FWIW, many teams put the libero at the left back defensively to dig the other team's outsides and put the back row outside in the middle back to allow them easier hitting lanes for back row sets.

I often place my Libero left back to defend the outside hitter's - Some will play them in the middle but I prefer to have "Pipe" as a back row attack option... \m/

There is a mistake in rotation 4 serve receive. Usually you let the OH2 from that rotation receive where you placed the OH1 and push the OH1 to where the libero is on position 6 and the libero to where your OPH is in position 1. You then "hide" your OPH in the bottom right side corner of the court. That way you dont get that awkward left side stack in the front row, you already have OH1 in the correct position for a pipe attack from the back row etc.

I wouldn´t call it a mistake, I guess its just another option tu receive. With the rotation that its shown in the video, you do hide the OPP in the bottom right corner, and at the same time, gives the option to the OH2 for a faster preparation to attack in zone 4.

Depends what rotation 2,3 and 4 I think that OH1 would be in zone 6 and in rotation 1,5 and 6 would be in zone 4

Most teams have S @ 1, OH-2, MB-3, Opp-4, OH-5, MB-6. In a 5-1 Opposite means the player opposite the setter who is not a hitter.

Only in the USA, which they made volleyball more complex! Ahahaha 😂😂😂 No wonder they only won 1 gold medal in women's volleyball in the Olympics because of their crazy volleyball rule in NCAA! 😂😂😂, but internationally, libero is not allowed to serve!

It depends on your level of play and the number of quality setters you have. Higher levels are almost exclusively 5-1. Lower levels might want to develop two setters, so they could run a 6-2. Beginners can run a 4-2 so the setter doesn't have to run around so much.

Why should the libero be positioned at zone 6 when he is behind the block. Hardest expected hit is on position 5, that why you have to put your libero there. Also this leaves space for outsidehitter to hit from behind in the middle.

noob question, why do rightside hitter and oh1 start in those positions if they are going to swap anyway?

Well a lot of higher level teams do not actually switch and the outside will hit right side for one rotation and right side will stay on the outside. The reason they are there is because outside hitters focus on passing while it’s not an emphasis for right side hitters as they are more focused on attacking and blocking

Am I misunderstanding something or does the "base position" formation seem to change when setter is in front row? Originally setter covers zone 1 but by rotation 4, oppo now covers zone 1 instead?

rotation 4 setter is in the front row, so they go block the right side. Oppo is in the back row so can’t block, so they cover back right

its hard to grasp these concepts when it seems pointless. why not just have everyone go around in a circle and rotate that way?

They are going around in a circle, it is only the Libero that gets confusing because they cannot go to the front at all times. It is possible to just replace Libero with MB2 and they can just rotate in a circle infinitely. But this means both your MBs need to be able to receive well AND attack well, which is very impossible to achieve at high levels, since one requires you to be short to dive easier and the other requires you to be tall to attack/block over the net.

The purpose for these specific set ups is to kind of divide up specific skills so positions are more specialized. For example, with this rotation only the outside hitters and the libero will ever have to pass which means right side, middle and setter are allowed to be weaker in passing and focus more on the other skills.

Libero can serve for one player in the original rotation. Once established, they must serve in that position only throughout a set. The original player can still serve in their position later if the coach chooses, but the libero cannot serve in another position until the next set.
