It's not underrated. It's just that paladin tend to forget their spellcast due to being a melee fighter (unless it's a healing spell or smite).

I actually used Compelled Duel with my paladin about a month ago. I remember our party was concerned about my character (I was an Aasimar, and the rest were more regular races, and we were trying to be inconspicuous at the time as we were being hunted by the guards of the city). I needed a disguise. So, we hid in the basement of a bakery, and I casted Compelled Duel on a guard inside the bakery. He came into the basement, searching for my character, and the other party members used a bunch of buffs on my character so they didn’t break the enchantment on the guard. Because of the buffs, my character was almost untouchable, and the guard had no choice but to fight me. One of the other party members cast some sort of spell that made the area silent as well, so we didn’t alert the bakery patrons. Long story short, my character got a shiny suit of guardsmen’s armor, and I never had to worry about getting detected again.

@@pyro-toxin5102 ... yeeeah, when people are left like that, they often die from one thing or another but *even* *if* *not*, at the kindest interpretation it's a rather brutal mugging with a guard as a loose end that will likely tell his buds that some jackass out there is going to be impersonating a guard. Then all they need to do is come up with something simple to differentiate the guards - a rotating weekly call and response sign for example.

Hunters Mark for vengeance. After 3 attacks the smite damage is often reached and potential for a lot more damage. Plus, I can always smite as well :)

Don't forget find steed. 2nd level spell that gives you a free mount. The mount is intelligent and gets it's own turn. Also any spell that targets only you can also target the mount if you want it to. So those smite spells can also be applied to the mount.

I'm new to D&d so are the players in my party. The other two players are Gnomes a monk and a sorcerer plus myself a half elf paladin who seems to be playing a healer and guy who takes every hit. I feel I took on a little too much for a horrible learner. I needed this video. I'm not one for subscribing but I think I will. Outside of the DM none of us had the chance to try D&d, so we made one. Screw the distance, time zones, and slight language barrier. We may be across three different continents [including our DM] all around the world, and it may not be the same easy but we are doing this. How is that not amazing.

My personal favorites: 1). Bless- adding a d4 to every attack and saving throw is just nice, makes everyone more reliable. Also gets better at higher levels what’s not to love! 2: sanctuary- combining this with an ally’s Bane can be NASTY if you want to deny enemy strikes. 3: Ceremony- this is just an amazing RP tool and restoration of alignment is crazy to me. Actually used it on myself and another player as part of our epilogue to marry our characters (I nat 20’d on a proposal check) 4: thunderous smite- makes a hilarious one off wake up call and was a fun go too signature spell for my boy Pelius the Blue Kobold.

I often use shield of faith to make it even harder for me to get hit, I have a shield and use a rapier and the defensive duelist feat so I can bump my ac up really high if they do hit

Bane is very powerfull as well. Up to three creatures of your choice that you can see within range must make Charisma saving throws. Whenever a target that fails this saving throw makes an attack roll or a saving throw before the spell ends, the target must roll a d4 and subtract the number rolled from the attack roll or saving throw.

Ceremony is a particularly good RP spell because of the versatility, limitations, and cost of the spell. I didn't notice the guys mentioning the 5 lbs of powdered silver consumed whenever you cast the spell. Probably not something you are lugging around while randomly exploring dungeons. This is a spell that you take time to prepare the component for and time to cast. Ceremony is very much a deliberate and purposeful spell. Good thing Paladins are prepared spellcasters so the spell only takes up a prepared slot when the Paladin will actually be casting it. If Paladins were known spellcasters, ceremony wouldn't be on this list.

So one thing I like to do is go 2 levels into paladin and then the rest into a casting class and my GM tends to think my character is fragile then I unload a fifth level smite into an enemy then the GM realizes that I can throw out more of them and have a high AC

First off i know these are [mostly] way to OP for items but the Dm gives these kinds of items out to every one. Now my question should i bring up to my DM that wile the items below are outstanding they are just not as us full to my control wizard as a rod of absorption or a ring of spell storing? or just ask him if he wants me to roll a different character? magic focus triple the die for each attack spell you cast magic ring (A) +2Ac by pass resistances but not immunities magic staff (A) +3 to hit with spells +2 die for any attack spell cast when attuned mask of disguise (A) [hat of disguise but in mask form]

Tbh, if you're trying to get maximum action economy at low levels, you have 1 of two options. Use bless, or use shield of faith. Most the time shield of faith, it's only a bonus action which means an attack on first turn with a nice extra 2 ac, so you'll be hit less to even need to do a con saving throw for your spell. All these other spells they have listed are arguably worse in battle. You're going to have a +2 on your con saves, holding a spell isn't going to last long. Either bless so everyone else and yourself can hit easier, and help saves. Or boost your own ac with shield of faith and smite anything else in particular that seems dangerous. 3 spell slots at the beginning, I wouldn't use them on command 🤔

So we needed to assassinate a king and I was playing a paladin with the noble background so I talked my way to getting an audience with the king and then used compelled duel spell so I could kill the king and get away with it on the grounds that it was a honorable duel even though the king had no combative abilities to speak of

Regicide is regicide. Honorable duel or not, the DM should have marked you as enemies of the state and had every resource at the nation's disposal to hunt you down like a dog. XD

Wrathful Smite is the best smite you can get at Tier 1. If it hits, the enemy has to burn an action to not be frightened, its not a free save like many other fear spells.

How about heroism. Bonus hp and can not be feared. For first tier, when your blocking the first 3-4 points of damage each round. It’s like having a shield up the dm has to break through. It like healing 3-4 hp every turn for free.

I love to play paladins as they are more than just hit and smite. Bless..... It works that one point makes that difference. Command..... Making the enemies go prone or disarm them or flee Sheild of Faith no more need to be said adding ac is just good Ceremony making holy water is a must And Heroism for the creature or party member can not be frighten. Its a useful spell.

so which is harder? convincing your now chaotic evil wizard he should let you turn him back to lawful good or getting your male barbarian to marry your male druid for +2 to AC for a few days? ah, we already know the answer. the barbarian will be happy to hug that big old shapeshifting teddy bear if it means he gets +2 AC. don't look now but I think even the paladin himself is looking at bob the wizard (despite that he's still most likely evil)
