I find the 7 day sketch challenge very clever because on day one, it can be difficult sometimes to see his own mistakes (proportions, etc). Whereas on day 2, with a fresh look, we can see them. i will try that. Thank you for the idea !

I so agree with working on values, besides an accurate sketch values will make your art look realistic. I was having trouble getting some white icing dark enough for a tutorial and finally took the plunge and went way darker then what I thought the photo was but it made all the difference in the end :)

Thank you Kirsty for this helpful video. I noticed you answered questions from your survey. My resolution for this year is improving color accuracy. I’ve improved highlights/shadows with your tutorials. Your tip using black paper to practice your highlights is true. I’ve done this method before by using white colored pencil and ink on toned paper, and it looks realistic. For those who are beginners and under a budget, I recommend buying newspaper print (I.e. Strathmore Newsprint) for practicing highlights/shadows, but only if you’re using art pencils or graphite pencils because the paper is very thin.

That fourth challenge is an interesting idea. I'm one of those people who often spends far too long on a piece, so I've attempting to find ways to speed up my work, but I suppose it depends on what you're doing and what the circumstances are (in my case, I draw things from life, and they don't always like to remain in one place, so being able to portray them quickly is essential).

Hi KP Thanks for the real good advice in this video. Colors and color mix is something I have good control of! But when it comes to value and proportions, I'm lost. I struggle to be able to see the right tones in the different colors. In terms of proportions, I have started using a divider to help. Your main advice you give in this video is clearly "spend more time on your image / art". I tend to be too much result oriented than to have patience and enjoy the experience of creating an image :) I look forward to your good input hoping to be able to develop these skills. Thanks :)

I recreated my very first pet portrait with pastels. The first one I used the wrong paper (cartridge paper, oh dear) my drawing was good.of a close shot of a tabbie cats face. I just used pastel pencils. I filled up the tooth of the paper so I couldn’t finish the drawing to a stage I wanted. The fur on the nose was too long and the colours look dull. Three years later I did the same picture again to see if I’ve made any improvements. Oh boy I did improve. This time I used Pastel mat paper, pan pastels then pastel pencils. The fur was perfect, very short fur on the nose. The tones of colour show more tabbie greens in it so my colour choices where perfect. The darks were darker and the highlights were brighter. This leally boosted my confidence. I did this last year. 😀 I just wait share.

kirsty, i have a question please answer if you can but when i do colored pencil drawings, my outline sketch doesnt look very accurate and i do use a phone for the reference photo. how can i improve in sketching my outline? another questions i have is that when i color my colored pencil drawings, i add a couple of layers before i begin burnishing. when i become to burnish, the colors seem a little odd and they dont blend smoothy. im not sure what i do wrong, can you please help me?
@FineArtforChrist4 жыл бұрын
Hey Madison, as far as getting your sketch outline to be more accurate are you currently free-handing? If you are, it might help to use a sketch app to see what your reference will look like sketched out. Sometimes the colors in your reference can mess with your perception of the reference, making you draw it inaccurately. Another thing you can do is to try other methods like the grid method, tracing, or using a proportion divider. Alright, for you next question my guess is that you didn't have enough color on your paper in order to burnish effectively. My recommendation is to add more layers than you think you need, since you can't add too many but can, not have enough. As you practice you will figure out how many layers is necessary. Hope this is helpful!

Any low tack, acid free masking tape should work however if they don't you can sometimes use a hairdryer to encourage the tape to let o of the paper. As far as paper goes, you will want to use a high quality watercolor paper. I recommend the Arches or Fabriano Artistico Hot pressed 140 LB. watercolor papers. Hope this is helpful!

Hey Z G, Are you using solvents to blend and what paper are you using? My guess is you are trying to put the white pencil on top of other darker colors to add the highlight back in? If this is what you are trying to do, then that may be why you are struggling. While the Caran De Ache white is a more opaque pencil compared to other brands it is still too translucent to get an area back to being bright white. What you should try to do is figure out where those bright areas are before you add color, that way you will be able to work around those areas and save the white of the paper. Then you can add white pencil to that area. If this is not what you are trying to do, let me know what you are doing, and I will see if I can help!
