👍A few tips to add.. Dont use air pumps/air stones etc - they promote hair algae growth Don't overstock your tank Never add fertilisers Use sand and never gravel to cap your substrate. With sand your water will always be crystal clear. I haven't done a water change in over a year and fish are breeding in most of my tanks. Old water is gold, avoid them unless something crazy is happening. Most tropical fish should be kept around 27C(this is what they're used to in the wild) And agree, load the tank with plants so the whole ecosystem will be happy

Some good rules of thumb in there! Only one I disagree with is the air pump. Well, I don't know really. I've never thought about it encouraging algae to the tank, and my tank does have a weeeeeeee bit of algae, but nothing concerning. I like to have the peace of mind that the dissolved air is circulating well and that my fish aren't suffering from hypoxia, but then my tank is perpetually covered in a layer of duckweed that will smother the water. I think as long as your nutrients are balanced (like you say: no fertilisers!) then I don't think an airstone is so bad. To each his own on that one. 😉 Love a nuanced discussion so thanks for that! ❤️ (I really mean it! I think grey areas are a dying art these days...) Also: the sand! THE SAND! *YES!* What a difference it makes to not have gravel catching and hiding all the yuckiness. Wish I'd known before setting up my tank! The main layer is sand but I've got too much gravel in it for my liking and it does make life harder when it piles up like you can see in the video. Thanks for adding those tips!!

@@TamTalksTanks👍 Yeah, I was obsessed with adding additional air until about a month ago. Not sure if it's a long term solution but so far, everything is doing better, fish and plants are amazing. Anyway, keep up the good work, happy Monday 👍

Oh yes! That's the dream someday! 🥰 For now though, I'm stuck with a hose and a bucket. Somebody suggested clamping the end of my hose onto a garden hose to extend it out into the garden. I will try that someday!

@TamTalksTanks They are not very expensive at all. I attach mine to some vinyl tubing and I can perform water changes very quickly. I got mine for about $25.00 USD from Amazon.

That's fantastic news! Sounds like you're giving them the best possible care! I've got a big soft spot for honey gouramis since having one of my own. They're so clever! After feeding time, Honey (very creatively named!) will follow the panda corydoras and pick up whatever tidbits they throw up into the water column. It's also amazing how much they swim around given the space. I find mine is very shy but will come out when he thinks I'm not filming! 😂 He also loves all the plants. So happy for you and your new recruits. 🥰

Great video, good work on this. Smart Plugs: I have TAPO P100 and on the app you can set up automation: if a plug (for heater and filter) is off for 2hrs > sent notification > wait for 30min > turn on socket... and with them you can set in case of outage the default status to be on (for heater and filter) and off (for lights) if this is what you want :) - worth every penny especially if you get them on sales...

Hey, I’m raising frogs from spawn that was laid this spring in my pond, about half of them have now grown their front legs so I have moved them into an amphibious environment. What sort of plants can I use that would work in this scenario, like types of moss and stuff that’s common in marshes
@TamTalksTanks
@TamTalksTanks 4 ай бұрын
Hello! 👋 Frogs and tadpoles! How exciting! My answer would be: it depends. The tadpoles will still want to feed on vegetation, but you shouldn't use plants in your pond that are not endemic to your local ecosystem if they're likely to spread (surface plants like duckweed and salvinia are known to spread and invade ecosystems easily). When I was growing up and raising tadpoles, I found they really enjoyed eating elodea that I'd scooped up from the local canal (and where I found the tadpoles!). I'd recommend having a look around the waterways of your local area for native plants if you're allowed to harvest them. Laws vary by country so make sure to abide by your local laws. Here in the UK, star moss and other mosses I'm less familiar with are found in abundance. Also ferns like bracken (it grows like wildfire and I don't know of anything that eats it because it's carcinogenic when eaten but I think it's really pretty), wildflowers like forget-me-nots and grasses are also good. I'm a big fan of clover as it provides a lot of cover for small organisms and also attracts pollinators, fixes nitrogen and is just a fantastic plant. Don't forget about bits of wood: even just sticks and twigs, maybe some fallen leaves for some extra cover for the froglets as they emerge. The leaves will also be a hiding spot for their prey, so the frogs will be more likely to stick around and spawn there again when the time comes if they find an abundance of food there. I hope that helps you! Let me know if there's anything else I've not covered and I'll do my best to give you a good answer. 🙂

The KZbin algorithm is deciding to show your video. Ya!! Now my 2 video production tips: You need to step up the production quality a bit to get us to stick around. Pick up a couple video lights (they're cheap now), and an external mic. Good luck!

Hiya! Thanks for your feedback! ❤️ Unfortunately I'm in a circumstance where I've got to work with what I already have (just a smartphone for now!), but I really hope to upgrade my equipment in the future. I'm grateful to everyone who sticks around despite the camera/mic quality to watch and listen to what I have to say. Hoping that quality of substance wins over quality of equipment for now! But as I say, I do intend to improve production quality in time. 🙂 Thanks again!

@@TamTalksTanks I'm not complaining! I'm just a pro video guy offering friendly tips. :) Just point a room light at yourself. It would help a lot to combat the contrast difference between your face, and the tank behind you. And, if possible, just get your phone a bit closer. It would really help with the audio. If you were in the U.S., I'd send you some gear I'm no longer using. :) Best of luck!

You're alright! I love constructive feedback. 😁 It's all part of growth. That's really kind. 🙂 Thanks for the tip! I had to close the curtains in the living room because the sun causes a very strong reflection of the french windows on the tank. Then the ceiling light makes for poor video lighting... 🙃 It'll come in time. There's something to be said about humble beginnings. Seriously, thanks for the tips because I know more about fish tanks than I do videoing. Can you tell? 😂
