5 atomic bunkers in Alkmaar

Protected shelters for all emergencies.
Alkmaar had five protected locations where people could take shelter during a major emergency (for example, biological, nuclear or chemical):
- under the former office of De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB)
- the command bunker of the 'organisatie Bescherming Bevolking (BB)
- the public shelter 'De Vest'
- the emergency administrative post under the town hall
- the Nuclear Chemical Accommodation (NCA) at the Telephone Exchange
The bunkers / shelters were meant to take temporary shelter until the situation was safe again. Some locations were only intended to shelter (De Vest), others were also intended to work from (DNB and the NCA).
The information mentioned in this video relates to the situations at the time of the opening. Most bunkers have now been cleared.
