This part is a housing of steering rack and normally produced by die-casting. Why do you utilize the CNC machining process?

The Formula SAE Team want's us to machine the part with 6061 Aluminum.

Obviously for a one-off like this, CNC is faster and cheaper then die casting.

I don’t get it honestly… why not machine the 3 pieces and connect by weld with tubes. 5 axis doesn’t mean higher precision necessarily… deflection over that cutter length for instance. this is a flashy part, that takes money from a limited budget… 6061 is weldable as far as I know!? pls change my mind. I’d love insight!

There's no right or wrong in the process, We just use the method we are good at, Yes you can tig weld 6061 aluminum.
