The designers at jeep were not worried about making the Grand Cherokee customizable because the have the Wrangler for that. A Wrangler can just about be built from the chassis up from aftermarket parts. It’s really incredible actually. There is an entire economy over here in the states that is based on Wrangler modification.
@loganholmberg22955 жыл бұрын
It's still pretty customizable. Sure it's not a rock crawler like a Wrangler can be but I know a lot of people that Mopar out their Cherokees and Renegades cause they are comfortable to drive for long periods of time in the muck with their families and be a primary car at the same time. You would be surprised at the aftermarket options you can get on Cherokees, and even Compasses and Renegades. I'd take any of them over the SUV options Ford or Chevy are offering nowadays. Are they as off road worthy as a Jeep? No. Can you turn them into pretty capable offroaders thanks to the Mopar aftermarket? Yes.

The point is really that it is more difficult than other vehicles in the same category, not that it can't be done or that Jeep weren't worried about it.

Jake Lunniss Trust me, i get that.the family owns a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2) I was just pointing it out for Andrew. Believe it or not the, Jeep WK2 only has 2 more cubic feet of storage than the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (JKU). And the JKU is like only three inches shorter than the WK2. On paper, at least, the two vehicles are in the same class. Owning a 2008 JKUR, the WK2 is a much better general purpose (read on road/off road) vehicle than the JKU. Thats why I pointed it out. I would much rather be driving a WK2 daily in account of the shorter wheel base alone. I have had lots of trouble going from my previous vehicle to the JKUR for that reason alone. But i have this vehicle because that’s just how things worked out. If Andrew does buy the WK2, i hope he buys an aftermarket bumper that improves its angle of attack. With the current front facia there just isnt great wheel access on account of all the air dams.

@@macmurfy2jka Good point. But then allot of the mods people do is go to a sturdier bumper. I know I would just to put a good winch on it. That's what I really like about the new RAM Power Wagon os that you can get a winch from the factory. I wish they did that on some of the Jeep models. I know they offer a bumper on the JL that can fit a winch but I don't think they offer a winch from the factory do they?

As a former owner of 4 Discoveries I now own a 79 dual cab. I wouldn’t pay the increased price for the Discovery 5 as I saw no value in why I had to pay $20,000 more than the previous model for lesser features? Landrover no doubt lost a heap of customers on the latest model! It’s less practical & way to expensive. Even after being offered a significant discount by Landrover on the purchase price I still stepped back in space & time & bought the Landcruiser 79 dual cab & I love it.😊

I agree with everything you said Andrew great review, however being a pajero owner i do have one hack for all the kids playing at home, if you buy a pajero with a rear differential lock, it turns off the Traction Control making the beeping nul and void. with a few modifications like my gen 4 bash plates, lift, bar with winch and 33 inch muddies, it is very capable. and with it approaching 270k km it has only had a new alternator due to my mud fetish ;)

The Pajero is a highly underrated 4WD , very reliable, but the 3.2 diesel with the Aisan auto, Mitsibishi Superselect transmission is the pick, a mandatory 2 inch lift kit, All terrain tyres and it will go as far as any other of the best. Landrover and Jeep have had appalling reliability and build quality over the years and are not popular at all in remote outback Australia or for that matter most of Africa,

yeah mate think that would just go to prado. cant beat a good ole toyote. from one brexan to another we know that rover aint winnin' in reliability, it didnt in the 90s and its even more complicated now. jeep is a chrysler brand with typical midrange american reliability, although a supercharged 6+ liter v8 engine could wear a bit on the drivetrain. mitsubishi is a bit of a mystery but should be okay. i have myself a 2007 lexus gx470 (a prado with a bit of luxury inside) and its fantastically reliable. the 4.7 liter v8 puts out more power than i know what to do with and center locking diff, traction control, and fantastic low range makes the limestone around here seem a bit less jagged.

They've all become a lot more complicated and impossible to fix. They could be just as durable as the older ones (doubtful), but the difficulty and cost of maintenance and orders of magnitude higher. Toyota is the only one still doing well in this category.

@funkyfedaykin5 жыл бұрын
@@willyd-adv I was thinking of those that are kitted out with off-road gear with custom cabinets on the back and often a rooftop tent + awning. Dual cabs seem to be popular firstly because they are easily customised (as Andrew noted in the video this is a key thing for such vehicles) with plenty of aftermarket options. Next they are intended to be versatile off road and comfortable on road. They're not prohibitively expensive, and they're often able to be used as a regular vehicle when not overlanding.

(a bit bland compared to the others but practical. Which is what think Toyota was going for in its offroad use.) I absolutely agree that the interior of the Discovery looks better, but lets be honest id never take that vehicle off road (especially with those low profile wheels.) furthermore trying to maintain that interior with the soft leather dash etc would be a nightmare. The Jeep Cheroke, in terms of power performance and price range with all of its fruits it ticks all the boxes but and this is a big but.....their notorious name for unreliability. and again agree i think the mitsubishi Pajero is abit outdated. Having owned a 2011 Pajero Exceed 3.2 for 4 years and, now a 2016 Prado Kakadu 2.8 for 6, I think I can be a fair judge. I have also driven a 2018 facelift GXL as a loan car for some added comparison. Here’s my experience from owning both: 1. Engine: The 3.2l did engine is noisy and rough but has a little more grunt that the 2.8l d4d of the Prado. In saying that, I have no problem driving around town and getting up to highway speeds in the Prado. The 2.8l is far more refined and quieter. One thing that I noticed right off the bat is that the throttle of the Prado is tuned more for offroad driving than it is for on road driving. You have to depress the accelerator pedal a lot further to get the thing moving when compared with my old Pajero. This gave an impression of the Pajero being a lot more responsive. Installing a throttle controller made a world of a difference and I now find the car nearly as responsive as my old Pajero. 2. Transmission: I was happy with the 5-speed auto in my Pajero and am happy with the 6-speed auto in my Prado. In saying that, while towing my 1.8t ATM camper, I did notice the transmission temps of the 5-speed staying around 10°C-15°C cooler than the Prado’s 6-speed. I will get to that in the towing section. 3. Handling: This is where I was the most surprised when going from a Pajero to the Prado. I read multiple forums that talked about the Prado handling like a boat while the Pajero handled like a car due to its monocoque construction and ifs + irs. These comments were most likely made by people that have driven a lower grade Prado and not one with Toyota’s KDSS system. I can without a shadow of a doubt say that the Prado Kakadu handles as well as a Pajero. It is flat through tight turns and not wallowy at all. There is very little body roll around turns. The Prado GXL that I had as a loan car was a different story. It was quite floaty, but not as bad as many of the forums make it out to be. 4. Offroad: Off road, the KDSS system allows the front and rear sway bars to move more freely again improving handling and better wheel articulation. The Pajero felt more unnerving on undulating offroad tracks with very little wheel travel and lots of wheels in the air time. One aspect of the Pajero that I appreciated was the fact that the rear diff was raised quite high off the ground and provided better clearance at the center when lifted. In saying that, I have yet to bottom out the Prado, even when stock. The added benefit of the Kakadu is that the rear of the vehicle can be raised by 2 inches with the push of a button because of its air suspension. While this does not change the diff height, it helps raise the fuel tank and rest of the body, which improves breakover and departure angles. I find the traction control of both cars excellent. The Kakadu also comes with a factory rear differential lock and crawl control, which my Pajero didn’t, although newer ones do come with a factory rear differential lock. 5. NVH: The Prado wins this hands down. The Pajero feels like a rattly, loud, harsh truck when compared to the Prado. Every minor imperfection in the road would send a shudder through the cabin of the Pajero and it got quite tiring on longer journeys. Many have suggested playing music louder to drown out the rattles, but that just made things worse because every door panel would vibrate with the slightest hint of bass. The Rockford sound system was a missed opportunity because of how badly the interior of the car rattled, making listening to anything with bass quite irritating. The JBL system in the Prado is far superior and nuanced with close to zero rattles. The suspension of the Pajero was also quite hard and brittle and I never quite go used to it. I find the suspension of the Prado more forgiving and supple. 6. Practicality: The boot of the Pajero is taller in stock form, but as deep and as wide as the Prado. If you were to remove the 3rd row seats of the Prado and install a false floor, the boot capacity would be identical. The Prado does have a sliding 2nd row so you can increase the depth of the boot quite substantially. Moving to the middle row of both vehicles, the Prado has bottle holders in both doors as well as a couple in the center arm rest. The Pajero only has a couple in the center arm rest. The Prado also has a digital hvac control in the rear vs a pair of knobs on the Pajero. In the Prado, you can also control the temperature/fan speed of the rear via controls in the front, which I find really handy. The front also has dual zone AC, which is great. There is also a fridge in the center console of the Kakadu, which I love. There are also no bottle holders in the door cards in the front row Pajero either, which the Prado has. 7. 2nd row seating: The Pajero was quite uncomfortable in the second row. You sit in a slightly squatting position because of how high the floor is and there is no room under the front two seats for you to stretch out, which my kids hated. The wheel arches on either side of the middle row seats impeded into the seats themselves, which gave my kids a sore back and bum on long journeys. The Prado has none of these problems and my kids love it. There is plenty of space under the front two seats to stretch out and the floor is quite a bit lower so no more squatting. Also, no wheel arches do deal with. 8. 3rd row seating: I found the 3rd row of the Pajero quite useless and almost never used them. There is almost no leg room for anyone over the age of 12 and because the middle row is fixed, this cannot be remedied. The Prado on the other hand can easily accommodate an adult if you slide the middle row forward, while still having enough space for 2nd row occupants. It also helps that the 3rd row in the Prado can fold 50:50, so you can carry 6 passengers and still have space in the boot for some luggage. 9. Fuel capacity and economy: I regularly get between 1400km and 1500km from the 150l fuel tank in the Prado, which is brilliant. With the Pajero, I’d get around 850km from the 88L tank. Fuel consumption on both is around the same, between 10 - 10.5 l/100km with mixed city and highway driving. 10. Towing: The Pajero is a better tow vehicle. While the Prado tows my 1.8t camper quite well, I do find it slightly lacking power on steeper inclines. While the Pajero is no y62 or 200 series when it comes to towing, it did drive up the same inclines with a little more ease. It’s not night and day, but it is noticeable. I also noticed the transmission pan temperatures in the Prado to be higher than the Pajero by about 10°C-15°C while towing. I had to install a transmission cooler and lockup kit in the Prado to keep temperatures down, which has worked a treat. I rarely see temperatures exceeding 90°C anymore. 11. Reliability: I had to replace the top timing chain guides on the Pajero as well as get a valve clearance done every 30,000km, which I did twice while owning the vehicle. I had no major issues with the Pajero. With the Prado, I had the DPF replaced with upgraded hardware and software free of cost by Toyota. They also replaced the timing chain assembly with upgraded hardware free of cost. Since these have been replaced, I have had no issues with the Prado. 12. Price: I paid AUD 30,000 for the Pajero Exceed with 70,000ks on the clock back in 2014 and paid AUD 52,000 for the Prado Kakadu with 94,000km on the clock back in 2018. Is the Prado worth the $22,000, for the added refinement, comfort, and long-range fuel tank, while still being as good on and off road, I’d say yes, if you can afford it. My family and I have no regrets selling the old faithful for the Prado and have no plans of selling it.

Hi Andrew Great analysis regarding those vehicles. I own a Prado 150 (2015) and like you I too feel the interior's a little boring, it's true Toyota has had this model for ten years, one would think that would be plenty time for to make some meaningful refresh to that very bland interior. When I was in the market for a go-anywhere SUV I watched and red many many reviews and with a conviction even without a test drive, I already knew I wanted a Prado Landcruiser. Now from my experience of owning the Prado 150 (4yrs now) I believe the fundamentals of the Prado AKA "Landcruiser" is mostly a sound and reliable vehicle. Yes it's true this Toyota is still Mr reliable = Landcruiser" yes, its for this reason I am happy with my vehicle choice, it has not failed me yet 🤞.... 80% on road & 20%off road

Also I think the pajero has one of the most underrated traction controlsystems, it works brilliant. There are enough videos online which compare the jeep, toyota and the pajero, the prado and pajero are often the best cars in view of traction control systems. But yes the pajero is a bit outdated and not longer in production. But I also think, for everyone who search a real and affordeble 4x4, the pajero is a quit good choice. Is reliable, powerful drivetrain, timeless designed and in normal onroad use really good to drive. Additionally there are a huge amount of accessories for the pajero gen 4 on the market, to make him better in view of offroad performance if needed.

Great review and very funny end. Having replaced my stolen Disco 4 with a Disco 5, I must say I love it. But you're right, in many ways the Disco 4 was more practical and I do miss the drop down tailgate. I don't mind the look of the back end but I do miss the drop down tailgate. For everything else I use the vehicle for; long motorway journeys, towing a large caravan, carrying lots of stuff in incredible comfort, it's the perfect vehicle. But I don't go off road; a few muddy building sites and boggy fields aside. If I did, I'd have bought another Disco 4 without a thought. All this aside though, I can't disagree with any of your comments and observations regarding any of the vehicles. As I said, great review.

Andrew, I have followed and enjoyed your work for quite some time. I have however never seen you mention the VW Touareg? Apologies if I have missed it, but do you not rate it at all or is there any reason you have not done a review on it? I am specifically referring to the model with terrain tech ( low range, centre, and rear diff locks)?

Boy I tell you, even though I'm American and apparently biased the Quadra-Drive was FAR superior. It needed more maintenance than an open system with traction control but it was an actual lsd/locker as opposed to brake bakes. Quadra-drive was magic when it was maintained properly and it could fully and automatically lock the differentials smoothly and seamlessly. Land Rover's system, was mostly a test to see how fast you could make the three amigo's appear and disappear.

This was a great review Andrew. Just about spot on with this review, but out of all these I would go the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trialhawk. For me it's the best of both worlds, great off road, great tourer, great tow vehicle and I don't care what other say, love the look and they are very comfortable, you have power seats to raise them up to a comfy height you know. You really can get some good after market gear for these now, and with a good set of off road tyres will keep up with the best and you don't need to change everything like the 70 series LC. Also don't have to put in a lift kit, lift it up with the air suspension when needed and put it back down when touring on the black top. Great diesel engine with class leading power, what more do you want. I'm a little bias, as I have a 2010 WH diesel and that's very good.

For all the Discovery 2 owners who really wish they had a center diff lock, I will let you into a secret, you do. It wasn't removed from the gearbox, probable for commonality with other vehicles. They just removed the linkage which is all accessible. You can link it back up with a few parts from the breakers yard or ebay. Lot's of KZbin videos on how to.

Great product comparison. I tend to watch the road and only cross check the gauges and really don't even notice the dash or controls once set when I start to drive. I prefer to have the key controls up and away from anything that can hit or accidently activate them. Toyota does a good job of that. All manufacturers need to rethink the traction control and provide a true off road version so we don't get the funny noises and beeping or limp mode activated when I really want power to the wheels - any wheel. Nice work Andrew.

Andrew you are saying that you can’t live with the Prado interior, probably is not the best interior but, how you can live with the 70 series interior? That interior is from a 30 old year car. How can you explain that?
@4xoverland4 жыл бұрын
I don't see that age has any bearing on it. Some interiors from cars made in the 60s' were the most interesting of all time. The Prado dash is far better in almost every respect but for the fact that it is deadly dull. The 70-series dash at least has character. (BTW This dash was first seen 12 years ago.)
@camiloortega17904 жыл бұрын
4xoverland yes, maybe was seen 12 years ago but, that kind of interior was the ones that 80’s and 90’s car. You love bashing the Disco 2, but do think about it this way; it ended up having a CDL, a ladder frame, solid axles, excellent clearance, excellent suspension travel and very acceptable on-road handling. It IS a better car than a Disco 1, the traction control with center lock is pretty good for it's time. I test drove a Disco 5 and holy cow that is a nice car. Flip on all the off roady bits and raise the suspension to the highest setting and that thing would go anywhere.
