Thanks for sharing what to plant in your border that is colorful during Fall. I'll try to find the ginger wine ninebark because of the shrubs dark pinkish red blooms. Garden centers don't seem to have the shrubs etc. that they once did but eventually I will find what is needed. I learn so much from watching your videos and you're an expert with how to care for everything that grows in the garden! Really appreciated!😍

Have often used Ninebarks as the height in container planters, leaving them full or thinning significantly, depending on the design. In zone 5 spots protected by overhangs, etc, they have survived multiple winters before needing to be transplanted into the landscape due to size.

Oak leafed hydrangeas are native to my area, here in northern Florida, but only in certain specific locations. There is a state park in a next door town called Torreya State Park. This is where the oak leafed hydrangeas grow nearest to my town, as well as some evergreen trees that are the park's namesake. That park is the only place in the state of Florida where they grow as far as I can remember. And they only grow in one other small section of the US, as well as a couple of other rare places in the world. The Florida ones have been plagued with some type of slow-acting disease for decades, and most of the trees, which are few, don't grow well at all, and will eventually die. The University of Florida in Gainesville has researched and studied and tried various methods over the last several decades to try and save these rare native trees, but to no avail. They are sometimes called the gopher wood tree, and some think that the ones near the middle east/Africa area were what Noah used to build the ark, but who really knows. And yes, getting back to the oak leafed hydrangeas, the native ones that you can buy occasionally at nurseries near where I live, as well as the more exotic types that are mentioned on this video, are really nice plants to use in the landscape. Thanks

Louise Duhaime ,zone 3,is a tough zone ..im in zone 3-6..depends on the Norwegian coastal winters. But I usually try to find trees,bushes,and shrubs that are close to my zone.now I have a few Zone 7 plants that actually thrives too,but they get some frost damage from time to time,or as I call it natural pruning..haha.. no its not easy to pin down the right plants for a certain plant always. But have in mind ,you can have several zones in your garden,depending on the topography,sheltered areas,wind etc.. so even if a plant is good for a certain zone it can go both ways,just because its been planted on the wrong spot,or had wrong soil etc

the most important tip for growing oakleaf hydrangeas is to put them in a place where they can be allowed to grow to full size so that you never have to prune them, because most people who prune them end up cutting off the following season's buds.

I love your channel!! You give great tips! A question.. I live in the netherlands, its around 15degrees overday with most of the time rain in fall. Can I plant any new plants in my garden around this time of year? Would the plant survive it through winter?
@ThorKipperberg7 жыл бұрын
Ebru Canak hi there,yes but don't wait to long.the winter is just around the corner.. if you decide to plant now,be sure to give the plant enough protection around the rootball,soil,leaves etc. Since its fall,it wont grow much now,but if the winter is mild in your area it should be enough time for the plant to develope roots,if not its better to wait to plant either dormant plants in January/February,and let them be until spring.or just plant as usual in April/May..it's always a gamble to plant anything in late fall,due to sudden drops in temperature or sudden frost spells,that could potentially be harmful or kill the plants you put out. As long as the temp keeps mild and almost summery,you can plant out what you got.

Laura pleeeeease have a go at another layered bulb pot! I want to know how to protect outdoor pots from frost and I saw that your first trial inspired by Monty Don failed because of a cold snap. I want to have a pot with tulips, daffodils and crocus but I want to know the best ways to insulate an outdoor pot. Or just do a video on tulip planting because I need my bulb fix! :)
@ThorKipperberg7 жыл бұрын
beseggg there are several ways to insulate a pot from tge elements.. to plant normal winter hardy flowering bulbs,you really don't need much protection,exept from rain and wet weather. Rain and frost is a huge bulb killer in many cases ,especially if it rains for several days/weeks and then it freeze over. Before it has dried up. So here is a few tips from me.1. Plant the bulbs in a container/pot and dig the whole thing with bulbs and all down in the ground,and leave it there until early spring.2 set the container,inside a garage or other frost free enviroment,under a roof,or near a wall so its not being harmed by the elements. 3 cover your container with an old blanket or make a box of Styrofoam,fill the box with leaves around your pot. 4.plant your bulbs inside,in the pot/container,and set it cold,wait until february/march and give it water and let the bulbs start inside once they have started to grow set the whole thing ouside but a little bit protected,dont overwater! Bulbs are not hard to grow in containers,but they need some care,fertilizer and some occasional watering.
@beseggg6 жыл бұрын
how did i miss your awesome reply! i turned my balcony into a sun room so no rain or extreme cold, planted the pot with the same fertilizer that laura uses and some beautiful bulbs, covered it with a blanket and i'm forgetting it till my birthday on 8th of march :)
