Happy to see an active speaker getting some love! DSP multiamping and calibrated measurements took my DIY man-loft system from nice to nirvana. 3(+)-way systems have many advantages but present major challenges to filtering passively while maintaining good phase response. Active presents powerful and affordable optimization tools to the designer, and I believe is the wave of the future.

@ryanchappell5962
@ryanchappell5962 5 ай бұрын
@@miguelalonsoperez5609 In this case I used a modified bookshelf for the tweeter and midrange. It’s a 1 inch tweeter, 5 inch midrange and then I have a pair of small 8inch subwoofers and one mono 12 inch. So it’s basically a stereo 3 way and sub. I use dsp that has 8 outputs. I’m using 8th order crossovers and PEQ filters as well as some delays for precise time alignment. I didn’t actually build anything, just bypassed the internals of some off the shelf products. The powered subs are not modified, just used the LFE input to bypass the crossover on the sub. I didn’t use a tower speaker in this setup because it’s more of a stealth setup.

It’s good to see the sub $1000 list Erin. I suspect this is really the sweet spot for many of us when it comes to price to performance. hey thillyard, sub $1000 is the only price range for bookshelf speakers (at least for me), so it was great to get Erin's input on that. Above a grand, I look beyond the bookshelf speaker mentality, but that's just me. That said, it looks like "the next" price range would be from about 3k to under 10k (7k?) .. I don't know if at this higher price category that it gets easier or harder to do.. at some point, it's got to be harder because of the additional difficulty for Erin to coordinate such an endeavor largely due to size, cost, and liability constraints..😉

I talked to them about it when I did my original review. If you do the math for a 9kHz wave the first half-wave (cancellation) is at 0.75” which is in line with the physical dimension from the center of the center to the pice of the former that sticks out. And that piece sticks up a good bit.

I would put the KEF Q350 on the list, it is similar to the Q150 for almost the same price but less compromised in the bass region due to the bigger 165 mm driver (vs. 130 mm). For the KEF Q350 bass performance I just posted a little trick in Amir's review on Audio Science Review (page 27). If the bass is well balanced but not deep with the port closed and too boomy with the port open or half open you can try to extend the bassreflex tunnel by about 14cm to lower the port tuning frequency. This may give you a surprisingly deep and balanced bass extension. Of course the result is very room dependent. Details and in room measurements can be found in my Audio Science Review post. One can easily build it from a piece of slotted pipe isolation from the hardware store in a few minutes (if you don't care how the back of the speaker actually looks like) to give it a try.

Both really good speakers, but many people (including me) prefer the Q150 to the 350. 150 being more clear, balanced and with a better soundstage. 350s may have an edge in larger rooms tho; I listen to the 150s from about 10 ft in a 15x15 ft room and they fill the room easily. I compared the 150s to my beloved classic large Advents in a much larger room, and the KEFs could not keep up.

I suggested Erin to review the KEF Q350 before too. Here in the EU they are as you say almost the same price as the Q150 (in the US, I think the difference is significantly larger though, and I think that's why they are not on Erin's radar). I have a pair and they are fantastic with EQ. They are too warm and muddy for me in the lower midrange default. But EQ'ed they play down to 35 Hz in my small room at adequate SPL to satisfy me.

Not sure how you can recommend a powered speaker in a group of passive speakers without address the extra challenges of using a powered speaker with traditional home audio and video sources plus the complexity of integrating a subwoofer.
@bbfoto7248
@bbfoto7248 5 ай бұрын
Not really a major issue, IMO. Not everyone already has or wants/needs a full traditional home audio component setup with multiple audio and video source components. In addition, these types of active studio monitors might be considered as a purchase for a Secondary System in a home office or bedroom, or music for a small restaurant, gym, etc. For example, Yes, my main 2-channel rig uses traditional separate HiFi components and multiple separate audio & video sources with passive loudspeakers. But in my casual listening setup for my bedroom, I am using a pair of the active KALI Audio IN-8 2nd Wave studio monitors connected directly to an iFi ZEN Blue v2 Bluetooth receiver. Simple and Easy Peasy. For this type of use case scenario and/or for a smaller desktop setup, active studio monitors are often the simplest and best solution. In addition, KALI Audio and most other Active Studio Monitor Manufacturers also offer a few different subwoofers that are designed to match with and connect to their main studio monitors and provide both the LPF for the sub as well as a corresponding HPF with preouts for the main monitors. There are also traditional home stereo or home theater subs with these types of features and connections if you check before purchasing. It's really not all that difficult if you do some research. Erin's decision to include active studio monitors as a recommendation actually help to provide more options for a wider audience of people that might not all have the same use case scenario.

I like the WiiM Amp as long as you don’t need a boatload of power. For most rooms at 10 feet away it should be “adequate” but it won’t rock your socks off if you listen really loudly. This NAD C 268 is a solid amp that I’ve had good luck recommending as well: howl.me/clfZeNZfiWG

Thanks for the suggestion Erin! One follow up question. I do watch movies at loud volume. Currently have paired dbr62 with svs 3000 micro and have set the cross over at 80. Now that subwoofer is taking off some load, do you think wimm amp will be sufficient? Or going for nad c268 will still make a difference irrespective of having a sub? Thanks in advance.

Have to disagree about the r200 not having enough bass, I had a neighbour complain they can feel vibrations through the wall, they have too much bass infact I always have to eq down the bass because it just eats up the room, so be warned that this is not good near walls or medium or smaller sized rooms, i remedied this by putting huge blocks of foam behind them to suck up the bass frequencies and still running them on -3db bass

@dnd6379 Bass, OR MIDbass?
@dnd6379
@dnd6379 5 ай бұрын
@@bbfoto7248 subbass, I dont think midbass would vibrate my neighbours room while I didn't even have them that loud. There was more bass in their room than in mine, the bass just eats through the walls, and these are eu thick brick walls. I also heard the really low rumble from everywhere in the apartment. It similar but less volume to the 10" svs subwoofer I heard (it rattled the door handle and the doors with that sub). You can feel that the speakers woofer is moving the air in the room instantly when you hear it (it's like the pressure changes), I can't believe myself they got this amount of bass. I can feel it vibrate the bed sheets when I'm laying down and up the volume. This is subwoofer level of bass. And when you put them where they are the most happy which is super loud the body vibrates/pulses from the bass. Do note I do have thick foam blocks around the room in the corners as well as on walls but they do nothing when it comes to sub bass. What did help is either moving them closer to the middle of the room or putting blocks of foam directly behind them (10cm thick foam). Also ratchet & clank rift apart has so much bass, more than any game i've heard.

Elac DBR62 is legit, you could run those as L/C/R in most a surround rigs without issue. As good as the lower tier Elac debut 6.2 is, the DBR is head and shoulders better. IMO it's better than the bottom two Revel books using the same size woofer, certainly for the $$.

I use Yamaha HS8 and I'm happy with them (before that I used HS5, and before that KRK Rokit8). But, wanna upgrade to bigger cabinets (12" or 15" woofers) when I have money. I'd love to see you review Yamaha DZR12 or DZR15... I know they're a PA, but wanna see their data results as a HiFi/home speaker (yes, its' unintended use). It may be a good alternative and a poorman's JBL L100 Classic or Klipsch Forte/Cornwall. I hear nothing but good things about them - the most neutral PA ever, super clear, detailed, accurate, not shrill/harsh like typical PAs, very pleasing sound, nice tone, etc.

I currently run KEF Q150s for my 2.1 desktop pc setup, paired with the Dayton HTA 200 tube amp. I just ordered a pair of Polk Audio Reserve R200s to replace KEF Q150s, which I'll use for my 2nd desktop setup. Will the Polk's be a noticeable upgrade over the KEFs?

Curious about your thoughts regarding the KEF Q350 vs the 150. I hear some people rate them lower and even say that the extra size doesn't contribute to a meaningful increase in bass extension over the smaller speakers, or that the 350 aren't worth the extra money over the 150. Both models tend to go on discount at the same time (although recently I've seen more sales for the 150 than the 350, for whatever reason), and at sale price they're like $100 apart per pair which isn't the worst.

@ErinsAudioCorner Excellent comparison. 👍 IMO one significant thing that I think should be noted about the KALI Audio IN-8 2nd Wave Studio Monitors (which also applies to most other active studio monitors), is that there are a good deal of frequency response shaping controls on the back panel of each speaker that can help to balance the response in your room depending on speaker placement and/or the acoustics of your particular room, as well as personal preference. I'm using the KALI IN-8 v2 in my "casual listening" bedroom setup combined with an iFi ZEN Blue v2 Bluetooth receiver and taking advantage of its LDAC codec 900/990kbps high quality wireless streaming. With my limited placement options for these speakers in the bedroom, those tonality-shaping controls made it very easy to balance the in-room response without having to resort to additional EQ in my playback source. For most setups like this, and/or smaller rooms, I would even say that KALI IN-5 2nd Wave is the better option AND value, as it's a bit smaller but doesn't give up much on the low end extension or in overall output capability (see Erin's reviews for both). If you really want those lowest octaves from 20-40Hz with authority, you'll want a subwoofer either way. But in my particular use case scenario, I don't feel the need for a subwoofer at all, and I think the smaller KALI IN-5 v2 would've been the better choice because I ended up switching the bass response down on the IN-8. I'm a drummer, and good kickdrum/bass drum reproduction with realistic impact & dynamics is important to me, along with realistic upright acoustic bass and electric bass guitar playing their lowest notes. The Kali IN-8 v2 have no problem bringing a smile to my face in this regard. Cheers

Wow, this review supports "for me anyway" that (very good, not excellent mind you) speakers can be had for below $1,000. As for me, based on downsizing to a smaller place I sold off my complete $10K system and replaced it with an approximate $550 integrated amp and the Elac dbr62's. This system provided me 80ish% the refinement, but 95%/ 100% overall listening pleasure to my previous system (maybe this is because of my room, or I'm getting easier to please?!?)

Hey, first time here. Appreciate this. Not only is this price range "Goldilocks", but I like those graphs and objective measurements. Yes, beauty, taste, etc is all subjective, but nothing like hard data to back up the subjective feelings. Like measuring out the amount of sugar in soft drinks, for example. I'm surprised the Kali can both perform well in sound, plus be powered, at that price. Buying an external amp can easily be another $1,000 (Goldilocks range again). How do they do it? Unless all the other manufacturers are just making fatter margins.

enjoy your review . However , for the Kali speaker, I was shocked once seeing the construction, after I go through some other utuber review to see & compare , it's far below the sound quality vs the instrument review. That truly lead me to believe measurements could not fully reflect quality of sound (some a great difference). Best to hear it in person,instead of what others may suggested.
