No. Linus did terrible job this time.The Quadro is optimized to run heavy overloaded scenes in 3D apps such as Maya, Max, Solidwork. They have nothing to do with the render of the scenes/video - but the viewport in this apps!!! He was talking bollox. He did not test any viewport.
@Alex-us2vw7 жыл бұрын
Lyubomir Ikonomov that's pretty much what he said at the end of the video if you didn't realize lol. When he said unless you're Pixar you don't need one
@MCCMCKnyte7 жыл бұрын
@Lyubomir Ikonomov: Agreed. The biggest and most important difference as far as rendering scenes go between Quadro and GeForce is thus: Let's say you have a massively complex 3D model that you are rendering. It's going to take 20 hours to complete. If the GeForce encounters any errors while rendering, it will fail and you will have to start over, losing many hours of productivity time. Now, render the same thing with the Quadro. If there are any errors, the Quadro's ECC will detect and correct them on the fly, insuring that your render will always work. And, if you are rendering 3D models of this magnitude, losing 20 hours of work would be far more costly than the $5K sticker price of the M6000.

If just ECC alone can help prevent even half the potential crashes and errors that occur in normal production conditions, that would more that make up for the cost of such a card. Not that I work in "high end", but even at my level, a little crash here, random loss of data there can add up to a significant number of wasted man hours. And I can imagine with a company like Pixar burning that cash money a mile a minute on a several year project, a Quadro ain't such a "senseless" investment.

This happens in every industry. Its not that its inflated (it very well may be but whatever). Its that they had to pay engineers to design a card and they are only going to sell a very small amount of those cards. The less they sell, the more they have to charge or else they won't make any money.
@ImTheKingOfHyrule8 жыл бұрын
Linus said at the end that the main difference is that the Quadro can hold more RAM than a consumer card, but for gaming that's probably useless because the additional RAM has too much latency for anything other than slow renders that can take hours or even days, like in a movie.
@Wistbacka8 жыл бұрын
But in many cases companies selling workstations to other companies and institutions feed of the lagk of knowledge people have for these kind of things. Last year we needed new computers for the lab, and while we did want a computational computer, we do not do anything that would come close to utilizing a quadro. But I, who was in charge of purchasing the computers, did want a the i7 4790 non-K just to keep the computer future proof. However, the computers for our university is bought from providers; in our case from Dell. The funny thing was, that for ready made packages with an i7 they only offered quadros (I believe it was an old M400) that cost like 300 - 400 € extra. I told them "No! we do not need a quadro. what can you offer us instead?" And the next step was "Radeon R7 250" ... ... Riight.... But that's how it is. The same thing goes for the behemoth computers that is provided along with high end fluorescence and confocal microscopes. Our newest microscope has a computer with a 10 core xeon processor (might have been 8 core, but that's beside the point), which is bonkers. Sure, for super long imaging processes it MIGHT be a need, but RAM and storage is much more of a bottle neck, not to mention the hardware in the microscope and the software. Saving an image after aquiring it takes forever. I checked task manager in hope to see some massive computational stuff going on due to the complexity of the picture and the technology behind how the pics are made on a code level; NO! CPU usage was at 2(!) percent. All the lag seems to be a result of badly optimized software (because there is a 1 TB SSD). My point is; not ALL who buy xeons or quadros have enough money to spend on it. In many cases buyers get fooled into getting over expensive stuff like this because "it is the pro way to go", but the money could have gone into paying other, much more essential parts of the work or project.

And yet, when you think about it, for big companies that use these, 5.000$ is peanuts :P even if they buy 10 of them.

@tjeulink8 жыл бұрын
vpassanisi he pushes directly against nvidia pr who would love to make everyone believe that the quadro is a must have for video editing. think for once in your life. "Artists, animators, and editors can now work in real-time on their most complex projects with multiple layers and advanced effects. Plus, product designers and engineers don’t have to compromise on model complexity or image quality when working on large assemblies; they can now integrate interactive, physically based rendering and simulation to evaluate product design and functionality in entirely new ways. " images.nvidia.com/content/pdf/quadro/data-sheets/NV-DS-Quadro-M6000-24GB-US-NV-fnl-HR.pdf he literally debunked most of this, the plus they put on there like an extra but it really is the main purpose of this card. he roasted the quadro marketing whether you like it or not.
@vpassanisi8 жыл бұрын
tjeulink THAT IS EXACTLY MY POINT!! you are so dense. Nvidia isnt trying to sell quadro cards to LTTs target audience, they want to sell Titan Xs to Linus' target audience. Well, I get the ridiculous price to pay when comparing to consumer products, but you can say the same about Xeon vs i7 as well. A CAD/CAM professional would never use consumer products over Xeon, ECC RAM and a Quadro with ECC RAM. The reason being stability. Lost time in rendering is hundreds of dollars of value each time. An alternative is using Quadro with VMware View, and 3D content on thin clients. I know this is a funny take on it, but honestly the quadro has its place in the market - where it cannot fail. You demonstrated it with the overload protection, servers have redundant power supplies to have higher uptime. ECC makes for the same difference in errors that can occur while processing.

I'm a 3D artist, and yes, this makes all the sense in the world. The limit for 3D rendering in 3D software with GPU (say Blender, 3Ds Max, Maya...) is on the memory, so if you're working on a big scene with a lot of polygons, assets, textures... and this scene takes more memory than your card can hold, you're restricted to render it in CPU using your RAM memory, which is WAY slower. I own a GTX980 and I've made some scenes that I had to render in pieces and then compose them because the whole scene dind't fit in my GPU memory :P This doesn't happen in a game because game assets are super optimized for real-time rendering, but if you're working in VFX for a film, animation film, or an info-architecture visualization... where realism is important, it's a different story. That scene for Octane that Linus is testing, for example... come on, it's a f*cking lamp with a photo behind the window :P But what if you had to render a street with all the buildings, cars, trees, and people walking for a movie or a realistic shot for a client? It would turn black because there's not enough memory in a Titan X :P Great video, though, it's been nice to see this comparison.
@stonent4 жыл бұрын
The extra RAM is a giant storage bin for textures. In a game, you only need the textures you're going to use in that frame. If you're doing Pixar-like stuff, you can pack in all the textures that will be in the render queue in the card for the whole thing start to finish. Plus you're rendering at a much higher resolution than you'd likely game at.

What LINUS is trying to say is this, it is Nvidia's fault that movie ticket prices are so expensive.. This is the reason why 3d Blu Rays cost a small fortune... They take a 1,000 video card, load it up with $500 (if that) of vram, and sell it for $5,000... Nvidia knows that companies (like Pixar) will need this extra Vram, so they can charge as much as they want and Pixar will pay for it because Pixar NEEDS it... Nvidia didn't want to send you a card Linus because if it gets out that a TitanX or GTX980TI, can render just as fast but without the Vram companies might find new ways to make these movies using TitanX's or 980TI's...Maybe doing smaller sections of the film things like that.. The time it takes to render is basically the same on all these cards, so do smaller sections at a time and connect them all at the end... I dunno I'm not into any of that kind of stuff so maybe I'm way off the mark..

+Andrew Russell do I need to look it up or could you just tell us the difference? Also what is advantages of ECC memory? When doing real world testing vs a card without ECC the results are equal or favoring the card without ECC. Is this similar to when the government spends $100 for a toilet plunger? The $10 one is the same thing and dies the job just as good (if not better), but the $100 plunger has a plastic handle and rubber hand grip..... You know, all show, no go....
@andrewskaterrr8 жыл бұрын
John Kluk Do you know what ECC stands for or what it even does??? Clearly not, because if you did then we wouldn't be having this discussion. By nature ECC IS slower since it runs a parity check and resends the data that is incorrect. For gaming this doesn't matter, but for any professional setting where you don't want errors in your media, then ECC is a must, and you'll be using it in a system with ECC Ram. This is the same reason they use ECC in servers and NASes. You don't want bit rot or errors to occur when you're rendering. Imaging Pixar building their render farm with non ECC cards, and they deploy their movie to render. A couple days later it's done (idk how long it takes) and there's artifacts, dropped frames, or miss colored parts. Do you think they'd be very happy? You also pay for reliability, generally 24/7 use, unlike gaming gpus. There were so many people using manufacture warranties on their bitcoin mining gpus that. The cards were running 24/7 and dying due to the high heat. Sapphire had to change their return policy. When you get into the professional world, products cost more but they are also held to a higher standard. I'm in the networking field and when you see massive routers that cost $1 million you're like WTF, but their guaranteed yearly down time is .0001%. Or even more smaller Cisco routers compared to normal home routers, they start around $300 for small business ones. It's easy to just say "wow this cost way too much and there's no point" when you don't actually know what all goes into it. I spent $140 on used ebay 32GB (4x8GB) ECC DDR3 ram for my FreeNAS box (cheapest on Newegg is $160 and my mobo required specific models in the $250+ range), compare that to non-ECC which is $125. Now that is DDR3 and not GDDR5 so it's a little different but you get the idea.

There's a reason for that. To take up less resources, be responsive, and to open up faster.

it costs 5k because its targeted towards big business that dont give a fuck about 5k so theres a bit of markup
@0000x0000referenced8 жыл бұрын
this precisely 5k is nothing to the backers of the human genome project that's not even a tenth of the total cost
@CosmicFuzzFM8 жыл бұрын
I don't get it, big business or not everybody has a budget. I still don't see why they'd spend more for something that functions about the same as 3 titans
@dellmegas8 жыл бұрын
if you have a huge budget like a business would its just more efficient just to buy this, the price to performance ratio dose not really matter
@stealth30028 жыл бұрын
Fuzz FM well, I have the same feeling about iPhone users
@xTwilightWolvesx8 жыл бұрын
Honestly I think they'd rather spend the money on some titans and use leftover money for their private lives than spend the money on a graphics card like this.
@SchioAlves8 жыл бұрын
The comparison is quite unfair, because you switched on the ECC protection (which costs performance)
@CosmicFuzzFM8 жыл бұрын
that explains a lot. I was sitting here scratching my head thinking "how the fuck is this possible?" Linus needs to stop recording videos before WAN show, he always seems so rushed.
@tompoole21327 жыл бұрын
He also failed to mention that ECC is also a reason to purchase one, if that's what you're into.
@MikeDolanFliss8 жыл бұрын
He waves that card around so much that it's hard to believe he believes it's worth $5000.
