5.1K Footage Testing - DJI Mavic 3

These are my first 3 days using the DJI Mavic 3 for recreational flights. The majority of the footage is shot with the normal color profile, but you'll see certain shots have "D-Log + Rec.709 LUT" in the bottom right corner. Those are clips shot in D-Log color profile, and then graded with DJI's official Rec.709 LUT.

Good question. It never really occurred to me since I don't use that second camera very often. But I do often shoot in F4 or F4.5 with the main camera to preserve sharpness and cut out any depth of field focus issues, so that makes it very similar to the tele lens.

Great stuff man. I was wondering. If you are dropping this 5.1k footage into a 16:9 timeline do you need to expand/crop the footage to get rid of the black bars at the top and bottom? Thanks man

Thanks! Yes you need to scale up or down the footage to fill up the screen and/or prevent the footage from being cut off. I kept it native 5.1k so that you can see the shape of the framing coming out of the drone.

How did you get so smooth 5.1 K 50 footage? Did you calibrate the UMI or smth? What settings did you use for these videos? When I shoot 5.1k 50 I get some kind of "shaky" footage. Only 4K 60 is ok.

Hi, this is 5.1k 30fps, not 50fps. If you're watching on a 60hz screen, 30 and 60 will look better than 50.

How is it most consumer cameras nowadays, with a few exceptions, are around 4k@25fps and they are being 'out-specced' by drones @ 5.1k, 8k etc?

That's pretty much all it is...just specs. You need to get the footage on the computer and really see if it looks as good. It's pretty easy to have a camera shoot in 4k resolution without it actually being much "clearer" than regular HD. More pixels mean nothing if the detail contained in them isn't there. Some expensive pro HD cameras look better than a cheap 4k camera. 4k is unfortunately a great marketing term. So in that case, there are some 4k drones that look like crap too. I recall reviewing a Wingsland S6 drone that shot in 4k but looked absolutely horrible. Or the C-Fly Faith 2, same story. However with newer prosumer+ drones in the last year or two, we really are seeing good quality 5k, 6k, etc. Those definitely aren't going to be the budget beginner drones however. The Mavic 3 wouldn't be considered a budget drone, and neither would the Autel Evo II Pro 6k (which has better video than their 8k model in my opinion). But I'll say that any video camera produced in the last couple years really needs to be at least 4k 60fps to be relevant, and even higher to be competitive. Heck, my cellphone even does 4k 60fps. I think GoPro is a good indicator of what the hot new resolution is that most other consumer cameras try to follow. GoPro began shooting 5k with the Hero9 last year, and 5.3k with the Hero10 this year. You can see the entire market try to follow their lead. Soon we'll probably see 5k on a sub-$1000 drone from DJI, but the Mavic 3's 5k will still win out because of its high dynamic range, high bitrate, bit depth, etc. Just watch out for all of the cheap budget 5k drones that will come out soon after that look no better than their crappy 4k older brothers.

@@EdRickerVlogs Thanks, so not all 4Ks are equal, it seems you are saying. I guess the other thing to consider is that after KZbin gets its hands on a video and reprocesses it, it tends to level out a lot of footage from low and high end cameras, making it harder to distinguish between them.

I’ll stick with my Mavic 2 Pro for these reasons, I can only see a slight better detail in them, not worth the major bump on price imo

A downside to KZbin's compression is that leaves on trees look horrible on KZbin. The more fine detail, the worse it gets. Some shots to better analyze would be the city shots where more solid textures are present.

Depends on distance from the viewing device. You would generally have to sit closer to a display to appreciate the finer detail of higher resolution. If you're 6' away from a large display, you probably wouldn't notice a different between 4k or 8k.
