Quick question, why walk into the bush and not inside the car when the elephant came close? 25:19 we just returned from our first self drive safari in Botswana and we did the exact opposite when elephants walked through our campsite
@4xoverland2 ай бұрын
What protection is a car against an elephant if you cannot drive it away? None. To an elephant, the threats are the creatures inside the car, not the car itself. I was acting in a submissive way and the elephant was happy with that. And I was no longer a threat. If I had climbed inside the car, I remain a threat and then if I start the engine, the noise startles the elephant, and again I am a threat. Had there been predators around, I would have done things differently.

I was raised camping in the mountains in bear country and we hardly gave bears a second thought. Camping in Kenya and Tanzania the first time I was so excited and thought a lot about hyenas, lions, elephant and hippos. I remember sitting in my tent one night and shining my flashlight into the bush only to see yellow eyes flashing back at me. Not five minutes after we went to our tents the hyenas were in sniffing the campfire. One time in the Serengeti I was walking to the ablution block when a warthog came rushing at me from the deep grasses. Scared the crap out of me (no pun intended). Another time I was making sandwiches for lunch when a baboon came running across the area we had set up in and jumped right onto the table and grabbed the loaf of bread. I had the bread knife in my hand and flashed it toward the beast, he snarled and showed me his huge canines, I ran one way and he ran the other with our bread. All was well and I have great memories for the rest of my life.

Hi Andrew, great video. Makes me thinks back to Botswana where, in a camp, I parked fairly close to the fence under some large shaded trees. Trying to go to the drivers side passenger seat to get my shower things took me about 40 min due to the elephants being at the fence messing in the trees next to the camp fence. The sounds of animals at night really add to the excitement and verh little comes close .

ASPW great series, loving it. I do most of my traveling in the arid parts of South Africa, especially the Kalahari. Majority of the time between November and February!!!! The hottest time of the year and also the quietest time of the year as not many people enjoy the heat.... I hang one of those 20litre camping showers under a tree with a tiny 12v fish tank pump, I have made a hessian cover for the bag that I keep damp to keep the water cool, and every hour or so I stand under the shower to cool down, works brilliantly. Also wet my shirt, also works well..... Enjoy you trip in SA, look forward to the next episode........

Inthe meantime we will live in our stone Bush farm cottage in the Lower Mpushini Conservancy where we still hear the nightjars, jackal, Caracal, zebra, several owl species, and bat eared fox. Beautiful Natal Sweethorn thicket with tall themeda Savanah and Sieberana woodland. Seriously want to get back to Mkuze, Cape Vidal, Mfolozi/ Hluhluwe and Kruger... thank you, ngiyabonga Numzaan!

There were heaps of elephants my camp in Khwai Safari Grounds. One morning I counted around 40 drinking about 100m from my vehicle. Also had some walk right though the camp, but they were very relaxed and I was told they were quite used to people. What worried me more was the old grumpy hippo which would just appear out of the bush because it was short enough to be hidden, but the camp hosts said it was only dangerous if you got very close to it.

Your walk to/from the shower reminds me of night spear fishing in areas where sharks are known to be. I've no problem doing that as I grew up with it, but I'd have trouble doing what you did, walking to/from the shower as I've never been to Africa and don't know the animals there. Thanks for sharing another great video with us.

@squatch24612 ай бұрын
@@BubblesTheCat1 I've no doubt the animals in general are as you say, and know that elephants are to be respected from a distance if possible. The predators I'm less inclined to think are afraid rather than they don't recognize us as a prey animal. I'd also prefer to not give them the chance to discover the truth when we are not prepared, and/or alone.

This comment is for the algorithm so please don't regard it as a 'you should do this'. When you were surrounded in the dark I immediately thought of Harry Dwyer's little RIB (he's going round the uk in it) with a 360 night vision camera on it. Would be very handy to be sat somewhere safe and pan around to check the perimeter. Of course I'm sure it was very expensive and I think was provided by raymarine. If anyone hasn't seen Harry's series it's well worth a watch. A bit like Andrew's trips but in a small rib going round the uk coast.

"turned on the light - really for security…". Yeah, much better when the lion can properly see you and don't miss his jump. Being just wounded is not fun, better a clean bit to the neck and get it over with. No, really, I hope you'll survive this trip too. I still remember how rather scary some nighttime animal noises can be in the bush - especially when they are close.
@4xoverland2 ай бұрын
the light makes is easier for me to see animals, and less easy for them to see me. Animals depend on surprise when hunting. I remove the element of surprise by lighting the area. I've spent many years living in close proximity to animals.

Way to melodramatic. My wife, 4 children and I camped at Third Bridge in 2019 surrounded by elephants grazing in the thickets around us. They were aware of our presence, and we were aware of theirs. They never bothered with us, and we never felt the need to cower behind our car or caravan. We did drive to the ablutions at night even though the building was only 100 metres from our campsite, and we kept our eyes wide open and ears alert. Almost seems like you have forgotten the joy of camping in Africa. You sound too scared to be enjoying yourself. Can't remember you being so afraid in any of the videos you made here before you left for Australia. Take it easy, Andrew. Nothing will happen to you except that your soul will come to life again. Anyway, judging from the other comments, many people are very impressed that you survived Nxai Pans to tell the tale.
@4xoverland2 ай бұрын
That comment is really patronising. How different people perceive this experience. But I was the only one who was there, and the only one being judged by people like yourself. Was it meant to make me feel bad about the experience?
@AslamBhorat2 ай бұрын
Not trying to make you feel bad. Just came to my mind that this video is so different from the early series you made when you were still living in SA. I really enjoyed the search for the source of the Okavango, your trip to Zambia and your solo crossings of the Kalahari. When I saw that you were back in Africa, I was hoping to get more of the same. This latest series has been a disappointment. Will skip the rest of the series. Won’t bother you again. Cheers, mate.

hi andrew quick question why doesn't Africa have fly's like Australia
@4xoverland3 ай бұрын
very good question and simple answer. Africa has dung naturally occurring dung beetles that consume the dung before flies can lay eggs in it. They have tried but failed to breed them in Australia.
@milanagel3 ай бұрын
Also, I think, it might be because most animals that die in Africa get fairly quickly eaten by predators, raptors, scavengers. Almost everything is eaten. In Australia, when an animal die, it will most often just rot away - ample time for flies to lay eggs. I stand to be corrected.
