire chains, 4 tire cables (faster highway speed) ...I used to run PSD's and a Cummins...I DONT miss them (several are still here on the farm in various vehicles as "projects") ...I am LOVING the 5.4 and v10s. I am caching the ambos for spare running vehicles (2 run , 2 need engines or trannys as they were robbed to supply other fleet ambos w/ parts, 80 vehicles in service) . Listening to the fleet mechanics on how much they HATE the new Transit and dodge promaster has prompted me to bolster up my E350 supplies. Winter camping/travel had me trusting the diesels LESS, and I HATE the noise. ... have slept at -28 f in my old cars....give me gasoline. One of the ambos is fully gutted..may try a full closed cell foam build out w/ wood stove.

I still have my '95 4WD Suburban and just finished a road trip from Texas to Joshua Tree NP, and back. My average was 11 mpg...for some stretches I got 13 mpg. Posted speed limits of 75 mph and 80 mph didn't help either...if you limit yourself to 70 mph to conserve fuel, you'll get pushed off the road. I'm running 33" tires with a modest lift, and my heaviest load was photographic equipment and some necessities...nothing outrageous. I did fabricate my own rear bumper and spare tire swing arm with a jerry can, so that did add quite a bit more weight, though.Thinking of retiring the Suburban and considering an Econoline van, something around 2014 or so.

Didn’t even mention the AWD!!! It’s definitely a great balance, kind of the in between. I drive well in snowy conditions (big bear) and do well on soft sand when trailering my kid’s off-road toys in the desert. When I don’t have my roofrack on it, I sit at 6’11” allowing me to park in a standard size garage (I have the shorter wheelbase 1500) I am running stock diameter all terrain tires (aftermarket wheels 20x9) which is helpful to keep mileage and speedometer where it should be. Insurance is cheap since it’s a 2004. Stock height keeps the center of gravity down. When it comes to need/want I would have to say mine was a want cause I rarely need it but I have always had jeeps so I have never been a fan of installing chains in the snow. So that’s why I said it’s a ‘want’ cause sure, I could use chains if I wasn’t so lazy lol

I have been debating this for years for a tow vehicle, 2wd or 4wd. I want to be able to camp and tow My Jeep with my rig. I have looked into a dually with cabover camper and trailer for Jeep. I have looked into 3/4 trucks with gooseneck, cabover camper, and room for Jeep. I have also looked at vans and box trucks. I think I have finally decided do to cost that a van is the way to go. I will be towing a decked out Jeep and with the idea of a rear locker and a winch the 2wd van would get me anywhere I want to go. I already own a prefect trailer for the Jeep so all I need is the van.

Yes need. Vans suck in the snow
@michaelbrinks8089
@michaelbrinks8089 4 жыл бұрын
Just some snow tires and mild lift kit on a van would make a very big improvement in snow VS stock all season tires....My 92 4x4 Blazer had some snow tires on it and I could drive thru 6 inches of fresh falling snow like it was nothing. But even in 2wd with the snow tires was WAY better than my moms 2000 Blazer 4x4 with the all season tires. Even in 4wd her blazer was literally worthless in snow with the all season tires.

If you get snow in the winter, 4WD will save you a lot of headaches. People who don't live in a northern climate know nothing about 4WD in the snow. With 4WD, you will never get stuck in the snow. With 2WD, you will get stuck EVERY time you go out in the snow.

on the flip side, 4WD/AWD can cause overconfidence and get you stuck much worse

I've been up to my bumper in snow in my 2wd sonata and with snow tires I did better than most awd Cuv's and small SUV's. I've still gotten stuck but that's nothing a shovel can't fix.
@Inmate533
@Inmate533 3 жыл бұрын
@@blackbeard1988 Yeah, but the bumper on a Sonata is only like 6 inches off the ground. I've gone through 3 feet of snow in my van in 4WD Low, and it does it like there isn't even snow on the ground. This is with regular BF Goodrich KO2 tires. WIthout 4WD, I'd have been screwed quite a few times.

I ran four brand new top of the line 10 ply Firestone studded snow tires ...on a 2wd...went as far as, and further than many 4x4's did up on our "no winter maintenance " mountain road. I ended up on the snowmobile trail and it was launching me every few seconds up k to the packed snow, then shimmied down to the base ... I had to back out 1/2 mile to turnout. VERY impressive.

Which one you can recommend to buy Transit or Express? I'm planning of lifting it with 35's. Thanks.
@WeldtecDesigns
@WeldtecDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Express if you want to do some offroading, they have a framed chassis. The same one out of the trucks therefore it is also much stronger and makes it good for towing. The transit is a good family van or camper van that doesn't need to be used for too much offroad abuse as it can cause some serious issues as they are unibodys which means they are a LOT less durable than a frame chassis van! It is all personal preference and what you plan on doing with it. Ill always recommend the Chevy express over a transit!

BTW, as bigger the wheels as better fuel economy, until the wheels are not too heavy. For ex 275/70/16 is 2% more then stoke size 245/75/16. That means a car's gas consumption will be less for 1%(a half of wheels diffarence). I've discovered this formula mayny years agoon diffarent cars. Keep in mid that you car computer does not know about biger wheels, so his milage and spead is wrong and you have to correct in your mind

But I would really like the wider platform like your 4wd, and I would also like a pushed forward approach with 33”-35” tire. 12.5” wide and I haven’t gone to the larger rotary yet. Suggestions for wheel and tire and lift, that I should be looking at?
