In today’s video, I’ve brought in a Major League catcher, Ryan Lavarnway, who’s going to share with you 5 baseball catching drills to improve your footwork and throwing!
The first drill is the Exchange Drill. With this drill you’re going to start on both knees. When you catch the ball, turn your glove and reach into it to grab the baseball. From there, pull your arm to your throwing position. Make sure you practice catching and making an exchange from different locations.
The next drill is called the Shortstop Drill. This is a footwork drill where we’re going to emulate middle infielders. The biggest key to being quick is anticipation. Try to gain an extra advantage by anticipating and manipulating your body to get closer to your power throwing position while the ball is on the way.
Now let’s work on Dry Footwork. We’re taking your hands out of the equation in this drill. Get into your athletic stance, then go through the footwork and make sure the direction is lined up towards second base. Don’t worry about the transfer for this drill.
The next drill is the High Flip or Curveball Drill. This drill does not involve throwing and taxing your arm. Throwing a runner out on a curveball is tough because you see the runner taking off, but since it’s an off speed pitch you need to wait just a click longer. This drill simulates waiting back before taking off like an airplane, not a helicopter.
One of the most fundamental throwing and footwork drills you can do as a catcher is the T-Drill. This is one of the most widely used, accepted, and productive drills you can do as a catcher. Tape off the letter “T” or draw a “T” in the dirt. The idea is to center yourself in the middle of the tee. Get into your action stance with the ball in your glove. Do your footwork like you’re throwing a runner out at second and use the “T” as a point of reference. Make sure you’re aligned with your target.

Excellent video. Footwork is so important at the catching position, and too many catchers don't practice the drills that were shown. I'm from the old school in that I believe in catching the ball first and getting the strike for the pitcher and the throwing, especially at the youth and high school levels, given the probability of runners caught stealing is probably 30% or less. Some of that may be from pitchers not knowing how to hold runners close, in which case the stolen base is on the pitcher more than the catcher.

Good stuff. My 9 year old plays catcher for his Little League team. He's very mobile, has good hands and it vigilant about stopping passed balls. BUT - he has generally weak and inconsistent throws. Looking forward to folding these drills into his regimen and watching the catcher's workshop.

Ultimate Baseball Training Liking the workshop very much, thank you! The concepts presented are advanced and refined for a nine year old. For example, we practice framing, but to be honest, in his games it’s more about stopping passed balls as much as possible rather than keeping strikes strikes. That said, these concepts and drills will definitely give him a leg up when he advances a level next season. Thank you, again.

Awesome! So glad to hear you're enjoying it! I can see how a few of the concepts may be advanced for his age, but I think it's definitely better to be over prepared than under prepared! This catching training will be a great resource for him as he progresses throughout his career

@@UltimateBaseballTraining Toastmasters is a worldwide organization and in every language where you attend to do speeches and improve your public speaking skills. One of the things they talk about is using your hand gestures with purpose. A name that comes to mind about somebody who doesn't and is all over the place with his hands is Donald Trump. He says that's how he exercises lol. He's crazy lol. Some people are natural, like you. By the way, I used to play Minor League as a catcher out of the DR. I wished I would've have access to these videos when I was growing up but then again, back on the island I didn't have access to the internet. Ouch! Great video.

These are interesting ideas, granted.... lots of talk, not as much actual demonstration. Would have strongly preferred two side angles, head-on, umpire view of each drill with voice over. In other words, demonstrating the skill and drill while talking it through.

The drills you need are in your brain. Not in repetitive nonsense. Think about it, and you will make the best decisions. The only thing you said that's worthwhile is acting like a shortstop. Here's the simple shit to being a good catcher: practice finding the seams when you play catch so you can always throw a 4 seam fastball without thinking. If you throw overhand, that will keep your throw from tailing.Work on catching the ball at the point where it most looks like a strike, and in the case where the runner is stealing, try to move into the throw without rising up and blocking the umps view. Learn how each pitch reacts when it hits the dirt and react accordingly. For example, fastballs stay low when bounced, and curves bounce higher and left when thrown by a right-hander. Stop pitches like an infielder, not like dumbass catching coaches preach. Is the best way for a shortstop to stop a shorthop line drive to drop to his knees and block it with his chest or stomach? Hell no. Think like a middle infielder when catching. Try to catch the ball in a way that sets up your throw. Lastly, I think there are some old videos of World Series games on KZbin where you can watch Johnny Bench or Rick Dempsey. Compare what they do to what your dumbass coaches are saying. Good luck!
