In games, it won't matter at the FPS level. But for CAD and Adobe (PS, ID, AI) programs, Dual, Quad or Octal memory management matters a lot. best example: 32 liter tub. It doesn't matter whether I fill or empty the water with 1 bucket or 4 buckets. There are also 4, 8, and 16 memory slots in a motherboard optimized for design.

well, in terms of performance there's an expected small penalty on the single channel, but nothing to worry about, maybe a 5% at best... On Dual channel's 2x8 vs 4x4, the more memory banks on 4x4 might give just a very very little real world advantage, but they came at the price of being less futureproof and harder to upgrade. Nowadays there are several tittles that even if they work ok with 8gb of ram, they really use between 8 and 10gb, so in order to let the game play at his best at least 12gb are needed, but we all know that the correct way to go is to use 16gb in dual channel (since there's no way to use 3x4gb in dual channel, and neighter 1x8+1x4) so by taking 4x4 when the add-ram-time comes, (and it will be needed for the current gen of CPUs at some point in time) the 4x4 will have about no resale value compared to 2x8. 32gb is plain overkill for gaming, but it is shure as hell a nice futureproof purchase, and it can be done with 4x8gb without feeling bad about it

Computers can be confusing. Even though people are correctly pointing out that this is not quad channel memory, it does not take away from the benchmark, because it shows that 4 Dimms vs 2 Dimms vs 1 Dimms makes a noticeable difference. In some games it can even be as stark as 20-30 fps from 4 Dimms vs 1 Dimm. Pretty nutzy stuff. I'm putting 2 more Dimms in my motherboard, because I thought I had 4 x GB, but I actually have 2 x 8 Gb in at the moment.

Just to clarify for people who dont consider themselves as "tech-savvy".. Quad channel doesnt mean you have 4 sticks of RAM. It means the CPU can address all 4 sticks at the SAME TIME. If you only have a dual channel motherboard/cpu then it doesnt matter how many sticks of ram you have, the CPU will only be able to address 2 of those sticks at a time. Other videos using an actual quad channel CPU for the test show 15-20fps more on average for the same game titles.

@@aadisahni I placed this comment a year ago... had to rewatch the video. check 1:24 for example quad channel is not a thing on a ryzen 1400. so quad channel is dual channel with 4 ranks. ranks being stick accesible sides on DDR stick. 8GB is generally single rank. 16GB usuelly dual rank.(both sides covered in ddr modules) having more ranks gives a slight performance advantage, but we are talking 1~2% dual channel in the 2x8 (dual channel with 2 ranks) config looks to be underperforming in the dips in upwards of 20% compared to the "quad channel" aka imposible to not be dual channel setup, which is crazy as dual channel provides double the bandwith & reduces latency.
@Hzq_ali
@Hzq_ali 6 жыл бұрын
The tests are not a gpod representation on how better dual channel is vs single channel. The tests were done using high settings which utilizes the gpu more than the cpu. Try lowering the settings down to medium or low and you'll see a big difference in the 1% lows and the avg fps compared to single channel.

I was thinking this was going to be on Thread Ripper, 4x4GB would be the same as 2x8GB. Unless you overclock, then there's slightly more of a chance that 1 of the 4 sticks won't be able to keep up and hold the ram speeds back. Otherwise, possibly a very small latency penalty between the two for the 4x4GB if left at stock settings.

might be a bit late since this video is 2 years old but - 2 Things in order to compare quad-dual-single you would need a cpu and motherboard capable of all 3 setups. the cpu mentioned cannot. secondly in order to see a difference in ram performance you would need to be cpu bound. most of the test here your gpu is int the 90%+ range meaning its doing all the word while the ram and cpu was having a tea party :| without the gpu. running higher frames and lower settings is better for testing cpu/ram performance. But since its two years later you probably know all that by now

You should always check your motherboard manual. For ASRock Extreme 4 it says it supports Dual Channel Memory, implying that with 4 modules it will still be Dual Channel. And I remember reading somewhere that 4 modules running Dual Channel is less efficient, (of course, when it comes to RAM speed, it will be negligible.) "It is unable to activate Dual Channel Memory Technology with only one or three memory modules installed." And of course each module must be identical to the others.
@Coolgamer400
@Coolgamer400 6 жыл бұрын
three modules do work too, as long as there is the same amount of Memory in each Channel. if not, the speed will change (sometimes dual, sometimes single). Also you can mix ram as you like. "dual channel" is no feature of the ram, but of the memory controller. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bF6ynnuorJemapY (german...)

For compatibility, best option is 2 identical DIMMs, refer to your motherboards QVL for memory compatibility... I went with 2*8gb of Corsair vengeance 3200mhz ddr4 (RGB) to go with my Ryzen 5 2600x and it works very well! My motherboard is Asus Tuf b450m plus gaming. Steelseries had a good deal on their rebranded Syberia V2 a few time ago and I think it was 50$. I have the Syberia V2 and they are amazing, specially in comfort, I have a way more expensive creative headset however I can't even use them since they hurt my ears in like a hour, sometimes sound quality means nothing if you can't even use the headphones for an hour... It's dual channel x 2 memory channels (A+B)... However I don't think having 4 sticks vs 2 is really the benefit here as much as having Single Ranked vs Dual Ranked memory. Pretty sure those 4gb sticks are single ranked and the 8gb sticks are dual ranked (the 16gb stick might be dual or quad ranked). I would be interested to see those same 4gb sticks work in 8 and 16gb configurations on a game that utilizes less than 8gb (to remove memory size from equation) of ram to see if there's a difference... that, to me, would tell me whether or not having more sticks of ram is the real benefit, or whether having single ranked vs dual/quad ranked ram would be more beneficial.

2 sticks vs 4 in dual channel will be best as there is less latency and the memory controller in the CPU doesn't have to work quite as hard, you would get more stability with an overclock. Single channel is always going to carry a performance penalty as you are losing about half you memory bandwidth. Most CPU's including this one can't run quad channel.
