I can't begin to tall you, and everyone who reads this, how much your videos help me. I have been playing for over 30 years, ànd thought I was doing ok. Now am in my mid 50's and still love playing. Going to the rink I still get the belly 🦋. Finding your videos and actually doing the work, for the most part, changed my game. I move better, get to where I need to be faster, and just feel gooder, (yes its a word. At least in the East Coast of Canada), physically after a game.

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave this comment - put a big smile on my face! My mission is to make you the "gooder-est" goalie out there!! And thank YOU for actually doing the work. Nothing happens until goalies decide to take action.

Struggling with staying on my feet by the end of the ice training session😅😅😅 as a novice goalie I feel that these exercises are exactly what I need!! Last ice my coach told me I have to improve my goalie stick play, to use throwing out of the stick more often etc., but I told him to wait until I know how to skate better and not dying by the end of the session)) these are my must-have eveyday exercises from today on, thanks!!

Very timely video, as here in the Netherlands we are locked down until mid Jan... so need something to keep the fitness level up. Anyway, 45 years old beginner here, with good hand eye coordination (played plenty of racket sports and play golf at a decent level). Personally I have no problem catching the puck or blocking (as long as I'm set on time). I struggle with lateral movements, I understand the tactic and where I should be, I just don't get there fast enough or I lose my balance in the process so get late on the next move.The other thing I struggle with is over active glove hand, trying to get at the puck when I should be using my blocker or my stick. I guess I need to give all that time, to get stronger, and learn the right movement patterns. I've been goal tending for just 2 month :-)
@goalietraining2 жыл бұрын
That is good timing and I think these things will help you find more speed to beat the shot. Sorry to hear you are locked down again - I suspect we may be in the same boat soon. Merry Christmas to you!

Thanks! I think that video would be better left to an on-ice goalie coach. I am a strength coach, so my expertise is off the ice training. But here's what I do as a beginner/intermediate goalie who is a bit of a geek. I pretend my goalie stick is a light-sabre and I keep that light-sabre pointed at the puck all the time :)

Maria thank you so much, not only for this, but for all your videos! I just turned 45, never skated before, and I’m starting with Learn to Skate at the Panthers practice facility. But I’m trying to lay down a foundation of goalie-specific fitness before I start Learn to Play. Your videos have already been a huge help and I can’t tell you how much you’re appreciated by all of us! Apologies if I missed this, but what is the cadence for this workout? Being bodyweight, is this something we should do every day as beginners, or every couple/few days?
@goalietraining2 жыл бұрын
You are most welcome - happy to help and I love your approach to starting as a goaltender. Work on your skating, prepare your body, then become a goalie. This isn't really meant to be a 'workout', but rather 5 of my favourite bodyweight exercises you can add to your off-ice training. If you want some short complete workouts - check out the "10 Secret Habits of Pro Goalies" playlist on my channel.

My biggest current issue is staying in a low stance when a player is coming in at slow pace. Which in my old-timer league is all the time. What can we do to help stay in this low stance. I use to be able to stay low, but currently fall to my knees when a player is in tight and when they make a move, I can't recover. Thanks for the channel your awesome.
@goalietraining2 жыл бұрын
Do you mean that you don't have the patience to wait for them to make the move before you butterfly? Or do you mean that you actually fall onto your knees when you try to get low?

I’m a taller and thinner 53 yr old dude, only been in goal for about two yrs now, and am not having so much of an issue with leg strength, but more so with low back tightness after games. You know, you get done with one of those (not so) awesome 11:30 pm games, you lay down to get some sleep and your low back just aches. You can’t get to sleep because you’re always shifting and trying to stretch out the low back. How do I get the low back in ‘goalie shape’?? Thanks much!
@goalietraining2 жыл бұрын
It really depends on your stance, how you use your hips, etc. But typically if your lower back is over fatigued, it's because you are using your lower back to help with movements that it shouldn't really be working on - so that could be using your glutes effectively, using your abdominal muscles properly. The key to all things is doing a proper off-ice training program. If it is more than fatigue/ache, then I would get it checked by a physiotherapist.
@a47mlb2 жыл бұрын
@@goalietraining Thanks for that, Maria. Being taller and fairly lean, I assume I have more of a 'lever' that can cause more strain of the lower back. I'll work on the glutes and abs more. Great tip!!
@goalietraining2 жыл бұрын
@@a47mlb could be, but without an assessment by a sport physio, you will just have to take a trial and error approach, but if you aren't doing anything to prepare your body for the demands of the position - starting something (like the Butterfly Challenges) is probably a good option.

when fatigue sets in, I tend to fall forward when when dropping into my butterfly. Also much stronger pushing, standing, sliding to one side than the other. Bad habit of dropping my glove hand too low.
@goalietraining2 жыл бұрын
I drop my glove hand too - so frustrating. I spend a lot of deliberate practice working on my 'weak' side - but just like you, it still doesn't feel as strong or as efficient. Thanks for your feedback.

@goalietraining2 жыл бұрын
It is tough - I think positioning plays a big role there (and some luck too). You can do some hand-eye work with a 'reaction ball' that bounces in a less predictable way, so you have to respond a little quicker.
