@@DiggoryEuthymius Terenwizja isn't about methodical testing of SUVs. @@rameezahmed3637 Yes that's correct - I'm always baffled at how people seem to be on and off the power. With these Jeeps there's two systems they can have according to what level of options they're built with. The basic system uses the ABS system to cause same / similar effect as a mechanical Limited Slip Differential - ie. the wheel that tries to spin is clamped by its brake which forces drive to go to the other wheel. The differential itself is standard "open" design tho - so with that sytem you definitely need to MAKE it spin to then have it engage and do what you want. The higher level of drive system is the ELSD - Electronic Limited Slip Differential - which has a computer modulated hydraulic actuating Limited Slip Differential (I dont know if the brake lock system also functions with that system or is replaced totally). That ELSD is supposed to make spinning wheels un necessary as the drive SHOULD be proportioned effortlessly. The video says that Jeep has ELSD - but the way its behaving doesn't look like that's working at all.

Also, the jeep and the pathfinder are almost tie for the heaviest vehicle in the test. The jeep has much more weight in the front end being it is a diesel. The 3.0L Mercedes V6 diesel in the jeep is equal in weight to the larger 5.7L Hemi V8 that is also optional. At the end of the day, there are many unseen variables in a test like this.

You did a good review, I appreciated all the professional comments and explanations and also the fact that you tried to be as fair as possible. At the first obstacle, after the Nissan did those holes, I was thinking it is not fair for Jeep, but then you decided to make Pajero and Toyota go again on that obstacle. Excellent decision, this is the kind of comparison we want to see, not some unprofessional guys comparing good off roaders but with street tires with street SUVs and saying that they are the same.

Perhaps one of the best videos of its type on youtube. Kudos to the producer for arranging same set of tyres for all vehicles. The best performance was by 4runner, quite expected given its suspension articulation which assists the TC a lot. The star of the show however is Pajero, which despite having independent suspension and thus limited suspension articulation, managed to go toe to toe with 4runner in the first 2 tests. You couldn't get the Pajero with the 3.8l, or even 3.5l to make things a little more even in terms of engine output..? Luckily, its 4wd system is literally one of the best ever developed since it had to make up for the lack of power.

Nice collection of affordable 4WD IFS vehicles that most folks actually use daily. I almost purchased a Pajero with the Super Select 4WD years ago. It is good to see that it lives up to its Dakar winnings. Can't wait for the next set of videos on the FJ Cruiser, LX470, and what looks like a 2013-2015 LX570. If that is a 2000-2007 LX470, then you got 3 different versions of Toyota's ATRAC there. The up hill S turn shows how effective traction control can be in place of a front locker. A front locker would be nice but your steering would be affected during the turn. One odd thing I noticed in Toyota's ATRAC system when I wheel is that it is more effective when the front wheels are straight vs when it is turned. Maybe the ATRAC software is tuned to reduce braking power or the speed the brakes clamp down when the front wheels are turned in order to prevent breaking the CV axles? The Pajero's traction control looks very effective, even more so than ATRAC II+ that is in the 4th gen 4Runner. I wonder if it brakes at the same speed as "Rock" mode in a modern Toyota's multi-terrain select? More power is needed on the sandy uphill climb. The 4th gen 4Runner can be optioned with a 4.7 V8 (235hp from 2003-2004, and 260hp+ from 2005-2009) which would be helpful in the long sand dune uphill obstacle. Same with that generation of Pathfinder, it also can be optioned with a 5.6 V8. Pretty certain that the Jeep Grand Cherokee can also be optioned with either a 4.7 V8 or 5.7 V8. Sadly no V8 for the Pajero.
@aaronjohnson6923 жыл бұрын
No V8 in the pajero , but they could of chose the 3.5l V6 or 3.8 l V6 which have a lot more power than the 3.0l or even the 3.2l diesel would of been better

My 2005 4Runner would make quick work of these bullshit "obstacles" and these "drivers" suck. They apply power in the WRONG way and the wrong time(s.) My Dual overhead can 4.7L V8 and 3" lift, and 30 years of living and driving in Montana makes this look pathetic.

The 4runner demonstrates how suspensión modifications can boost wheel travel. But overall the 4runner was quite impressive. I'll love to see how an older Pajero does, I believe it had unfair advantage because its technology is the most recent when compared to the others. I'm surprised at the Pathfinder, maybe next time use the Xterra instead? Lovely video as always, I'm noe looking into getting a Jeep Cherokee as well, I've been toying with the idea of getting a 2008 Xterra for offroading.

That is not the only reason. The 4runner has a solid rear axle. Look closely and u will see the articulation difference between independent rear suspension and a solid rear axle. The jeep has a solid axle also but it just doesn't compare to the 4runner.
@wopmf4345FxFDxdGaa203 жыл бұрын
@@goodybrown5175 Bigger tires give a massive advantage, that's why the 4Runner shined here (alongside good traction control of course). Wheel travel is very useful, but if you have a very good 4WD system, it is going to replace a lot of what suspension used to do traditionally. Actually independent suspension also has one advantage on rutted roads; the wheels can still travel down at the moment when the diff bottoms out.
@goodybrown51753 жыл бұрын
@@wopmf4345FxFDxdGaa20 U might have a point but the more wheels that u can keep in contact with the ground the better. That is the major advantage of a solid axle. One wheel is forced up into the wheel well while the other is forced down to stay in contact with the ground. I understand everything you are saying but the experience Is so much different from inside the vehicle. Have u ever seen a fully independent off-roader doing extreme offroading? It always looks like it is about to flip because 2 wheels are completely in the air. With at least one solid axle u have a better chance of keeping wheels on the ground.

About 90% of SUV owners do NOT use it in these off road conditions. Other factors come in to play, such as storage capacity, fuel consumption, reliability, and price. I bought a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder, which was about 50% of the price of a same year Toyota 4Runner. The only problem with the Nissan Pathfinder was the radiator/ transmission defect caused by a transmission fluid line leak within the radiator. A transmission fluid line bypass or replacement of the original radiator solves this problem of 2005 to 2012 Nissan Pathfinders.

Good stuff. Some of them don't seem to understand their engine's power band (curve). They need to get the RPMs high enough so the engine can produce enough power. Unless they have an especially capable vehicle with a very high crawl ratio they're going to need to get the RPMs high enough to produce the torque needed for the obstacle.
@essequamvideri2 жыл бұрын
a front or rear locker would be a game changer, but I wonder if the drivers understand how the Nissan system works... the way is slow steady light application of throttle and hold it at low throttle while the traction control engages and walk thru the obstacle... NOT mashing the gas and letting off when it starts to move.

Quality brake pads with good initial bite are important on getting the most out of an off-road traction control system. If the pathfinder had better brake pads and the driver maintained a steady throttle the traction control would of been able to keep the car moving. I have an 06 just like that and my wheels never spin that much when lifted. Nissans ABLS system is great when used properly.

The rear independent suspension shows where it lacks off road capability on heavy crawling terrain, might need a rear locker and the problem is mostly solved IMO (also the heaviest vehicle out of all 4). But on the loose sand sections it showed what that suspension could do. Great to do overland in the desert and the beach. You are 300% correct about the brake pads, I was thinking the same!

I have had (and still have) Pajero's since 1992. My current one is a 2005 NP exceed. I have driven all over Australia and they have never missed a beat. With the super select 4 wheel drive, diff locks and combination monocoque body with built-in ladder frame (quite revolutionary), they have, at the price point, eclipsed with ease Patrol's and Cruiser's in many confronting conditions. Mitsubishi have always been disregarded by the industry media pundits, presumably because Toyota and Nissan have more "influence" but that is fine because I can get Pajero's and Triton's for the best bang for buck that there is. Fabulous vehicles that are easy to get through any terrain due to size and geometry.
