I don't think you can go wrong with Paiste, Zildjian or Sabian, depending on the particular cymbal, for sure. Sabians are basically Zildjians as improved by dearly departed Robert Zildjian in the Canadian plant he received in the lawsuit against his brother. But, Sabian did their own thing, for sure too. Sabian is an anagram he and his wife figured out from their kids, Sally, Billy and Andy.

#1 Zildjian cuts bright, bell also bright, clear sticking. Not a good crash ride. #2 Paiste cuts lower in tone, clear sticking bright bell. Not a good crash ride #3 Meinl cuts lowest tonally, very clear sticking, bell low tonally. Could crash ride #4 Sabian standard cut, sticking washy, brighter bridge, bell mid range. Much more of a crash ride #5 Istanbul agop standard cut, pleasent sticking, bell blended in, mid range tone. Great crash ride My humble opinions are based on your title. Best "Rock" ride cymbals. Everyone's ears and preferences will come into play here. However, how very lucky we are as drummer's to have a channel like DCP to provide us with video comparison's like this. Thank you guys so much from your fellow drumming community 🥁🤘

The Zildjian has a beautiful high frequency that appears about 3/4 into the full hit. None of the other's have it. It's such a sweet sound.
@HighlanderNorth1
@HighlanderNorth1 Жыл бұрын
I think the Zildjian was hands down the best at crashing. It was way louder and brighter than what I'd expect from a K series cymbal, which tend to be darker and lower volume. But it *IS* a K _Custom_ , which means it's going to be experimental and different. I thought the Istanbul had the most complex sound as a pure ride cymbal, and it's crash sound was _OK_ . But it's bell sound was kinda odd. Its bell sounds kinda like an old school alarm clock! Maybe the Istanbul isnt ideal for pure rock music(??), but good for jazz.... The Paiste was nice, and would work well as a rock ride. I thought the Sabian HH raw bell one was equally nice. The Meinl ride doesn't have a very good crash capacity, but was adequate at riding.. it's bell sound was good.

My favorite rock ride is the Meinl serpents ride. My favorite all around ride of all time is the Meinl polyphonic ride but if you want a loud rock ride with a crazy loud bell with great stick definition and still have crashability the serpents ride is where it’s at! The polyphonic ride has a raw bell but it’s still defined and bright and the crashability is the best ever on that ride.

Good video, nice to see someone doing Rock Rides. Another KILLER Rock/Hard-Rock/Metal ride to check out is the Zildjian A Custom Rezo Ride... Very articulate and defined ping that's very cutting without being offensive. It's VERY clean and musical, and blends well with out overpowering. Absolute ear candy. check it out if you can find one, I've seen them for cheap because I don't think people know what they have

As a life long (and very happy) Sabian player, I have to say that the Paiste and Meinl rides sounded the best for this particular application to me. Not that the other offerings were bad, but the sound I would want for solid rock playing was exemplified in both of those cymbals. I have to say I am becoming more and more intrigued by Meinl cymbals in general.
@HighlanderNorth1
@HighlanderNorth1 Жыл бұрын
😕 I've had a somewhat negative opinion of Sabian cymbals, because of the _extreme_ dislike I had for the very 1st crash cymbal I ever owned. It was a Sabian B8 of roughly 18" that came with my first drum set(an old worn out kit that I bought in 1994 for $200 with stands and 3 newer cymbals). The 14" Paiste hi hats included with that set were very thick and clanky, but they were acceptable. However, the Sabian B8 crash sounded so bad that I cringed every time I hit it. I tried to avoid using a crash because of how bad that cymbal sounded! About 2-3 months later, I bought a new Pearl Export series 5 piece set, but used up all my extra money on it. So, again, I was stuck with those same cymbals. Then I moved in 1995, and wasn't able to play drums where I moved to, so I sold the set. It wasn't til 2004 that I got a new Sonor kit, with an entry level Zildjian cymbal set(ZHT or ZBT, I don't recall which). All of them sounded immensely better than that Sabian B8 crash. Since then I've heard quite a few Sabian cymbals I like, mostly HHX. The Sabian HH ride ^here sounds pretty nice.

I think most will be drawn to the Paiste, however, that distinct tone of their alloy and design does not blend well with other manufacturers. I don't like to mix brands but it is possible to do so with most i.e. Zildjian, Sabian, Meinl etc. Given that, I recommend and own the K hybrid. At that, the particular one I possess is heavier that the norm so it is undisputedly my go to "Rock Ride"! Looking and sounding good Tony!

Observation #1: Years ago I was the first drummer in the local rock and punk scene to buy a K Custom ride. The bell and the ping were great, but the "dinner plate" wash kept it from being perfect. Looks like Zildjian finally solved that dilemma. And it only took 30+ years! Observation #2: Is there any doubt from the retailer and peanut gallery that the CCD's are the greatest bargain in all of cymbal manufacturing right now? It's a good thing Meinl is hitting on these because someone in Germany needs to throw them back on to Mr. Rodgers Trolley OUT of the Land of Make Believe where you price your Euro-style cymbals at the same price point as the 2002's, and expect to win in the marketplace.

Another great video! What's missing (and it's important) is the gram weights of all of these. Gram weight helps you identify that "sweet spot" you like in a cymbal. And, with some manufacturers, certain models can have quite a bit of gram weight difference (within the same model), thus making them sound different from cymbal to cymbal.

The K Custom seemed to have the most middle of the road characteristics in terms of wash/ping/bell/crash, which is why it's my favourite of the bunch. (Still not as great as the A Custom Medium I have, but anywho). The others are all better in other areas but lack in certain ways, like have a better bell but the crash is too gong-y etc, so of those 5 the K was the most well-rounded.

This was great! I really enjoy these side-by-side comparisons. But in the case of a ride cymbal, it really should be played and chosen in person. I’ve played drums long enough to know that it’s rare for any two ride cymbals, even the same make and model, to sound the same. I have owned two different Sabian HH Raw Bell Dry rides, and they both sounded VERY different. This one in the video sounds more like the one I have now, but it too sounds even a bit different. For me this was a toss-up between the Sabian, the Zildjian K hybrid, and the Istanbul. I could be happy with any one of them. But I’d want to try at least 2 of each model before choosing!
