my tip is to send in a physical portfolio. make it really large, bigger than any garbage can in a normal office, and heavy, so they can't throw it away

I love these series!! Although I would like to see more portfolios for a job application, like for architects with with different years of experience. Keep up the great work guys!!!
@LearnUpstairs Жыл бұрын
Thanks @mrmerchant ! Appreciate the suggestion and we'll certainly think about this for future episodes. Although I don't think experienced architects with many many years of career really put portfolios together anymore... I feel that the way you present your skills changes, so this might be an interesting topic to tackle in the future.

This is amazing! I really appreciate videos like this, it's amazing to see the different creative ideas, thanks for the video. I have a bit of an unusual question, I graduated about 10 years ago and haven't been able to land a job where I live due to different reasons. But I would like to make a portfolio. I feel like I would basically be starting from scratch since I don't feel like the projects I did when I was in school from 2009-2013 reflect my current design skills and thinking process. So in this case because I would like to start with something new, what kind of projects do you recommend I include, keeping in mind that these would have to be mostly made up projects? Thanks so much
@LearnUpstairs9 ай бұрын
Thanks a lot for the feedback! Much appreciated! Now in terms of the new projects you’ll include in the portfolio, that is totally up to you! You need to think about the professional areas you want to apply to. For example, if you’re leaning more towards interiors, then include more of them. Or if you want to apply for a job on a firm that mostly do upper class house design, then you need to show that you can also do that. Since you’re starting again from scratch, think about projects that represent you now, but also show to a potential employer the type of work you want to be doing. There are numerous ways to tackle this challenge. But if I were in your position, that’s where I’d start. I hope that helps! 😁

Hi, your videos are always so beautiful. May I ask which light and microphone you use? Have a lovely day!
@LearnUpstairs Жыл бұрын
Thanks!! In this video, we were on an Airbnb without any of our lighting gear and limited filming equipment. So we used the large window as the main source of light at a 45 angle so that it didn't create reflections on my glasses. Then for the microphone, both of us had a 20$ dollar lav mic attached to our phones that were in our pockets. We then synced up the audio in post. I also use a Sennheiser MKE 400 as the main microphone when I'm recording in my studio or even a Blue Yeti mic for voice-overs. For the camera, I just upgraded to a Sony A7C, but in the past, I had a Sony ZV-1 which is plenty good and really handy! Steven is using a Sony A6600 if I'm not mistaken. Oh and for the lighting in my studio, I've got an Aputure 100d with a small dome. I hope that covers everything in terms of equipment! I'm no expert in this, so I'm always learning about how to use this equipment and how to upgrade this filming setup without spending too much.

Sure these are great, but honestly - which student has renders, models, drawing that look this amazing? Mine certainly don't. This is quite discouraging actually. I'd be more curious to learn how to present and arrange contents that aren't all that sleak and nice. Or maybe improve old, rough drawings from the first semesters.

Would you ever do a review of first year portfolio’s?
@LearnUpstairs Жыл бұрын
That would be interesting for sure! However, we try to focus on portfolios that will add value to the most amount of people. Most likely a first-year portfolio will suck, and that's fine! That's part of the process. I feel you shouldn't give too much pressure on that first try because even the projects you have aren't that developed to be creating an interesting portfolio. But I'll keep that idea for our future meetings, and maybe we can slip one or two first-year portfolios.

@LearnUpstairs Жыл бұрын
Thanks!! Idk which model Steven has. I usually shop for mine at local stores here in Brazil. Brands I like a lot are Livo and Zerezes. But I believe the ones I'm using in this video are from Chilli Beans, and it also has a sunglass attachment that goes on top using magnets
