I have gotten a lot of questions about the rig setup (pole attached to the car for rolling shots) that I use. It is from Rig Pro that you can find on Facebook. Here is a picture of me working with a friend's Subaru on the exact setup. oneninety8.smugmug.com/Other/Chicago/i-bQMqbRN/A

10 useable shots out of 300 at 1/60? Thank you i thought i suck getting 1/30 and im getting one out of 10/20 super sharp. it seems i no longer need to train im at a very good spot im at a spot where 1/125 im almost at 80% accuracy handheld

i discovered the panning blur effect last weekend whilst mucking around with my manual settings at the race track. That was only my 2nd time purposely going out to take photos. It's great what you learn when you just try to be creative and not worry about what everyone else's vanilla shots look like.

I actually like the "frozen" look of motorsport-events, especially in rallying (with flying dust and rocks or even water)
@leirumf5476 Жыл бұрын
Is answering to this even necessary? No, I don't think so. But I'll leave my two cents. I think the reason those shots work being frozen is because the dust, rocks and water are giving the vehicle a sense of velocity. The panning thing also is about creating that sense of velocity. Just two different ways to get the point across, but the point kinda has to be made either it's a boring photo (some people might like it tho)

What about using a ND filter on sunny days? I know some drivers want their cars shot on the track or in open spaces with no buildings/shade.
@robb.sutton6 жыл бұрын
I always used a ND filter when I was doing the rig shots or panning in really bright light. I had to in order to get the shutter speed down. For stagnant shots, normally the shutter speed goes high enough to get correct exposure. Make sure you get a really thin circular polarizing filter when you have to stack the filters though as you will get dark spots in the corners with thick ones.
@t.lastie61836 жыл бұрын
Sounds good...thanks for the info!
@robb.sutton6 жыл бұрын
Sure thing! Thanks for watching and commenting.
@robb.sutton6 жыл бұрын
Also keep in mind that the ND filters will correct for exposure but not for how the light will interact with the lines of the car. The reflections and starbursts will still be there so try to pick a spot where those are minimized.
@t.lastie61836 жыл бұрын
That makes sense. I am still learning how to use the different filters. I just knew the ND would at least allow for a slower shutter speed without my image being blown out on a sunny day.

Hi Robb, really nice video. It's been a while ago, but do you shoot handheld plus the CPL? And do you use single shots or 2 shots? Its hard to get rid of all the reflections in one shot I think
@robb.sutton3 жыл бұрын
Rick, I’ll do it both handheld and on a tripod. You can do multiple shots but I also find that if you remove too much of the reflections the shot can look unnatural. I try to find the best mix of both.
@Housemusic903 жыл бұрын

@NotYourAvgJoe246 жыл бұрын
That’s a decent setup! I’m looking to do the same thing but with a GoPro. Obviously I won’t get as good results but worth a try. The poles aren’t cheap are they, I guess they do hold value pieces of equipment though
@robb.sutton6 жыл бұрын
The setup was pretty expensive but it was overkill to handle the weight. With a GoPro or smaller point in shoot...you wouldn't need something that built.
@NotYourAvgJoe246 жыл бұрын
Do you a company that does rigs for GoPro’s? What length pole would you suggest?
@robb.sutton6 жыл бұрын
The GoPro viewing angle is really wide so you shouldn't need something very long. That said...I have not seen a ready built rig setup designed around a GoPro so you might have to piece something together yourself.

No no no no!! Never recommend Image Stabilization when panning. It will just make artifacts around your subject worst, first thing you do is to turn it off!!! As soon you slowing down the shutter the camera will try to stabilize the frame and make the car "ghosting".
@dronevantagecanada13854 жыл бұрын
Just my opinion...although you're using the rule of thirds in your scene shots, I can't help focusing on the blurry barrel and the mountains in those two pictures. Just my opinion, I think it would look better if the car stood out more over the scenery and not just a part of a beautiful background, which takes the eyes off the subject.
@eksine5 жыл бұрын
it seems like you're yelling throughout the video.
@CatTerrist5 жыл бұрын
Sorry but no. You absolutely want to turn IS OFF or at the least set to panning mode which turns off IS for horizontal movement. The IS will actively fight your motion and try and neuter the effect you want. Why should we listen to you when you get it that wrong on one of the absolute fundamentals of panning?
