15 years of hunting all game (no bear) in West Virginia here. .22 magnum from the Marlin rifle was absolutely the bomb. But I have bought a Ruger 57×28 pistol and it does great. Have to lean toward the .22 mag due to price and availability. Thanks for the great video!

.22 mag is way better than people think it would do, but that necked, centerfire round will win a straight up comparison. With .22 mag being so much more established, with wider arm selection, and lower price, I know what I would pick. Thanks for the test.

TOOLS! Thanks for the video, quality as usual. I'm not all that interested in the 5.7 at the moment, but still, when I get some time I'll have to scrub through your work and maybe KZbin in general and see if anyone makes a bullet that holds up better. 16+ inches consistently with a more modest expansion and no fragmentation would be intriguing! Thanks Tools!

I was using the FN SS197SR round until I saw your 5.7 Critical Defense tests. I just got in a couple of boxes of CD 5.7 today and will take it out on Tuesday to zero the red dot with it on my M&P 5.7 pistol. I personally love the caliber because it's accurate, has light recoil, and the mag holds over 20 rounds but in a relatively short grip. As such and because it's very thin, the M&P 5.7 is actually very concealable and comfortable for me to conceal carry in the 3 or 4 o'clock position. Also, while the FBI states that hydrostatic type tissue damage happens consistently after 2200 FPS, that is for ALL types of tissue. If you look at studies of bullet wounds in hospital ER's, you often see velocity based damage in estimated velocities as low as 1600 FPS. It's one reason (along with energy transfer) why .22 magnum (out of a rifle) has a good reputation as a varmint round on animals as big as a coyote. BTW there is also at least one hog hunting round video on YT that shows a dude hog hunting with a FN 5.7 pistol. Personally I thought it was a bit cruel, but it did drop some big hogs with single shots and thus gives a good idea of what it would do to any home intruder or attacker.
@timrobinson6573
@timrobinson6573 7 сағат бұрын
Your not getting hydrostatic shock from 5.7 at any velocity. The 1,600 fps you're referencing is from rounds like 44 mag, 357 mag. And it's not hydrostatic shock, it's simple energy transfer. This effect at lower velocity is even observed with 12 gauge buckshot at velocities lower than 1,600 fps. But it's not hydrostatic shock. It's an object with a lot of mass and velocity transfering energy to a target. It's like getting punched by an average guy vs getting punched by Mike Tyson. Mike Tyson's blow has more effect bc his punch transfer more energy. It has nothing to do with hydrostatic shock. You're reading about these things, not fully understanding them and then extrapolating them into made up scientific sounding concepts.

So basically, we are talking a center fire "reboot" of the old 5mm Remington Rimfire Magnum that was supposed to make the .22 Magnum obsolete. As I recall that did not work out well for Remington. To this day I have not seen or handled a single box of 5.7x28 ammo or firearm so chambered. However, I can go to my local leftist, liberal, socialist, communist Big Box store and buy all the .22 Magnum ammo I could ever hope to need or utilize. As always, I enjoyed your video and hope that you will continue to produce the quality videos you are known for.

Ive been carrying the 5.7 in my rock since i saw it on store shelves a few weeks back. I think it was $27-28/box. I carry underwood xd +p in my 9mm and .380, and they are the same or more $/rd. I had a lh sidecar made for the rock, and im carrying 47rds with a reload. Its my "away from home" rig, when im not just running around the local area close to home. Since you asked- imo the 5.7 is an excellent hunting cartridge as well. Ive harvested 2 rabbits with ss197, and the performace was perfect. Instant kill, and little meat damage. Im considering getting the ruger carbine, aside from what should be a great home defense gun specificaly for my wife, it should serve well as a medium range, medium varmint platform if the accuracy is adequate(ive heard it is). To varminters, it is a modern version of the venerable and beloved .22 hornet, which is approaching a century of factory production.

Poking holes....I reckon these would do that. But not my choice with either. But it is better than nothing. Thank you.

How would it do in a rifle? For varmets. I wouldn't use it for anything else.

I'm sure it's hard to get one bullet to perform good across an expected range variance of ~800 fps. It would be nice if they had a lighter weight bullet specifically for handguns, I'm sure that 22 mag in a rifle would probably come close to fragmenting. Kinda like how they do for 38 spl pink inserts vs the 38 spl +p
@ToolsandTargets
@ToolsandTargets 19 сағат бұрын
Yeah, it would probably be a mess from a 24".

I was hoping for rifles. I like the .22 mag in these. The 5.7 is just too pricey for me to consider. Nice test. Thanks.

Only problem doing 5.7 vs .22 mag rifle is it limits me to 16" on the .22 since the 5.7 is 16". I have a 22" Ruger .22 mag that would really wake some rounds up.

Maybe it's better than rimfire, but I'd never choose 5.7 over 9mm or any other normal hand gun cartridges.

Any chance you'd test the seismic 185gr jhp 9mm? Its a subsonic suppressor type load that they claim will expand. It's kinda pricey but if it actually expands and is subsonic with that bullet weight it would have plenty of applications

Surprised the 5.7 didn’t show more effectiveness with the additional velocity. Doesn’t seem to be that superior to the .22mag.

Well now this was a interesting video and a very interesting comparison. I knew for sure that 22 Magnum didn't have a chance against a 5.7x28. however, I don't care. I'd still take the 22 Magnum. I have never personally been a big fan of the 5.7x28 cartridge and I don't own anything that shoots at caliber.

With that 22 magnum your extreme spread was because you had one freakishly high velocity, and one freakishly low... if you average the other three you get 1311 with an extreme spread of 20.

Let the smack talk begin….. 😂. I think the 5.7 did pretty good. I’m just not a fan of it. The .22 mag just doesn’t have the umph from a short barrel imho. Still great info and test my friend 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸

The 5.7 x28 is more like a semi-auto .22 Hornet . The 22 Mag don't even come close . I would like you campair 16" Barreled .22 Hornet with 16" Barreled 5.7x28 .I would have liked this test done with rifles.
