Instead of air brush paint (acrylic ink) for underpainting or increasing chroma, I like to use permanent (alcohol based) markers like Sharpie or Copic. Because they aren't acrylic, it's much easier to layer over them. Your art is beautiful, by the way. Thank you for the video.
@SunnyCDolls
@SunnyCDolls 4 жыл бұрын
Copics are not lightfast and will fade over time on original paintings. They are great if you are going to do prints.
@red0421

I use Promarkers, they're alcohol based markers that with a bit of practice can be blended quite nicely. Each marker can cost roughly £2 individually, but given the amount of ink in each pen I'd say it's worth it. You can get sets with about 20 pens or so for £25 online, but my memory could be faulty. You can buy them on Amazon. If you're looking for fair priced, good quality markers for artwork, these would be my recommendation, I've tried a few different markers over the years but my promarkers remain my favourite!

For the uneven eyes problem, I take that as something I need to improve on. I first draw the left eye slowly, then draw the right eye while looking at the left one. After the sketch, I take a picture of it and flip horizontally to see if there's any mistakes. And also, if it's during the night and you have a big light source, I flip the drawing on the light to see the other side.
@jeanniemcd0321
@jeanniemcd0321 6 жыл бұрын
hi im just irrelevant but that is a very good idea bc I have the same problem ,something I do to help it to draw both eyes at the same time,for instance drawing the left pupil then adding the right pupil and just going thru step by step.

In theory, a hint of asymmetry in eyes, nostrils, etc.. can be good because the body is organic.
@songmei2938
@songmei2938 5 жыл бұрын
Well, your theory is not strictly true. Nature aims for symmetry. It may not always achieve it but the differences are slight. If, indeed, there is some slight asymmetry then of course it must be honoured. I respect your view that asymmetry can be introduced deliberately for artistic reasons though. We can all agree that the only real solution to all this is to observe the subject closely and paint what you actually see. As she says in the video, it's good to observe from a distance occasionally too.

That's REALITY.
@tonygohagan2766
@tonygohagan2766 4 жыл бұрын
@@songmei2938 I wonder if you've considered Nature in Reality. It aims for Wholeness, and Proportion, and Symmetry but symmetry is not Reflection/Mirror Image. Perfect Symmetry is man-made aesthetic but exists in Mathematics too. Asymmetry is Always present in everything, your powers of Artistic Observation would've revealed that to you. ( Or they will, once acute. ) As far as nature is concerned, Symmetry has parameters that it can function within: Everything is Asymmetrical but not noticeably so; usually it means something has gone wrong if the asymmetry and proportion is immediately noticeable, yet, sometimes, it's purposefully so, but not in Humankind. Watch this as a fun demo of this fact ! kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHiWioVpe7egatk
@songmei2938
@songmei2938 4 жыл бұрын
@@tonygohagan2766 Yeah, sure. Note that I said nature AIMS for symmetry - not that it always achieves it. I guess we might conjecture that the whole thing starts at the molecular level. A good example would be that of growing crystals when in perfect conditions we see regular patterns and symmetry. But flawed crystalline structures are more appealing to the eye. I would say that at an intellectual level we admire symmetry (you mentioned Mathematics) ... and yet imbalance and intricacy fascinate us at a more fundamental level, speaking to our emotions rather than the intellect. Thank you for making me think more about the subject!
@tonygohagan2766
@tonygohagan2766 4 жыл бұрын
@@songmei2938 Hi ! You're Welcome! Yes nature is always 'imperfect', in that there isn't ever mirror image symmetry, contrary to the Artist's guiding in this video, as the commenter gently pointed out. I had the impression that you posited Perfect Symmetry as the rule of nature, when you said "If, indeed, there is some slight asymmetry then of course it must be honoured. I respect your view that asymmetry can be introduced deliberately for artistic reasons though." Asymmetry is 99.9% the rule of nature, especially regarding faces, thus i think it should be a foundational principal in rendering them. I realise that drawing mirror image symmetry allows viewers of art to concentrate on the image as a whole. Still: If there is slight asymmetry, the Brain reads symmetry and wont notice, as in Life; until it is pronounced. I really admire people who can draw well and have been watching Watercolour and Coloured Pencil vids... i love the results that can be achieved! I'm a Collagiste, i realised my draughtmanship severely lacked, then i drew figurative works, heads, bodies, no faces... still very expressive.. then i discovered collage and 'haven't looked back since' I wish you well.

Have you tried "fluid" watercolor blocks? I've found it to take ink, watercolor, colored pencil, and gel pen really well together. It's a budget option, but I love the quality and minimal texture without having to turn to something as smooth as hot press. Very insightful video!

You probley wont see this but i just want to say that I just started using watercolor and paint in my art and i thought I wouldn't like it since my comfort zone is markers, colored pencil, etc. And I actually enjoyed it to my surprise! So I'm trying to learn how I can improve since I just started just a week ago and this helped me understand quite a few things about it because I was struggling a bit, so thanks! I'm thinking about starting a channel of my own although my art isn't the exact best thing but there is always room for improving! I hope I become as good as you in the future and you really inspired me. :)

For the brighter colors (she said brilliant but I'm assuming she meant brighter!) you can mix your color with white guache, make sure you add a lot of the watercolor, it's going to be brighter and more saturated too depending on what mix you have, plus it's easier cause you can erase your mistakes like this, not permanently but it's much better (and cheaper) solution.
