well, in terms of performance there's an expected small penalty on the single channel, but nothing to worry about, maybe a 5% at best... On Dual channel's 2x8 vs 4x4, the more memory banks on 4x4 might give just a very very little real world advantage, but they came at the price of being less futureproof and harder to upgrade. Nowadays there are several tittles that even if they work ok with 8gb of ram, they really use between 8 and 10gb, so in order to let the game play at his best at least 12gb are needed, but we all know that the correct way to go is to use 16gb in dual channel (since there's no way to use 3x4gb in dual channel, and neighter 1x8+1x4) so by taking 4x4 when the add-ram-time comes, (and it will be needed for the current gen of CPUs at some point in time) the 4x4 will have about no resale value compared to 2x8. 32gb is plain overkill for gaming, but it is shure as hell a nice futureproof purchase, and it can be done with 4x8gb without feeling bad about it

Just to clarify for people who dont consider themselves as "tech-savvy".. Quad channel doesnt mean you have 4 sticks of RAM. It means the CPU can address all 4 sticks at the SAME TIME. If you only have a dual channel motherboard/cpu then it doesnt matter how many sticks of ram you have, the CPU will only be able to address 2 of those sticks at a time. Other videos using an actual quad channel CPU for the test show 15-20fps more on average for the same game titles.

The tests are not a gpod representation on how better dual channel is vs single channel. The tests were done using high settings which utilizes the gpu more than the cpu. Otherwise, possibly a very small latency penalty between the two for the 4x4GB if left at stock settings.

You should always check your motherboard manual. For ASRock Extreme 4 it says it supports Dual Channel Memory, implying that with 4 modules it will still be Dual Channel. And I remember reading somewhere that 4 modules running Dual Channel is less efficient, (of course, when it comes to RAM speed, it will be negligible.) "It is unable to activate Dual Channel Memory Technology with only one or three memory modules installed." And of course each module must be identical to the others.
@Coolgamer4006 жыл бұрын
three modules do work too, as long as there is the same amount of Memory in each Channel. if not, the speed will change (sometimes dual, sometimes single). Also you can mix ram as you like. "dual channel" is no feature of the ram, but of the memory controller. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bF6ynnuorJemapY (german...)

its not you might not running dual channel when using not identical 2 stick of rams (same type, same brand) but might work too, so uncertain

using reliable brand can increase chance of it running, example on laptops which 1 'stick' is soldered on board

Can you do this exact same test with an SSD and M.2 and see if there is a difference in performance, because speeds are more consistent in SSD and M.2, also try it in 4K will show a more reasonable difference.

what's the point of testing the number of memory channels when the video card is 100% loaded? RAM provides data for the CPU if the video card is 100% loaded - the processor is idle to some extent - we just see the performance of the video card

@Floppyflipflops4736 жыл бұрын
For compatibility, best option is 2 identical DIMMs, refer to your motherboards QVL for memory compatibility... I went with 2*8gb of Corsair vengeance 3200mhz ddr4 (RGB) to go with my Ryzen 5 2600x and it works very well! My motherboard is Asus Tuf b450m plus gaming. The QVL should be the same or more compatibility as you have a more expensive and more featured board.

Search well, you might find a good deal on those 100$ for around 50$... My friend bought the Kingston HyperX Cloud II for 50 pounds and they are around 120eur where I live... Steelseries had a good deal on their rebranded Syberia V2 a few time ago and I think it was 50$. I have the Syberia V2 and they are amazing, specially in comfort, I have a way more expensive creative headset however I can't even use them since they hurt my ears in like a hour, sometimes sound quality means nothing if you can't even use the headphones for an hour... It's like if they offer you a Ferrari and you can't afford the gasoline, you would only sell it right away :)

@nayt33z6 жыл бұрын
It's dual channel x 2 memory channels (A+B)... However I don't think having 4 sticks vs 2 is really the benefit here as much as having Single Ranked vs Dual Ranked memory. Pretty sure those 4gb sticks are single ranked and the 8gb sticks are dual ranked (the 16gb stick might be dual or quad ranked). I would be interested to see those same 4gb sticks work in 8 and 16gb configurations on a game that utilizes less than 8gb (to remove memory size from equation) of ram to see if there's a difference... that, to me, would tell me whether or not having more sticks of ram is the real benefit, or whether having single ranked vs dual/quad ranked ram would be more beneficial.
@CodedXtreme4 жыл бұрын
So basically the more you divided the heat the less the heat occur.
@theHardwareBench Жыл бұрын
2 sticks vs 4 in dual channel will be best as there is less latency and the memory controller in the CPU doesn't have to work quite as hard, you would get more stability with an overclock. Single channel is always going to carry a performance penalty as you are losing about half you memory bandwidth. Most CPU's including this one can't run quad channel.
@Alexiel-f6o5 жыл бұрын
Tip always go dual channel its normally best option overall. But 4 x4gb is still okay.. Ryzen gains alot from dual channel normally and once you oc ram as well it gets better
