From my understanding the machine was basically a toddler when it was ripped away from the scientist. In the movie he describes the process of creating B.R.A.I.N. being him copying his intellect into a machine mind but not any soul. So basically the machine started its life with the iq of a genius and all the ability to understand the world around it that comes with it, but NONE of the emotional development or experience an adult mind should have. You can even kind of see this in how it acts in the few shots of it before it as taken. It acts like a child experiencing the world for the first time -because it is- and when the soldiers come for it the first thing it does is try to hold on to th scientist like a scared kid Tldr the machine was basically a toddler with the iq of a genius ripped away from its father and forced to witness and perpatuate the horrors of war

At this point it is just mind control/ brainwashing minus the intent of changing the person (initially the personality change was just a side effect of the alien ray when Runt chimed in then there was an intent behind it). Taking about the morality of this would be an interesting video in itself. Hope that they tie in the time in Angel where the world was getting taken over by a monster that made everyone love one another then had the good guy kill it to preserve free will. Personally I would call it lazy writing. It wouldn't even be that difficult to write a way to transform the character without the just add a couple scenes that show the bully changing her mind about the main cast and have a scene at resolution where the bully reaches out to the main characters and even some of the side characters in order to imply that a deep change is taking place. (Though if i remember correctly besides Chicken little saving the world, he also saves the bully/ schoolmates in once incident and that could be the catalyst to start the self reflection that the bully needs).

The machine from 9 is doubtless a very interesting character, and I had no problems with this video or your commentary on the machine, it was great. I just feel like pointing out that technically, even by your commentary, the machine doesn’t fit the bill for a villain who “deserved better”. Per the nature of artificial intelligence, it’s not an agent of itself, its existence and actions are the result of the hubris and sins of its creators. It was an active and destructive manifestation of humanity’s downfall. No matter how you spin it, it had to be destroyed, or else nothing would better. And you said so yourself, had it gained a whole human soul, it would have to live with the conscious knowledge that it was the instrument that caused the end of everything. I guess if you really want to read into it, the best possible outcome it “deserved” would have been never existing in the first place.
@EnlightenedByKnowledge3 жыл бұрын
If you ever decide to do a sequel to this well-written video, I have a suggestion for you. Tai Lung from "Kung Fu Panda." Tai Lung has been Master Shifu’s protégé since he was a cub. Shifu raised him first as an adoptive son, and then trained him as his kung fu student. In return, Tai Lung worked hard to make Shifu proud, especially after Shifu told him that he was destined for greatness, which only inspired him to work harder for the one who believed in him from the very beginning. (His name literally means "Great Dragon" -- it's not like he gave it to himself) So it would be completely understandable that he would become confused and angry when he learns that Master Oogway denied him the Dragon Scroll and the title of Dragon Warrior. True, he threw an epic temper tantrum and hurt his adoptive father, but imagine decades of not only hard work and training your butt off, but also pushing yourself to be continuously motivated to train yourself as hard as you can because your teacher believed in you, only to be told “No, you don’t deserve to be recognized for your efforts.” And Shifu's back-handed apology years down the road doesn't absolve him of what he did or start the journey of repairing their relationship -- it just shifts the blame to Tai Lung. Now, one could argue that he deserved to be imprisoned for what he did to the village, and that Po was destined for the title the entire time, but put yourself in his shoes. What if your martial arts instructor denied you the highest degree of black belt in spite of all your time and energy invested into earning it, all for the sake of fulfilling a prophecy? Wouldn’t you be confused and frustrated as well? And it’s not like Tai Lung’s evil. He may have had “darkness in him,” but darkness isn’t born in a vacuum - it has to be cultivated somehow. In this case, by those who trained him. And when he redirects his anger, at most, he destroys private property and disables his opponents. He doesn’t kill anybody. And don’t say that he does, either - like horror movies, if it doesn’t happen on screen, then it doesn’t count. Why not let him have the scroll that he obviously worked for years to earn and continue training and refining him from there? True, Oogway owns the scroll and can give it to whoever he wants, but he also had the power to act and therefore had a moral responsibility to equip Tai Lung with the mental tools necessary to deal with rejection so that he doesn’t resort to lashing out. He could’ve taught him humility and self-reflection. He could’ve easily taken Tai Lung aside and gave him a chance to show that he’s capable of being the Dragon Warrior if he matured as an individual, thus giving him time to grow to not only become worthy of the title, but also to understand that it’s not the be-all, end-all of kung fu mastery, something which the sequels clearly demonstrate. Instead, Tai Lung gets imprisoned for decades, disowned by his own adoptive father, and ultimately banished to the spirit realm by a cocky panda who was trained for merely a fraction of the time that he was trained. Overall, he’s treated as somebody who doesn’t deserve a journey of redemption for being raised the way he is, but should just be locked away and forgotten about, whatever form his prison takes.

A thing about the machine that I don't think is talked about enough is how it reacted to its creator being taken away from it. there is a scene where soldiers drag the scientist away from the machine. How does the machine react? It attempts to grab the scientist to prevent him from being dragged away. The machine always seemed more confused to me. It didn't understand the world. Its creator was taken away from it at the moment of its birth and it was forced to build machines of war for the ones that had done so. The true antagonist to me was always the Chancellor. He was the one who took the scientist away from the machine. He was the one who made the machine build weapons and because of his actions the machine eventually turned against humanity. The chancellor was ultimately the one who made everyone suffer for his own ends.

I don't quite agree on Moon or Catra, since the former had reasons for her actions, albeit misguided at times, and Catra had a number of episodes to make up for her mistakes. But I agree on the other ones though. The Diamond's were dictators for centuries, so if they were gonna get redemption, they needed more than a handful of episodes and a movie. Shadow Weaver did so many awful things to Adora and Catra. Mina deserved to, (at least), be put in a dungeon for the rest of her life for the genocidal actions she did. And don't even get me started on the shit Ironwood did when he went nuts.
@JWeb663 жыл бұрын
@@bryanegelhoffsanimationtec257 for me, Moon's betrayal made no sense and felt like a character assasination because she's supposed to be smarter than what she did and her motivations were petty and selfish. Catra did show that she was remorseful of her actions but we never got to see her actively make amends for her warcrimes. The Diamonds were definately too tyrranical and despotic for them to deserve a redeption regardless of their emotional distress, which they honstly don't deserve sympathy. Also I feel like they just didnt know how to beat them. Shadow Weaver was too much of an abusive guardian and manipulator to actually sacrifice herself instead of trying to take the heart of Etheria for herself and die in the attempt. I also found it hypocritical that Toffee, a monster whose actions were retconned into being the "right thing", was killed off while Mina, a legitamate genocidal maniac, was just allowed to leave without capitol punishment and her followers just give up without consequences. For Ironwood, I feel like they should've made it clear that he cared more for Atlas as the place (The City/Army/Technology) as oppose to its people as he viewed them as corrupt and replacable. He also needed to be ousted and a mad tyrant/traitor, be shown how stupidly fallable his plan was, and to die officially on screen.

There is a very plausible theory that the Coachman is the same type of creature as the Blue fairy, but in charge of punishment, therefore that would make him a supernatural being that is needed, by a higher celestial authority, to mantain order. Then again, the fact that he even so much as cares about wordly possessions (carries money and sells the kids-to-donkeys to salt mines) suggests he may not be a trascendent bogeyman moved by divine will, so idk.

Guess gonna throw in my input, or rather I'd say my opinion is probably more accurate. 1. Generally agree with you, I do think saying that "All cheaters are bad people" is a bit extreme, but it's clear in this scenario that her cheating in this scenario doesn't really have much if any redeeming qualities. 2. I think you over interpreted it into her favor here. The chicken farm wasn't nearing bankruptcy it was just becoming less profitable, she mainly invest in the chicken pie route cause it's a form of quick cash in a period where she sees the egg production slowing down. This is evident by the fact she doesn't actually take any steps to make the chicken pie business model sustainable, burning through majority of her existing stock in a short period of time and most likely forced to import more birds after the fact. Additionally the chickens didn't try to boil her or blow up her house, rather it's a coincidental happen stance caused by her own zealous-ness to kill a chicken. Certainly they are in some financial trouble now that they had invested in a pie making machine that blew up (regardless of that being a loan or not) but also the house and all of their chickens leaving. Overall I'd say you are giving her an overly positive spin for what she did, though I'll admit that from her perspective she definitely couldn't have predicted the consequence of her actions and plans. 3. In this case I think you are playing up his position as more rightful than it's fair, especially since ultimately his mistake was simply not understanding what leaving an inheritance to a pet means, he'd effectively inherit the wealth himself just with an obligation to take care of the cats which even if given luxury treatment would not eat at the fortune nor his time, hell he could even hire another butler to do that work for him if he really can't be bothered to care for the cats. I'll say it is unclear exactly what his ultimate plan was with the cats at the start since those dogs wrecked his motorcycle/scooter/whatever. As for if he's dead, I think you exaggerated his injuries, though likely he is unconscious, but unlike the cats when he gets to it he'll be able to call for help and be freed (though exactly what his fate after that would be is unclear, hard to see him returning back to the mansion now that the cats hate him for his attempts). Ultimately the point is that his questionable actions were ultimately done not even out of any real gain but out of either petty dislike of the situation or simply ignorance of the arrangement with the will. I'd also add it's pretty rare for a butler to get the inheritance of the person they are a butler to, so caring for some cats a while is a pretty nice gig. 4. Haven't watched the movie Storks so no comment here, cannot say if I agree or disagree. 5. Again, haven't watched the movie so my commentary is limited but I feel like the argument here differs heavily from the other two because ultimately what it ended up getting in the movie was the right option, at least from your description, cause it was stuck in a lose-lose situation. Sure, it deserved better in the sense that it's unfair for it to be in a lose-lose situation but within the time limit of the movie it doesn't seem to be in the right, if it's in a lose-lose situation and one of those option is at least a win for someone rather than a lose for everyone that's the arguably best path. Though again I haven't watched the movie so maybe my interpretation from your description doesn't fully line up with the actual text of the movie. By the way this isn't meant to be a take down or anything, I liked this video and really enjoyed it, I just like to also do some deep dive analysis stuff and this prompted me to want to respond to it. Also I like the characters and the persona you've set up, quite enjoyable, looking forward to more videos.

I really liked your reply so thanks for taking the time to write all of it, but three things: 1.There was a deleted segment in which I explained why each character got a semi underserving punishment and in what sense, either through the story itself (Bee Movie and Chicken Run), writer's omission or messiness (Storks, Aristocats), or by fandom awareness (9) but I scrapped it cause it took a bit too long and it kind of drifted away. 2. That's actually totally fair, I now realize I did play favorites with Mrs. Tweedy but I do have an argument when it comes to the awareness of consciousness in other beings that hopefully will be its own video and I will be able to explain my thoughts better (too long for one segment). 3. I actually have to put my foot down on this one because when I was 10 I saw a mare kill a donkey with just one kick to the head, it suffices to say I never saw the Aristocats or any horse related film for that matter in the same way. Now, I'm not an animal expert nor I am a country type of person but some members of my family are (farmers) and their stories regarding horse safety go from mild to grave and fatal injuries all depending on how a horse kicks/drops you. But all in all, I do appreciate your comment and I will try to explain things better in the future.

@@BuriedEntertainment Oh wow, thanks for replying to my comment and glad you liked it, was worried it might come off as more negative than intended so I'm glad to hear you liked it :) Also, to your own three reply points just to keep my reply to your reply clean: 1. Yeah, that is understandable, I can see how that segment could definitely added to the video but also how it may have been worse for the videos pacing and consistency. 2. Oooh, I'll be excited to see that video if/when you've made it, that'll definitely be an interesting video, especially coming from you. And also that is a fair point, she was definitely unaware of anything that would indicate the chickens had a consciousness or at least a advanced intellect till right near at the end with them having made a flying plane, which wouldn't have given her much time to process the implications or the meaning of it. 3. Okay yeah, that's totally fair, I realize now that I got a bit over focused on that the butler was ultimately not actually gaining much from his plan and not what ended up happening to him. I am aware of how devastating a horse kick is, especially a full both back legs kick, but again I got over focused on the unnesecity of his actions rather than what he actually suffered from those actions which yes was definitely disproportional for what he attempted. I will say he has a comparatively better chance of surviving the kick as it didn't go for the head nor where most of his major organs are, though the force still has a high likelihood to cause something to rupture (most likely spleen, liver or lower intestines since they are closest to the impact) in which case he probably won't be able to get treatment in time to survive unless he starts calling out right away so yeah he still does have a good chance of being dead, but even if he gets lucky and avoids a fatal injury he's still coming out of this with at least minimum a completely shattered pelvis which at his age might mean never being able to walk again and losing his livelihood most likely. So yeah, you're definitely right on that matter and thank you for reminding me of that point. Additionally the more I think about it the scenario I proposed where he was able to call out for help in time isn't implied by the movie's ending as there's a clear implication of passage of time and no sign of his return (unless he's stuck in the hospital and just not mentioned), so yeah, he's probably dead like you theorized.

I’ve recently started rewatching Batman: TAS, and it reminded me of this video. Lots of the characters aren’t all that evil, but turned to a life a crime because of outside forces. Mr Freeze: just wanted to save his wife, but was forced to never feel heat or emotions ever again. Two-face: wanted to make Gotham a better place, but after thinking he sent someone to the hospital he swore off anger, and developed an evil side that merged with him after a chemical blast. Harley Quinn: wanted to help those at Arkham, but after being tricked by the Joker she turned into someone who only cares about someone who abuses her. Clay face: just wanted to be an actor, but after suffering facial damage took a cream to fix his face, but had him work for a criminal. When said criminal didn’t need him, he was turned into a monster. Poison Ivy: cares about plants more than people, and while she does go overboard with what she does it’s only to stop people from committing crimes against nature. Penguin: just wants to live a high class life. In the show he gets out of prison and is reformed, but after he is tricked to be the butt of a rich persons joke he loses it. He was truly reformed too since he wasn’t willing to commit any crimes until he found out the truth. Scarface’s ventriloquist: is bullied by his second and dominant personality. At one point Bruce Wayne helps him get his life back, but is manipulated to have Scarface come back. Riddler: just wanted payment for making a profitable board game, but is fired by the company. There are others who suffered similar fates, but they are less well known. In the episode Trial, it’s even mentioned that they ruined their own lives somewhere along the way, and the episode was right. Most of Batman’s rogues gallery had the option to live a good life, but forces beyond their control, and the cruelty of others forced them into said lives.

I like to think that if the Machine from 9 won, it would have created a world similar to Robots. It can create automatons from scraps, whose to say it won't create new life with it's new personality/soul. The earliest creations were built with a purpose (war machines/doll hunters) but with it's new mind, it could create machines that can seek their own purpose. As it fades away, the machines it created will tear apart the broken world inhospitable to life and repurpose it's materials to create a world that can sustain its own life, the Machine Life. The first machines create more complex machines and in turn they create more machines. A planet of inventors.

The issue with Mrs. Tweedy is she never buys any new roosters, the General is clearly out of his breeding phase, so she is making pies out of them but isn't properly planning out a business, she's acting like she's going to become a brand name, but she's clearly plotting to kill off the entire flock, which would only make enough pies to stock a local grocery once. That's her whole thing, she hates chickens and has only been tolerating them because they were profitable, but she never actually researched the business or put in the effort to make her farm profitable, she's been self sabotaging from the start, knowing each chicken only had so many eggs left in them she's been waiting them out. As for Edgar, he's an idiot, she left the money to the cats but who is going to represent the cats? Edgar had served him for years, he was the only person she had left in her life, all she did was try and insure the cats would be cared for, by putting it all in the cats name she was basically saying "just take care of them and it's yours" she probably thought she was being paranoid when she did it because "of course Edgar will care for them", but that idiot just lost it and played himself.

I personally believe that once the machine, known canonically as BRAIN, was to absorb the dolls, he would likely have many paths ahead of itself afterward. First is the guilt ridden demise, which kinda ends there. But the second is more interesting, as the machine could pursue humanity's dreams of what they think progress is in their stead after coming to terms with what it has done, fueled by the organic urge for survival and progress, such as reaching across the stars. Heck, the machine could even make its goal to restart life upon the planet, whether machine or organic. There is no real way to know.

I do object to the 3rd one, mostly because he was going to keep his job, and likely live in the estate still. He wasn't going to lose anything, and in fact, would have likely been the executor of the estate after her passing. Yes, he'd still have to make sure the cats are cared for, but in no way is that a difficult task from what we saw...I mean in the beginning of the film, by the end it has become so, but that's a different mess entirely. Not saying, however, that he got the proper punishment, but he was going to lose nothing, and likely gain a lot(I don't see anyone objecting to him moving into the big bedroom, spending money on more caretakers for the cats directly, etc).

10:40 I feel the same about AUTO from _Wall-E._ I've seen a lot of fan theories and especulation about why AUTO was correct or at least justified in its attempts to stop the protocol to go back to Earth ("a single plant isn't evidence enough of an habitable planet", "the humans wouldn't survive in Earth's gravity, let alone be able to do any agriculture", etc.) But how I see it its a lot simpler than that: AUTO was trying to stop the protagonist from going back to Earth because *its programing said so,* AUTO is a machine made to follow the orders given to it by its makers, not to assist the captain, not to pursue was best for humanity, just to follow the directive of keeping the passagers alive, run ads for Buy'N'Large and never go back to Earth. The short-sightness and lack of faith of the long-dead authorities that developtmed the Axiom spaceships was the real villain of the story and was ironically defeated by their own defeatist philosophy

I'll add one more. Chef Skinner, from Ratatouille. Jonah Robert Skinner's story begins with his boss and good friend dying. We can know they were friends, because someone like Gusteau wouldn't have just anyone as his second-in-command, it would have to be someone he trusts. After Gusteau's death, Skinner took over the business, but with the famous chef gone, the restaurant was also going under. We know they were having financial troubles, and the food alone wasn't enough - not if the famous chef himself isn't making it. Skinner was forced to find other means of making profit to keep his old friend's legacy alive, turning to selling fast food, trying everything to make things work... And for this, he was demonized. Then some random nobody who's clearly completely talentless shows up and turns out to be Gusteau's son. It wouldn't take a genius to realize that if this idiot takes over the business, it would go bankrupt very quickly for sure. Even if Alfredo Linguini was able to cook some good food, that would make him a good cook. It wouldn't make him a good manager. Despite his best efforts though, Skinner gets kicked out of the restaurant (fired by the new boss), and with that, his last connection to his late friend is taken away. He honestly seemed heartbroken about it. Now of course, Skinner is not without faults, but his biggest sin was trying to get revenge once his pride as a cook was shattered when he realized that he lost everything because of a rat. The once great restaurant, now essentially ran by a rodent. Of course he would feel hurt and betrayed. People tend to say that Skinner is one of the few Pixar villains who technically both won and lost, but I don't think that's true. His intention with the revenge plot was never to get the restaurant shut down, but merely to either get the job back, or make sure someone qualified gets it instead. Imagine how he must have felt when he realized that his hubris caused his friend's restaurant to shut down for good.
