I was always multitasking when raising my children, and once they were grown, I started finding Zen in doing one thing at a time and kind of meditating and being purposeful with each thing that I did. Now that I’m raising my four grandchildren, I do need to multitask on a few things, but I’m trying to instill in them about living in the moment and finding joy in daily tasks and not being afraid to experiment with new things. That failure is only an opportunity to play again.

Not only do I feel more connected and more grounded, but I am also able to receive clear moments of insight and inspiration from something greater than me. Moving to the French countryside from the U.S, was the best BIG move I made for a slower lifestyle but also just making small habit changes like setting time limits on devices, opting for paper instead of screens, trusting in some sort of divine timing and remembering that it is the small steps that lead to true fulfillment and peace from within.

I'm sixteen and doing college, so I often find it hard to slow down and reset, especially since I have anxiety and I'm a workaholic so I always want to do something productive. Then, when I began watching your videos about a year ago now, I think, I realized that I can be productive in ways that are different from coursework. So, I've began gardening with a passion, I have a little potted plant in my basement bedroom (he is a lowlight so no worries there!), and it really has changed how I view things. I write a lot, including three books which still need to be edited, and what's weird is, I find I don't have my creativity flowing as much as I do when I'm outside in nature, sitting by the creek that flows through my property, listening to the bubbling of it and the birds singing, the foxes running through the grass and the cows mooing at the farm just beyond my property line. So instead of carrying a laptop out there, which would be dangerous in itself, I carry a single notebook, and just write for hours on end. It's amazing how much you can get done in a short span of time when you enjoy what you do and you have taken time out of your day to do so, not focusing on other deadlines that are weeks or even months away. So thank you, Niamh, you are like a little faerie spreading more love and bringing those into the faerie lifestyle!

I was forced to slow down following a stroke when my carotid artery split sending a clot to my brain. I had another two months later. That was three years ago. For the first year I was virtually house bound. Slowly I had to learn to pace myself. I can now enjoy the garden as long as it isn’t to heavy work. I now do a lot of container gardening and I find it so rewarding. I can kneel down and weed beds it is walking I find difficult. At the allotment I can spend the whole day there pottering and brewing up in the shed and enjoying my brew sat on the bench. It has made me slow down and at the same time made me appreciate everything I do. I have become so thankful for what I have. I struggle with conversation with a few people as since my stroke I struggle with processing things. I am blessed that my friends are nurses and understand giving me time. Thanks you for your always inspiring videos!

Thank you so much. This video calms me down. I feel so relaxed after it. These days, some new things appear in my life: minimalism, slow living, good food and healthy relationship with others and myself. This is so perfect to slow down in this speeding up world.

Agreed. Today I vacuumed. I changed out the tablecloth. I took a shower. I arranged my 1 tomato and cucumber plant for planting (tomorrow! this is an experiment). Then I sit. (I need to find a job soon but I'm letting God take care of that for just a bit of time). Thank you.

I love slow living, I have always felt a strong desire for this, and was unhappy in my business once I moved to the woods in my small house, it took me a couple of years to appreciate the new slowness to my life, now I absolutely love it; Anne in PEI

Hi Simone, Ah yes the cuttings always take very well... I do this often... the other way is taking the tiny bulb section out with the stem... works even better and is quicker...

We have found the same. We have grown butternut and pumpkin from seeds from our kitchen scraps. My wife has made the kids cuddly toys from her material scraps. Characters they love that you can't actually buy in the shops. My children have made themselves top trumps cards and made their own boards games. I have built a decking out of pallets I had lying around. And built a windchime out of a fallen piece of Oak we carried home from our walk, and some old galvanised copper pipe I had lying around. We can't go back to our old life, we are planning major changes. I have been a minimalist for a longtime. But this forced break has really let me connect with my values and who I actually am.

I am attempting a garden again this year and I admit I not patient with it! Mine did well for years but in the past few the best growing comes from Compost bin escapees! But keep on trying, because producing food from seeds makes me happy !

We can be hard on ourselves for not being as slow as we think we should be... when I worked in the hospital, the nurses that were running here and there actually got less done than the ones who were slower... sometimes it can be about know your priorities and leaving the rest.

I am forced to live slowly with my chronic illness (severe M.E.). I am mostly bedbound. I'm not able to cook, garden, do house chores myself. My mum and my partner both help to look after me. It took quite a few years to be 'at peace' with this situation, and there will always be times when it gets to you. I wouldn't wish this illness on anyone but the part I'm grateful for is that I can't run around and be frantically achieving anymore. I was always on the go, which wasn't good. Being forced to step back gives me the time to really think about things and exist on a different level. It's given me the chance to work on mental health issues. While my body is very unwell, my mental health is at the best it's ever been. I've had to be flexible about hobbies and interests - giving up a great many, but finding lots of new ones I wouldn't have considered in the past. All things I can do from my bed. I love arts and crafts and there are so many to choose from - depending on my energy levels and other symptoms, I have things I can dip into. My mum has re-taught me knitting. It will take me a long time to make blankets but I love having something to chip away at and I'll feel such a sense of joy when I complete my projects. When we move into a new house soon, I'll finally have an easily accessible outdoor space to spend time in. I'll get my partner to make it very wildlife friendly (he loves wildlife too) and we can sit and enjoy it together. I want picnics in the garden to become a thing :)

So much truth and insight to everything you said! Especially the part about learning as you go really resonated with me. Just before watching this video I was thinking about whether I should look up a recipe for the ground elder leaves I have collected (which my old self would have done without a doubt, terrifed of getting it "wrong"). I find, however, that it actually makes me feel less stressed to not follow a recipe and just trust my own capabilities and intuition instead. I think there's something rather empowering and calming in cultivating that kind of trust in yourself. Thank you for yet another lovely and calming video! With love from Sweden

I can't imagine who this video is for during such a desperate time as this. Where I live, miles of cars line up daily for food banks to open, and many hungry families are turned away at the end of the day. Renters are being evicted out onto the streets, and acres of food are being plowed under because supply chains cannot divert from restaurants to the private sector. People are choosing to die alone at home from heart attacks etc, because they are afraid to go to the hospital. My heart bleeds for all those who are suffering such desperation. Though I live alone in the woods in my seventies, I cannot relate to all this focus on self.

I think the point is to try to find some peace where we are right now. Growing food only helps in this bad situation. Being locked down, there isn't much we can do, but try to care for those immediately around us and stay safe (and as peaceful and happy as possible).
@AdrianaOrtiz-ff7mx4 жыл бұрын
I completely understand what you mean and I have been struggling to watch Niamhs videos all the way through lately because of it, which is a real shame since they’re normally a place for me to go when I need some peace. As an “essential worker” in Florida, I never had the luxury of being told to stay home. I’m out working six days a week with dozens of customers and coworkers a day who truly do not care about the wellbeing of my immunocompromised boyfriend and I and are not ashamed of it. While my situation isn’t nearly as dark as the one you’ve described, it’s still the hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through. I love my job but now I’m suffering panic attacks the 30+ hours a week that I’m forced to be there, plus countless hours ruminating about every moment that could have been THE infection moment before and after my shifts. Daily I have to fight to prevent infecting myself and hospitalizing or killing my boyfriend, all to pay some bills. I haven’t gone to bed without drinking in weeks. So to come here and hear things like “since were all at home and have all the time in the world now” it’s like, could you not bring that up? I know she didn’t explicitly say that in this video (well I’m only halfway through but assuming she doesn’t) it’s still clearly a product of quarantine. And like I’m happy she’s home and safe as well as so much of the world, truly I am. But like. I just want a safe place to escape to and this channel used to be that for me and it sucks. And I feel so mean saying this but honestly I’m so glad someone else finally said something. Maybe we’re the only two bitter ones out there though, I hope so. And Niamh if you see this, please understand I mean absolutely no ill will. It’s just that I think the people who need your sense of tranquility right now are also the ones who don’t have the option to create that sense of peace on their own, who aren’t in a similar position to you.
@FairylandCottage4 жыл бұрын
I totally respect what you're saying... I would not be able to get out of bed if I focused on all the suffering that goes on in the world today and everyday. I am going to be of no help to anyone if I don't keep my mental and physical health.

Thanks for sharing your perspective Adriana. I hear you and I'm sorry you are suffering. I am here if you every need to vent and everyone else is too. i think going slower in life has made the biggest impact on me relationship-wise. actually slowing down your own thoughts and your desire to reply and talk about yourself during conversations and instead truly listening and trying to understand the other person makes every moment with them so much more worthwhile, and adds so much depth to your bond with them. i no longer get bored or irritated with people as easily, which was an ugly feeling beforehand, especially if they're people i love.
