Andrew, another thing that these engines (and many other CRD engines) suffer from is fine oil mist from the crankcase ventilation system mixing with hot exhaust gas, from the EGR system, and coking up inside the inlet manifold. The stock oil separator doesn't work very well, and what make matters worse is that the inlet is above the timing chain at the left front of the rocker rocker cover. The timing chain throws oil into the inlet to the separator. Arguably the best separator is a Provent 200 manufactured by MANN+Hummel in Germany. MANN is one of the worlds largest manufacturer of diesel engines (trucks, trains, ships, etc.) and they developed these because conventional oil separators can't remove very fine oil particles, invisible to the naked eye, which over time was leading to failure of the compressor wheels in the turbocharger. To trap these small oil particles the filter media must also consist of very small diameter fibres. Many oil separators (AKA catch cans) use stainless steel filters that can't trap small oil particles. BTW the chemical engineering department at the university in Perth did much of the R&D, for MANN+Hummel, on the filter used in the Provent 200 (they do a lot of research work on filtration for industry and MANN+Hummel is a large client). The earlier you stop the oil entering the air intake system the better. The coke builds up quite quickly and cleaning the inlet manifold is a relatively large and expensive job on the Toyota V8 diesel, something to be avoided.

@johndobbyns86517 жыл бұрын
I would argue with that. The best driving lights on the market are Fyrlyt Nemesis 9000. LED and HID lights can produce a lot of light, but their poor colour spectrum is a significant disadvantage and actually makes it harder to distinguish many animals that are at risk of collision. When we see objects, we are seeing the reflected light. When the driving light produces very little light of the wavelength corresponding with the colour of the object it is not reflected back for our eyes.
@okm887 жыл бұрын
John Do but you gotta take into account how much watts the nemesis 9000 takes along with the wiring.
@johndobbyns86517 жыл бұрын
Sure +2gud4umenglez take the watts into account for wiring and alternator capacity, but at the end of the day they are the best driving lights, and no one will ever remove them because of the watts (unless they are stealing them). They are less expensive than quality led/hid combos, they are far superior for seeing animals and for overall vision especially when there is water (rain or fog), or dust in the air.

People complain about the new diesels because of how complicated and touchy they are with bad fuel. The upside? Add a chip and almost double your power. The american pickup diesel scene has its own niche now with trucks making 1000ftlbs of torque from a few bolt ons. Multiple magazines in the grocery store, multiple forms of racing and a huge aftermarket. It's keeping the diesel market alive with the turbo gas options available on new trucks. Enjoy the new power

Andrew, I really like the concept of the fuel filter kit but I see one fundamental flaw, because this filter is a pre filter it makes the factory filter obsolete, any particles above 5um will be caught in the pre filter, I suspect this would mean you end up replacing the pre-filter element more often and the standard Toyota filter will never need replacing as it is doing none of the filtering. I believe this would better if installed as a final filter after the Toyota filter and before the injection system. The filters should be set up from coarse to fine in order from the full tank forward with the finest filter being the last in the system. Eg 30um > 20um > 5um (20um being the Toyota filter)
@4xoverland7 жыл бұрын
I see your argument. But on the other side, with the filter fitted after the standard filter, I would then need to replace both filters, instead of just one.
@MrFastrhino7 жыл бұрын
4xoverland i think you would get better longevity of your 5 micron filter which are a lot more expensive to replace than the Toyota filter.
@4xoverland7 жыл бұрын
True. But the Toyota filter has no visual way to see if its contaminated. The aux one does. This way around, I will very rarely if ever change the Toy filter and and change the aux filter often. Having the Toy filter first means that I would have to change the Toy filter frequently, and the aux filter just as frequently as I would if it was first in tine. There are arguments both ways, and I have given this a lot of thought, and believe that this is the best way round for doing the primary job in keeping the injectors safe, at the lowest cost.
@MrFastrhino7 жыл бұрын
4xoverland I am too lazy to do a cost v benefit analysis and that would require hard data on how long between filter changes. I have the 2017 single cab ute and weighing the options. I might go with the PDP kit but reconfigure it so it filters post Toyota filter.
@toddhoffmaster60577 жыл бұрын
Do they use lift pumps in Australia? AirDog is one of the brands here in the US and their pumps do wonders for diesel engines by providing cleaner fuel with both a 2 micron filter and a separate water separator plus the advantage of a fuel pump to ease the work of the injection pump at getting the fuel to the desired psi.

@scottzimmermann56497 жыл бұрын
Andrew, love the show! ....nothing is free, especially power. are you concerned about drivetrain stress, reduced range and pollution? Also, manufacturers are typically aware of the performance their mechanicals are capable of, and the tune is set for the performance/pollution/durability they feel is best or environmentally friendly or mandated. the factory programming isn't arbitrary. each turbo has a sweet spot on the compressor map and is chosen for the application, more diesel raises the egt's, etc. A plug and play chip can make my Ford put out over 1200NM, but, I'll pay in efficiency, pollution, and warranty. It would have been interesting if you had built out the truck, taken a 3 month holliday with it, and set a base line of data, to observe what was gained and what was lost with the changes.

Hey Andrew. I'm no expert but my logic wonders why toyota would not tune their engines like this from the get go making the vehicle more appealing than it already is? Surely they have the tech and funds to improve the ecu technology in house? My guess is that they are aiming at maintaining the the perception of reliability in their brand. The only thing I can think of is who the intended majority drivers are and how they will be using the vehicle(as you mentioned in a previous video, mines). The "detuned" motor possibly handles a thrashing(fleet vehicle) better than the chipped vehicle does in the long term, I'd imagine you will only use the high performance setting in selected driving conditions. Anyway, just thinking out loud. I realise your review may be slightly biased considering the strategic product placement in your video. Your experienced/ expert thoughts on this would be interesting to hear.

CACressida That is what I discussed in my comment. So in your opinion the chip reduces reliability? Thats the Crux of my discussion.
@4xoverland7 жыл бұрын
I feel no differently to what I said. However, i would not set it on nr1 full power setting all of the time, and then drive it a max power on and on, because how can that possibly be good for the engine? That's why there are other settings. But I think I will shoot a response video to clarify what I have learnt, and to air my opinions of the many reasonable questions this video has raised.
@lupus71947 жыл бұрын
If I was Mr Toyota, I would think like this: "For the troop carrier, 150kW / 430Nm is adequate and there's not much competition anyway. That leaves plenty of room to up the power to 200kW / 600Nm in the landcruiser and still leaves space for more again if we do a Lexus with this engine." Also, there is room to increase power in future models. I'd say it's all about marketing their range of products over several years. You see the same thing from all manufacturers - increase power as you go up the model range and over time. People like Porsche are masters at it - want more power - pay more money.

Agree on the 2nd fuel filter even i have a 30 micron pre filter but i would never install a performance chip. Horror stories of over tuning and crack pistons, I hope this doesn't happen to you. over-fueling is is the start to a mountain of problems. Please consider a customer made stainless steel snorkel and a customer made airbox.
@4xoverland7 жыл бұрын
Horror stories are true with cheap plug & play chips. This is in a different class altogether. Not the same kind of product but stories has lumped them into one. I will fit an ordinary Safari Snorkel upgrade. I think that the standard air box is sufficient.
@mts2hn7 жыл бұрын
Also consider an upgraded intercooler( Cross country, HPD), exhaust and a catch can to prevent oil getting into the intercooler. Its more reliability mods than performance mods.
