Another stereotype is like whenever you tell someone that you draw, they automatically assume that you are some sort of art goddess that can just draw EVERYTHING PERFECTLY, when in reality every artist is at different stages of their learning process, and usually an artist also have like one or two focus areas and can't draw EVERYTHING. Like for example some artists have trained drawing humans or animals a lot, but they may be really bad at drawing stuff like buildings, cars or nature. And when you then draw something like that, and it doesn't turn out very good they are all like "but I thought you said you could draw?!"

Another thing is like, when people hear the word “artist” they just think of realism. Like, they think the only types of true artists are realism artists, when it takes many, many years to get to that style. Most artists don’t even want to draw realism. There’s semi-realism, cubism, abstract, comical, so on, so forth.

I have never done drugs in my life and yet I've had people describe some of my work as "trippy" or "fever-dream" or ask if it was inspired by an acid trip. And it's like, nope! My mind is just Like That. I sometimes suspect that it has to do with inhibition. I think a lot of creative people can just choose to switch on and off their creative inhibition -- the "this makes no sense" instinct. I always have it "switched off" when I am first drafting (I'm more of a writer than a visual artist), and then I switch it on during revision. I think the people who assume that drugs are involved may struggle more with switching off that inhibition on command.

Anyway, I did her hair and face first, and these girls looked over and went "EWWW she's naked!" And at first I was understanding, "oh, im not done, here.." So I added a sweater and boots. I decided to have her wear jeggings, which from her position, wouldnt have many folds. So i finish this sketch, no coloring or outline, and show them. AND THESE FREAKING GIRLS WENT "she still looks naked.." Pointing to her pants. I colored in her pants with the pencil, showing it AGAIN. "She still looks-" i just stood, looking over at their drawing "YOUR STICK FIGURE IS NAKED" and walked over to my friends. SORRY i had to get that out because i hate it when people do that to SUCH an extent. -_-

A stereotype that I see often from ignorant students in my school is that all artists have to master hyper realism and that they only draw still life or portraits of themselves. Like yeah, we have to practice realism, but after we learn it we bend it to make it fun, and it's still art.

A stereo type that I see a lot that really annoys me and also doesn't make sense is, "Every artist is depressed and they draw to cheer themselves up." Well, some artists may be like this, but I mean SOME people may wear blue and be sad and wear yellow and be happy, vise versa, doesn't make sense? Exactly. I think we just really need to get out there that artists create art because that is what they choose to do, not because they're ALWAYS venting or ALWAYS depressed and cheering themselves up. But I wouldn't be surprised if there was in extroverted artist. Yeah, I got that once. Once, I was drawing a rather curvy girl, and one guy came up, when I wasn't even done and started going "Where are her eyes? Where are her hands? Where are her clothes? Are you drawing some messed up kinky porn?". By them I wanted to rip my drawing to shreds. Well... I kinda do that... Maybe even over a million You can help with art by selling it and donate to a homeless shelter, and you can retrace your steps in that stranded island to make a map and sketch the island to tell future people that it looked like that a long time ago. I just had an argument with a friend about this because he doesn't see art as a real job. I think it comes from the fact that they think you just sit relaxing in front of your computer for couple of hours and that's it instead of working hard,it can be especially annoying to argue with people about it, because as someone who's trying to become a professional but who's not earning any money (yet) it's frustrating to have people put down the years of effort you put into your art. I try to posts videos every week and I make lengthy tutorials so having some of my friends not understand that I have a deadline and cannot hang out sometimes pisses me off. Usually people just say to you "oh but you can just draw after that" without understanding that I spend my whole week, sitting on on computer drawing and editing and as soon as I finish one work/video I start the next one right away.

Eliza hamilton, I feel you even though I am in 5th grade ab to go to sixth. Also a lot of people think I'm drawing porn just because I haven't finished the actual piece. Eventually at some point in your life if you go art school or just love to do art in general you will have to learn how to draw anatomy by watching. Well naked people. It's a normal thing not that I do that but some people do have to do that, so if you are going to walk up to me drawing people don't think I'm drawing porn. It's annoying and go away if you re going to say that to me lol

@@idontactlikethisanymoreyal6577 yea it's pretty annoying even though I don't draw people I draw animals instead but when I put down the basic guidelines they're like "Why are u just drawing shapes?" and it's the same goD DAMNED PEOPLE EVERY TIME LIKE bruh please just LEARN and especially in my AFJROTC class (I plan to join the military after high school) I get made fun of so much for drawing like a couple of guys called me a furry and I was like "Ok..? and am I supposed to be offended? So what if I am one? Just cause I specialize in animals doesn't mean I'm a furry" doesn't help that i have general anxiety disorder so these confrontations that I get make me incredibly nervous and they're just standing there like "y u sweating so much u good?" but yea. @mathieuw38994 жыл бұрын
Well the second one is understandable but there are some limits, art is not only about anime (even thought I do mostly that) so yeah I get why this situation can annoy you. I had one friend who is sometimes a rude person to me and my other friends telling us (me and my group of friend who are boys) that "anime isn't real and the girls in it too", I mean yeah we like anime, but we know it's not real like wtf was she trying to tell us? Did she really thought she was making us learn something ? And days after that stupid comment about anime (knowing that I draw only in that style) she asked me at lunch in front of all our friends to draw her in anime style (I don't want to be rude to her but I don't like her look btw and I don't want to do it for free) I flat out said "no" and she got akward for the rest of lunch. *it happened during my first year of college* And if she is going to make stupid comments "reminding us" that anime girls aren't real then she shouldn't ask me to draw her in anime style with such enjoyement without me judging a little bit her IQ because she annoyed us good times with her BS.

If you're ever asked to do something you don't particularly want to do, quote a price to make them go away. It should be high enough that if anyone ever does want to pay it, it might actually be worth it to you, and if they're really willing to pay it then your high price is actually a reasonable price and that says something about your value. It's win-win. If you find you're getting more requests from people actually willing to pay your high quote than you can (or want to) handle, raise that quote until you get a number of clients that you are okay with. I know people who have launched very successful side-gigs doing this method, and they were shocked at just what their value really was to other people. Just be sure to get paid up front.

Some random person: “Oh, you can tell someone is an artist if they dress really weird. You know, like they stand out.” Me: *A music nerd/drawer/writer/introvert that wears the same grey sweatshirt all the time, a t-shirt, black leggings, and black fuzzy boots.* “Yeah, totally” (Fun Fact: my family jokes that this is my “uniform” since it’s what I wear almost year-round until summer. They even tell me that I need to expand my wardrobe. The thing is, if I wasn’t so lazy and focused on my art and school, then I would wear more interesting clothes. But I am lazy, not just to put interesting clothes on, like dresses and skirts for example, but wearing them through the day. Also, my “uniform” makes me blend in so much that people leave me alone: introvert tip there 😎)

Maybe you should have a handbag to put the notebook in! Handbags are usually hard to reach in or steal(Its hard to steal if you always have a good grip on the hand part when you have it on your shoulder) Some handbags even have a lock on it with a code or you have to have a pair of keys. I know I know, I need to get over it, but seeing better artists then me just brings me down.. I know, there will always be people who are better artists then me. But I perder to work alone, I enjoy art, but working with people in art discourages me. (One last irrelevant thing) since I don't have much confidence in my art abilities. I am IN FURY when people snatch my sketchbook. It's my personal property. Thats like seeing somebody on their phone, snatching it from a COMPLETE STRANGER to see what they're doing.. 😡😠

My stereotypes are: 1. Artists are selfish if they don’t give free art. (Artists work super hard on their work! Also, if you ask for a commission from them, it’s obvious that you like their work a lot! So, it’s not like it would be super horrible art. It’s like going to a expensive restaurant (even though the art isn’t that expensive,) and ask for free food! It’s super rude and please don’t think this.) 2. Artists are all very introverted. (This is not true, not all artists are introverted, I’m more on the introverted side, but it’s about 71% introvert and 29% extrovert.) 3. If a drawing has a little bit of gore in it, the artist who drew it are emo and super edgy. (I feel like I don’t even need to explain.) I have a lot more, but this is all I’ll type.
@ignoremelol25764 жыл бұрын
I agree with the second and third one, the first one nobody ever thinks about me lol, but yeah I don’t have many friends who I actually hang out with, so when people see me drawing they think I’m introverted, and I’m not. I’m extroverted with all my friends I’m just quiet lol. Also I’m not edgy or emo or depressed or anything, I just like drawing gore, and like horror and stuff :/
@KeepCalmContemplateYourChoices4 жыл бұрын
1. If you don't want to pay for someone who's WILLINGLY making art for you though they don't have to, YOU are the selfish person. 2. Not all artists are, some are really outgoing! But I'm 89% introverted and 11% extroverted. I like talking to friends but if I can get any excuse not to go anywhere I will use that excuse. 3. aaaAAAAAHHH I hate this stereotype. Like, WHY do people assume that?

Not to rain on your parade, but please don't go to art school. It is a waste of money and time. You probably won't ever get hired to work for Disney or Pixar because the system is so tight and restrained for the very best. Trust me on this, don't ever give up on your art path, but please don't expect to end up at the biggest Animation company of all time. I have experience with this. Even my Animation Professor of many years couldn't get a job there. The best thing to do is get a degree in something that you can enjoy and make a secure income with, (Like Nursing, Health, Dentistry, etc) while still working on your art. That way you have a backup job that you'll never worry about losing. I'm almost 30, and have Student loans up the yin-yang from Art School at AIP. PLEASE do not make the same mistakes me and many other artists I know have made. All the best. Please never stop drawing!

One thing I've noticed is that people think artists will draw for free, or for very little. (e.g. "exposure") Some kid in my class wanted me to do artwork for his game. He was planning on paying me fifty cents. For an entire game's worth of artwork, he wanted to give me less than a dollar. He got really offended when I told him that was not enough.

ViolinFruit wot. Is he crazy? XD. 50 cents doesn't afford anything. Even around $75 it maybe $100+ isn't enough for a game.

KhOrganization Yeah, I didn't even want to work with him to be honest, because he's rude. I proposed $30 per fully-rendered still image, and $10 per completed frame of animation, not including still frames. Of course, he refused my offer and decided to make the art himself. He didn't realise he needed funds to make a game, rather than just pocket change.

ViolinFruit exactly lmao its not easy making a game. It takes years(atleast if you're trying to make something "decent" or "good") and especially money. If you want help from other people, collaboration is needed, you need to work as a team if you're working with other people. Even a simple looking game costs funds to make

CactusClovers Yeah, he was making it with the assumption he would be greenlit on Steam. I don't actually know that much about making games, but I know it'd be unlikely for someone his age (at the time, he was around 12-13) to make a successful game. He had no funds, no help, no demand, and given how he's still in school, probably not a lot of time.

Slinky Plays I wanna start commissions as well, but I don't actually have the means to do so. (I just do simple requests for now.) The only reason I really wanted payment on something like this was because of the sheer size of it. An entire game of art sounds daunting for only one person.

A lot of these stereotypes are what make me not want to tell people that I consider drawing a hobby, especially since they think I basically make quick, easymoney by doing comissions, since I am relatively good at drawing, they assume that I always find it fun and easy. I find it really frustrating, seeing as it can be just as hard as any other job

I don't know about you, but I think being a surgeon is harder than drawing for a living. After all nobody's life depends on you drawing a picture.

Alexhander Handleton But again, not everyone has the nerves solid enough to be a surgeon. I don't.

Duntem Draws Even if you don't have the nerves to be a surgeon, you should still respect the fact that being a surgeon is much more demanding than being an artist.
