Art schools like CalArts and SCAD make lots of promises and demand lots of tuition, but are they worth it? I go over the pros and cons of formal art education and hopefully answer some questions you guys have about it~

tell that to all of my teachers. no, seriously. please. i got a low mark because my abstract picture looked too much like a bunny. it was a circle with two half circles on the circle. there were other elements to the drawing. wtf.

I mean, fundamentally, there are. You need to learn certain things that evoke true stimulating, and emotional response, but they are easily bendable, which is why cartoons, although very unrealistic, are so appealing :)

Fun history about a teacher that "hated my art": My life drawing/gesture teacher hated anime/manga and such, he was almost like the Denzel Crocker + Eraserhead of art stuff. I don't really draw in manga style in class, but once i went to his class using an anime shirt (nothing loud, but still) and he decided that, since i liked anime, everything I made was anime/manga style and he wanted to destroy everything i made with a fierce fury. I had a bad feeling about my drawing exam, so I suggested a "blind exam", which is basically drawing what he wanted us to draw, but without writing our names. Then he could put the grade on the back of the sheet, turn it around and let the owner of the drawings pick their own. Guess who got one of the top grades... Ps: He started to watch some old animes/mangas and we talked about them every now and then. His harsh classes also helped me to figure a lot of things out, too. It was fun :D Ps²: My art college is free. Cheers from Brazil.

I'm in art school at the moment, but its a huge letdown. Ive been here for 2 years now and totally lost my motivation. Most teachers don't even show up to the classes, and at the end of the year they just give everyone an A and that's it. I didnt even realise how my skills just got worse and worse over the time. So now I'm trying my hardest to get back into art on my own and find motivation again. So a good advice to everyone who is about to begin art school, fortunately not every school is like mine, but still, always do what you like in the style that comes natural to you. In school you can learn the basics, but if you really want to stay on this path, school is not enough, rather just a starting point. Good luck to everyone and keep practicing!! ^^

The one thing that would be very difficult is her style is very rough and would be difficult to redraw over and over. Lavender Towne’s style is heavily reliant on shadows and highlights, which would make animation a nightmare because of having to redraw the shadows over and over, slightly tweaking them each time. If that wasn’t implemented, then the style would feel like a knock off. Many changes would need to be made. However, it would be very pleasing to look at, and changes could probable be made to make it easier to animate.

At my high school we have an art society ,it is full of all kinds of artists, everybody is friendly and help each other out. It is really crazy in that room since you can do whatever you want. They do give us optional tasks to do and they display them. Heck you have people doing wooden carvings to people using drawing tablets. You can bring anything you want with you if it is legal of course and after a year you get a badge almost giving you a title of a dedicated artist and we are really like a small little community of people. OH GOD I WROTE A BOOK IN THE COMMENT SECTION!

To all the kiddos ready to enter the adult world: I know things seem scary. College, expenses, etc. I was once there. I used to have panic attacks about going to a university and dealing with thousands and thousands of people and college costs. I am currently a senior and soon gonna get a "real job". Anybody that is where I once was, I have only this to say: -You will be ok. Even if you mess up, it may seem like the world is crashing, its not. You will be ok. -I can't stress this enough. Take out only the loans you NEED. Dont take anything to pay for your expenses. Student loans are serious and follow you around if you don't pay em off. Avoid them if possible. Look for potential scholarships too. Sorry for the novel. But this is something I feel is important to say.

Cannot itterate this enough. I'm taking loans for my 2 years of community college and I'll have already at least 5000 to pay back (the loans program here has bursaries too and the govt is nice with giving more bursaries). I'm planning on applying for scholarship when I go to uni since the one I want to go to has low scholarship expectations. That's another tip I have; look for programs with low expectations for scholarships, and make sure they're at least 80% full

I'm graduating high school in 6 months and I'm a bit worried about all this stuff Sometimes I feel like maybe I should've started thinking about this earlier, should've gotten a part-time job when I was 16 (the earliest you can get it without needing your parents' permission in my country), because I know my dad started working early (during crisis and because his parents didn't make much but still) and my mom started working when she was 18 and went to uni And here's me, feeling anxous already just knowing I have less than a year untill I turn 18 when I don't feel ready at all, and on top of that I have to start thinking about applying to art school, starting a job (I don't even know what kind of job) and worrying about paying for my education (I though about taking a student loan and it looks pretty good but I know I'm not knowlegable enough to know all the details) I really hope I can get through this TwT

Kyoko senpai I just finished 7th grade. My school encourages (rather, made us) look for a possible career option when we started 6th grade, and at the time I was thinking 'Wait... Some of us don't know what we want to do as a career yet'. Luckily, at the start of 5th grade, I started thinking about making art my career (because for some reason I thought about those things back then.) and now that I've been doing it for a while I thought, yeah. This is something I want to do, and now I'm here, watching this video. It might be smart to think about this kind of thing now, but, it also may be smart to just sit back and enjoy life without thinking about it for a little while. It really depends on what you want to do.

As some one who has been to art school themselves, I totally agree you should go if you are serious about wanting to do art/drawing for a job. You will have ups and downs with art school just like anything, but just being in an environment that supports creation and the growth of your artistic skill while also learning the basics is something that helped me so so so much. It helped that my schools teachers were great and the ones who were bad you could learn to take the good bits of the critique and learn that not every teacher agrees with one another and you don't have to agree with every teacher, but learn what you can from them. Even bad classes helped me to learn to deal with people who are difficult to work with in how i need to work with clients who are stubborn or difficult to work with. Art college helped me so much, and I'm where i am today because of it.

Heyoo, former SCAD student here and I'm posting here to talk about the variety among art schools: Con #1: Scad is soooo expensive I went for two semesters and I'm 50 grand in debt. I'm now going to school for psychology, so hopefully I can get a job to help pay that off. Con #2: Luckily SCAD has no campus at its motherland, so its spread throughout downtown Savannah. While this increases your chances of being mugged, you also don't lose that touch with reality. Con #3: SCAD doesn't expect you to know jack about art, but they also turn you into a sort of jack of all trades in your first year. They start from the VERY basics, and work you up, so that even those attending SCAD for the business side of art-- and will never have to draw a thing- know all about composition and painting and yayyyy (I guess yay lolol) Con #4: There are two types of professors at scad. The ones who would say "No, dear, you have to get your rest to stay healthy. Take showers. Eat your meals." Then load you down with an impossible work load. The other type is the kind of professor that would laugh at those of us missing four days of sleep and say "Welcome to art school and the artist's life, fucko" and walk off. Con #5: This really wasn't a problem at scad. They really only graded on the foundations of art. This is something I REALLY liked. I agree with all of your pros, so I won't comment on them lmao

Wahhbajack Just graduated from KCAI majoring in animation and I do not regret going to art school at all, even if I am in debt. I have an internship at a studio in Japan this year. There is so much stuff I learned from art school that I wouldn't have learned if I didn't go. KCAI is one of the few art schools in the US that have an actual college campus with many buildings. KCAI is next to renown museums and the plaza where the rich people go. There is a rich neighborhood next to the school. My school is sandwich between the rich and ghetto neighbor hoods lol. My time at art school was fun!

SyraanProductions Hey dude, don't worry! You just have to work harder and gain a network. Ask your teachers if they know anyone! A big help is to see if you can get your work into an animation showcase (that's where those companies usually pick out people, the big art schools usually have their own) some places will let you in if you display talent. I know it's a hard field, I'm only able to go to SCAD with loans, but I think anyone can make it! Try applying for internships, usually you just have to be going for an Animation degree, not to an art school. Good luck!

SyraanProductions I agree with everyone else ^^ networking is the savior of lives lol I was actually planning on trying to intern at Disney just to form a network. Even if I don't get the internship, the members at Disney would have then seen my work given me more credibility when I start my own studio. Which is always an option too ^^ it's a little harder to get stable and to stay active when starting your own studio or art business, but it is an option. And certainly, networking really helps. If someone respected vouches for your work suddenly you become respected. It could be someone as small as a town favorite artist to someone as big as a Disney CEO. Either way, it's a start in establishing your art career, and the more people you network the better chance you have of succeeding.

I'm in an art college right now and I'm not sure if you still are, but I'm mainly leaving this comment here for other people - seriously don't hurt yourself for art! Get sleep and eat and take care of yourself! Grades don't matter as much as your health and if your grades dip enough that you lose scholarships, then maybe art school isn't for you and that's okay. You don't need a degree to do whatever art thing you wanna do, and people who need to see a degree before they'll buy your art is silly and you should probably not work with them anyways. Also talk to your teachers, they should help you or at least be understanding and offer advice if you're sick or tired or whatever it is. And talk to your peers too! If you talk enough about the importance of getting sleep and eating, then eventually people will do it and hopefully it'll change that toxic mindset of 'suffering is the only way to do art school' to one of caring about each other's health.
@LavenderTowne
@LavenderTowne 7 жыл бұрын
So true. And the worst part is, even though in the short term working that hard might bring you better grades, it eventually catches up with you and makes your grades even worse, so in the long term you end up suffering _and_ getting worse grades. It's a lose-lose situation.

Business is not sleep deprivation and starving, whoever told you that you need to work yourself to death needs to check themselves because that's not how art careers or the art industry works. There are people out who do work themselves to death, and guess what, they die. They die from overworking. And just because some of those people have made good things does not mean that's how all artists should live to be successful. You don't have to live like it's the 1400s to paint like Leonardo Da Vinci and you don't have to die at your desk to make a good cartoon or whatever. You need to learn time management in order to succeed. You need to be able to balance life and work, no matter what career, art or otherwise. Business is learning when something is done and moving on. Business is not staying up for 48 hours, drinking only energy drinks, and not talking to anybody just because you need this one thing to be perfect. Business is learning how to work faster to be able to do what you want while still getting enough sleep and food and such. Business is hard and stressful and takes a lot of time and you have to be dedicated, yes, but dedication is not killing yourself over every project. You need to be able to take care of yourself. And you need to learn how to take care of yourself while still being able to work so you can continue to take care of yourself.

The average bachelors degree leaves a student in $10,000-$20,000 of debt. With 80% of students being below $30,000. To leave school with $200,000 of debt is insane! You could buy a two story house for that amount, or go to medical school! You will most likely never be able to pay it off. There's NO NEED to go to some fancy, scammy art school. Find a local college that has a good arts program instead. Your degree will be the exact same as anyone's from an art school, except $180,000 less expensive.

LionJayHollyDove Three ah well it depends. If you want high end products like toonboom or maya then it can get pricey for the initial cost. However, you can start with free things too ^^ Things like WMM and MS Paint or Blender can be great for learning the basics on animation. There are even programs like OpenToonz, Pencil 2D, Synfig, or even Plastic Animation Paper (which is getting Newer version released after its development) are great for animation (mostly 2D though, Blender is the best free 3D animation software). If you don't mind spending a bit more, you can get a proper video editor (I personally use Cyberlink because it's easy to use and give me multiple tracks to work with unlike WMM which I used originally), something like photoshop, etc. you can even rent flash monthly for 20$ or less if you're an active student. And for a little higher price tag, you can rent the entire adobe collection from photoshop and flash to adobe illustrator and after effects. For 79$ you can even get the Plastic Animation Paper newer version, Animation Paper, after it has been completed. There's a wide range of free or cheap products people can use for animation ^^ You can do pretty awesome things, even with the free products. For example, Blender has the capability to produce realistic models, interact with outside software for motion capture, character skeletons, and can even get plug ins to make it look 2D and such. It has tweeting too, so unless you really want to go in frame by frame you don't have to do so.

is there a lot of bias against certain art styles? I know anime is a style that is judged harshly, but is there any others? I can see others criticizing your style because it might be "lazy". Would your grades flunk simply because of the way you draw? I don't really have a style I like to draw in, but I know I like simpler drawings. I don't know what I want to be but I think art school might be a possible option.
@LavenderTowne
@LavenderTowne 7 жыл бұрын
Mm I've actually never had someone call my art lazy before haha, but there are definitely people who look down on cartoons and -definitely- anime. A lot of my classmates kinda silently judge me but tbh I'm not really too bothered by it anymore. It used to really upset me though. Good teachers won't flunk you for your style, I've only had two that tried to do that. They were super annoying but you can sort of just appease them and then never take another class with them.

кιтту мєυχ The thing with Anime is that if there's something wrong with the proportions(especially in the face), it will usually look pretty disturbing. And there are lots of Anime drawings where the proportions are messed up because beginners usually see it as an easy way to draw a human without needing to know about proportions. But there are teachers who take this kind of stuff to the extreme. Where I live, art usually isn't even considered art unless it's realistic. I don't know if there even is an art school in this country where they teach drawing cartoons.

For me, I naturally draw in an anime-esque style for some odd reason, but I don't usually get flak about it as long as it's proportioned right and contains good details and not like I copied the style of another Mangaka. There are teachers who dislike it because anime is overly stylized and there are some who doesn't really stress over it. My teacher was the latter one. Also to the above comment, there are HELLA schools that teach cartooning. It's a major at SVA where Rebecca sugar attended (creator of Steven universe) there are even some anime courses being made in colleges. There's one I know called Anime Wonderland or understanding the plots and structures of animes like Ghibli Studios and Dragon Ball Z.

+Nina Henderson Where *I* live. I don't live in the US, so it's rather unlikely that I'll end up at Rebecca Sugar's art school. Over here in Germany, things are usually a lot more classy in that department. Animation is for kids and only for kids and any adult who watches it is a creep. You can only take art seriously if it's drawn in a realistic way and if it isn't, it has to be comedy because you can't have it look cartoony and demand it to be taken seriously at the same time. Look up a list of German animated TV shows and you'll find 99% shows for kids under the age of 10 and a few shows for slightly older audiences that usually try to be as American as possible. Most of them aren't even terrible shows, in fact, as far as shows for young kids go they're pretty good, but there isn't a single one that I would tell others to check out. Pretty ironic considering that the oldest animated movie that is still available today was made in Germany.

StarryWarriors My mom wants me to be a boss and start a company, she doesn't want me to be one of those video game artists who are underpaid and work a shit ton of hours. My dad is okay with me being an artist, just worried about how much I'm making. My mom told me to just keep art as a hobby. So once I'm old like 60 or 80, I can paint and make some money. I do agree with them, I'm 14 and I'm thinking of what job I should pursue. I'm thinking of being a designer or go to movie making.

"CalArts is kind of unfair?" BWAHAHAHAHA!!! You need to have most of the money necessary before going to CalArts or your family comes from money, or your "new money" (inheritance, lottery, or you're a successful KZbinr). *ART-BLOCK OR LACK OF INSPIRATION AND OTHER WORDS OF INSPIRATION AND ADVICE* • BOOKS! Read everything, read every day -even if it's only a chapter or a page a day. And also read books or short stories that are not part of your genre comfort zone. Read about stuff you don't know anything about -fiction or nonfiction. • CARTOONS! Watch the kind of cartoons that you want to create. And watch cartoons or animations that are not part of your genre comfort zone. • WRITE STORIES! Write everyday! Even if it's only a paragraph a day or a sentence. WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! Also, record audio acting or narratives and turn them into a written story, a script, or narrative and dialogue to animate to or illustrate. • VIDEO or FILM! Record video footage of yourself, family, friends, random people or animals to use for reference, to animate or illustrate. • CRITIQUES! Don't work in a vacuum, a bubble or a cave. Get other people's eyes on your work or get people to listen to your stories to get positive and negative feedback. All criticism is constructive criticism and honesty -though hard to swallow or hear is part of the struggles in being a creative. • SOCIAL LIFE! Go outside! Hanging out at night or in the day (DAYLIGHT!) among people that think like you or they're interested in art like you is good and healthy. However, it is extremely necessary to socialize with people that don't have artistic abilities or artistic interests -other then watching movies in a group or going to a concert if invited or you have the financial means to do so. • FAILURE! Don't be too afraid to try or get started with a drawing, design, painting, sculpt, story, animation, or any other kind of project. Mistakes are good and sometimes a great learning experience and also they have been known to create happy accidents. • SCHEDULES! Create a schedule to stick to or attempt to stick to -as much as possible! Sleep, take breaks, rest, go for short walks -take a spontaneous shower! *Break up the monotony!!!* • GOALS, PLANS and VISION BOARDS! Create a list of goals to keep your overall intentions in front of you or to stay focused on. Without a vision or goal insight we're just going in circles but still expecting results or any type of changes. • STAY EXCITED, ENJOY YOURSELF! Don't just "have fun". Fun is not a big enough or powerful enough feeling, action or reaction to have when you're a creative. Stay positive, stay excited, stay realistic but also, DON'T STOP DREAMING!!! ✓ THAT'S IT! That's all I have to say -so far- in a nutshell. And yes, I am a nut. I'm a artist!!! 😂 *I hope that some of you or even if only one person finds this helpful or appreciates this advice or an entertaining list of bullet points to laugh at or mock, well that's fine too. 😂 ...I'm a artist and a ginger, so I'm doubly sure that I have no soul. HA!!! 😂😂😂

I can't stick to a deadline , I rarely finish anything important , I can't manage my time well with anything because my family is interactive and also last minute type of people. I was born into what would be considered somewhat poor so I can't get into an art school for I'd feel ashamed asking anyone for money and I'm too stressed all the time to do anything right tbh. I can draw without feeling inspired but then I'd no longer take pride in my art. I have yet to even learn to like my art. I feel that if I have to pay to learn how to be an artist and be taught then I no longer am original. I also feel that since I can't move and learn as fast as everyone else artist will become plentiful and will become as common as a job as a worker at a general store. Paints: Away Anxiety: Out Dreams: Crushed I am forcibly removed from my bed and thrown into my feelings.

Bragging about no sleep and those self destructing behaviors are in STEM fields as well. I'm so GLAD to hear someone bring up this issue because everyone acts like it's so normal. During the last month of a semester, I just had to give up on a few things. Like I was so tired and just hated myself for not being able to do better, but the reason I was so tired was because I literally had no break. Just remember! Once you graduate, you have to still love yourself. You may love the major but when you leave, you wanna be in a healthy state of mind that loves yourself. If you don't love yourself, you won't appreciate anything else you accomplish in life.

If you're can't afford art school, I highly suggest taking classes at different places. I go to Attleboro Arts Museum for classes and it's honestly the best thing I've ever done to improve my art. While we're working on whatever we're doing, some instructors ask you to hold up what you're doing and tell you what's good and what you need to change. You use a multitude of supplies and learn so many different things. It's a long drive for me, but it's worth it. So I definitely suggest taking classes and classes from Attleboro Arts Museum in particular. I know that most of you probably can't go there, but if so, go.

Fat Depressent Focus on grades and learning the basics when you get to high school. You got a long time before you need to even start creating a portfolio. Check if there are colleges nearby that offer pre-college programs. If there aren't any nearby, watch KZbin tutorials and start learning how to draw from life or still-life's and such. It's boring as all get out but it'll drastically improve your art and, guess what, that's what you would be doing in art school. Plus maybe experiment in mediums, read a lot of books, watch a lot of movies or shows. Get your imagination running. You're 12. You don't gotta worry right now. Just draw and have fun!

Derpy Daphne Is Derpy I have a similar plight too, But instead, for this year I have to choose the subjects to take and have a national exam of the subjects chosen in 2years. Im thinking of taking both pure literature and art at the same time but that it'll be 10 subjects I'd take and my school most likely won't allow for a unique course. So it's down to either choosing literature or art, I want both but I can't so I gotta sacrifice either one. I can't sacrifice the rest since it's the subjects best for me to study till uni and land a job right after. Gosh I've been thinking about this since last year and I don't know which to choose or choose neither. The thing is I love both literature and art the same so its really hard for me to choose, it's really frustrating

Very smart to start early, usually the art college you want to attend will have specific instructions on what they want in their portfolios so I would always check that, but in general a mix of 'formal' drawings like still life/life drawing in front of a model, and then whatever are your favorite works. For me it was digital cartoon drawings, but you want to make it whatever is the thing you have the most passion for. c:

I'm super worried about the tuition cost, I have two younger siblings and one is only two years younger than me and I really want to go to an art school but I don't think my parents would be able to support me and my brother by the time he's in college.

Nevaliac Isn’t there something called a student support loan? Maybe you could apply for receiving that. But maybe it’s just something that is common in my country. I don’t know.

I love your art style. Sadly for me, drawing just isn't the same like it's been in high school. I used to draw like crazy at that time. Plus, I used to complete more of my projects. Now a days, I lack the motivation I've once had, and I rarely complete any of my drawings. I've also noticed that since then, my skills have diminished. It's like when I look at some of my old drawings from the past, I can't even believe that I even drew that. I wish I had that old spark back. I've been thinking lately about becoming a tattoo artist, but I'll never be able to do so with this current attitude of mine.

@laffy Taffy you should give it a try! You can start practicing the tattooing WHILE you proceed to brush up on & improve your existing drawing/art skills to a higher level that you feel better about. Doing both in tandem, in my opinion, allows to consistently work on both, with less risk of feeling a bit burnt out on any one specific aspect or skill. Maybe you'll end up falling in love with the tattoo art & feel passionate about that while also reigniting your excitement for your other kinds of artwork. You can get really affordable practice machines if you can't afford to go all out right off the bat. Do some practice outline work & see if you have the feel for it & enjoy it, then practice shading & other techniques, & keep doing & practicing your original/traditional artwork, too! It's something I still am determined to do successfully, in addition to all my other art & other type/media. Plus, though money shouldn't be the FIRST priority, the really, REALLY exceptional tattoo artists can make huge income off of tattoo work. :)

Thank you for posting this. Con 3 is what I experienced in middle school and junior high. I took three years of art classes, continually hoping I'd learn stuff, but they didn't teach anything because I guess mostly more accomplished artists took the classes. The teachers would walk around, look at everyone's stuff, and even comment(!) on my lack of skills in a bitter way. Now I look back and think what the heck was wrong with that teacher! The other teacher (the same one for both years of middle school) crumpled up my papers, threw it on the ground, and told me to draw that. I was only 11 or 12, sensitive, and thus misunderstood the abrupt gesture. I tried regardless and she didn't give me /any/ direction when I consequently failed to draw the paper ball and after that didn't give /any/ instruction on how to do anything the rest of the time I had her. I worried about college because of the money thing and now that I hear this I don't know if I want to go through something like that again but as an adult AND with tons of money being thrown at such an education. I've been self-teaching myself art but I thought maybe college would be a more quick way to learn it but maybe not. I've been researching about art school and only now this crucial point came up so thank you!
