Zappi customer.... unit failed for a known MCB issue within a week of installation and that was frustrating, felt like they were shipping out units that "might" fail and dealing with those that did rather than fixing them all upfront. But I always say it's how a company reacts that matters. Part was on site within 24 hours and the original installer was given the funding approval to get in and fix it next day. 48 hours later all done and running again and it hasn't skipped a beat in the last 14 months. Overall I'm happy with it and the solar integration has saved me so much money. Late April to September I have paid ZERO for recharge on My Tesla M3P with everything coming from the excess solar.

I have the Simpson and Partner for two reasons only. It looks amazing and just as important, it does not need a mobile signal (I do not get a cell signal at my house). Only Bluetooth and WiFi are used so I can monitor it from the house. I had to discount many other chargers because they stated that they require a mobile signal to supply operating information.

Owning a Zappi has been brilliant for me. It works so well with my solar panels and batteries, charging the car instead of exporting, yet still allowing me to charge the car when I want to. Their service has been brilliant throughout - I had an issue with the front screen after 4 years of use, (Mark 1 version), and then sent me (free) a complete replacement front. If you have solar generation, I would definitely recommend this charger.

The thing that frustrates me no end is that I have, sat on my drive, a 77kWh battery, most of which gets used only for local trips up to 120 miles, and every few months a longer trip up to 500 miles (on a single charge.. yes!) but I still cannot get a charger in the UK that works to permit vehicle to home or vehicle to grid which with solar PV or off peak charging would just make so much sense. How long before these hit the walls of our houses?

@@EverydayLife621 I just plug it in and let it do it's thing. It will charge outside of the normal hours (at the cheap rate) if it feels like it. I actually have two zappis, the 2nd isn't controlled by octopus and we never have issues with the 2nd car charging. But without a compatible charger I wouldn't be able to be on intelligent go, and the tarrifs are not as good then.

I needed a compatible charger (which zappi is) in order to be able to access intelligent go, which means my overnight charging is 7p/kwh rather than 8.5p/kwh and lasts 6h rather than 5. I don't really care about the "intelligent" aspect, but without a compatible charger I would he paying more.

Probably the best way of getting onto Intelligent Octopus Go. Works much better than any EV integration and probably the best of the charge point integrations.

@@EverydayLife621 The point of Intelligent Octopus Go is that Octopus control when your car charges (rather than being just a fixed cheap period like most other EV tariffs). In order to do that they need to be able to control either the EV or the charge point. That's how they give the very cheap price - you can get well over 6 hours of cheap rate per day.

An essential criteria for me was the charger had to be compatible with Octopus Intelligent Go. One of the reason I chose a Ohme Pro charger, which has been fine so far. Easy to use, good app, decent support, and reliable. I was put off the Zappi by my next door neighbour's experience. He has had two units totally fail in 12 months. Both replaced swiftly by MyEnergi I must add.

I as a consumer have an Tesla Wallconnector Gen 2. Got it installed by an certified electrician, and it works great. Have it for almost 4 years and still looks great and works on 3 phase (11kW). It’s not a smart charger, but I always control it trough the app of with the car, which works fine for my use case. But it would be nice to have some more control.

I had a Zappi installed with a non functioning screen. It was fixed under warranty (Jan 2024), but not a good start. No problems since. There was instructions about not installing in direct sunlight (UV damage to plastic body, I assume). The unit does get the sun later in the day, so I cover it with a rucksack waterproof cover when not using it during the day.

One of the main areas that is not addressed by this video is the support for OCPP protocol integration and the ability to communicate to secondary systems by Wifi or Ethernet. This is now becoming more important to allow integration of a EV car charger into household systems eg Home Assistant

Does OCPP support mean that the charger doesn't need to access the manufacturer's server? I think depending on an internet connection to the manufacturer is a big problem if companies go bankrupt, or have outages or cyber-attacks. The apps should be able to talk directly to the devices over the local network, not use the cloud.

Very rare I watch a long KZbin like this in one go but found it so fascinating did this time. Only worry about the 'paid promotion' and hope it wasn't one of the charger companies which would spoil the comparison. I've had an Anderson 22kW since 1999 and it did worry me when they went into administration however I was told it would work without the app but (re one of the comments) perhaps that's wrong. Its never put a beat wrong over that five years and suerly thats what makes a good charger. What you dont want is any hassle with charging. A reliability chart would be good and perhaps a poll could be organised?

Yep they added API support for it not so long ago.....Zappi is best allrounder imo, also well established so not likely to suddenly go bust and leave customers in the lurch.

Octopus now support the cars directly, so you can use intelligent go if you have a compatible charger and/or a compatible EV. Which means you can use intelligent go with Tesla wallbox + model 3 because the model 3 is supported by octopus even if the wallbox is not.

If you have a Zappi or Ohme you can charge any car with IO. It makes much more sense to control chargers rather than cars. That way octopus get more coverage for less effort.

Being that proprietary in 2024 is ridiculous, it's always the old fashioned legacy brands too that refuse to modernise. Easee have an open API too, but octopus don't yet support them, however, octopus do support Tesla cars so I'm going to go with Easee because they're designed and made in Scandinavia and built very well. Plus I suspect they'll be added to octopus natively soon too. Myenergi products all look so old and outdated. It suits the 2013 Nissan leaf but looks out of place for other cars, unnecessarily large

I went with the Hypervolt 2 as it was the best there was at the time I had it fitted (2021). The Zappi was another option but I didn’t like the aesthetic of it. I understand the Hypervolt 3 is better with regards durability but the v2 is terrible. The white shell has went a yellow colour and the black holder for the charging cable has faded to gray. It’s all just very tired looking. Can’t fault the functionality. It’s just what was a pleasing looking unit when first fitted nos looks like an antique.

What about the security aspects? Can you lock the chargers so other people can’t use them? How good are the cyber-security capabilities of the manufacturers? Will you have an inoperable charger if the manufacturer is attacked?

An installer isn't going to know all the vulnerabilities of each product. If they did, they'd probably be manufacturing their own units. You can't expect an installer to know this.

@@mattblackledge9068 This is a video advising on which units to buy, and I personally think that the security features of the units would be an interesting thing to comment on. On the cyber-resiliency of the manufacturer's maybe not every installer will know this, but perhaps the ones putting out videos on which charger to pick should do some research? As the number of EVSEs and home battery systems increase, the security of kit that can connect to the grid will become increasingly important, I think. I can see a point where manufacturers offering cloud management capabilities that manage hundreds of installations will need to sign up to a recognised standard such as the SEC or CE+. G99 sign-offs in future might involve sharing the manufacturer's cyber attestations.

I went for the Andersen a2 based on aesthetics, if it’s on the front of my house it’s got to look good. In 3 years it broken twice but the internal core replaced both times under warranty. If it brakes again out of warranty I won’t replace it

No. All EV charge point installations require a pen fault protection device, whether it's built into the charge point or it's a separate unit.

Great video Jordan informative as ever! Its left me thumping my head hard though! I don't have an EV charger yet, but am currently remodeling the house, the sparky who did all the CU and wiring said 6mm swa cable, if I wanted to do some of the footwork myself! About a year ago after looking about online, I got some Doncaster EV ultra but I think it only has 2 core screened data cable! Is it worth taking that out and putting in a EV ultra with cat5 capabilitiy? I did think about purchasing just cat5 swa cable and running it in conjunction with the other already in place... but that would mean having 2 glands in the EV charger itself! Do any of the "New" EV's have room for that? I hoped to see this in the video, some looked really tight, does anyone have any thoughts on this... ?? Jordan is that even possible/ allowable? At the moment apart from the expense no harm done, but before the walls are plastered etc I'd really appreciate some thoughts/ guidance!

Most chargers have a mobile data sim, as does your smart meter. There are no contractual conditions nor mechanisms in place for any manufacture to bill consumers for mobile data.

The biggest issue with my energy quality I find is that every single zappi is different. The colour of connector blocks is always blue or green. Colour of lid washers are black or white and different. Now that sounds daft but it basically tells me they’re not using the same suppliers/it’s what ever is available and not streamlining the product. Love the charger but questionable on quality control!

My Zappi's been on Octopus Intelligent for almost a year and I waited for it to be officially supported (was supported as Alpha before that). Octopus list the main chargers that work with them.

The vast majority of us are not given a choice, as its usually sorted out by the car dealer / Lease company / your electric company. I was given an ohme pro (£600 installed, albeit it by bill n ben - but is does have an extra 'PEN' consumer unit + charger its self - I think it was a special offer, as you cant even buy it for the price): It just works every time (and yes I live in a very poor smart meter area/mobile phone signal, but it seems to work on text/2G) - I'm not sure what else is required, I just plug in and it will charge at cheap rate (or via solar), as per my requirements (by again luck I have Octopus Intelligent Go, and will give me cheap rate as soon as I plug in - what ever the time) - this does seem a little dated?

You are under no obligation to buy an EV charge point from the car dealer / lease company / electric company. You can approach a local EV charge point Installer from which you will get much better service especially when it comes to charge point faults and subsequent warranty claims.

Have you ever had an issue with Hypervolt 3pro? The PEN (according to Hypervolt) took a dislike to my supply which peaked at 252volts. It’s constantly hovering around the 250-251 Volts and only drops to around 247 at peak times and at those times the charger is happy. I think this is possibly to do with the substation being 100 metres away. My neighbour electrician tells me the NDO won’t reduce their output and he suggested a voltage optimiser to pull the voltage down to the charger. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Your thoughts are appreciated.

This must have been recorded some time ago as Myenergi has been working with Octopus “intelligent Go” for at least the last year. On the question of my install I had the first Zappi mk1 that became faulty and was replaced in warranty for the Zappi 2 it was also faulty as the connection terminals wouldn’t tighten up on the cable so a second Zappi 2 was sent out and now that Zappi 2 which is just over 3 years old is faulty! Thankfully I paid for the extended warranty and am now waiting for it to be replaced. Not a very good customer history! Hopefully fourth time lucky. Would I buy the Zappi again? Yes as it integrates with the rest of my system of solar and batteries so well, but I would definitely buy the extended warranty. My real concern is if the company were to go into liquidation.

Anything is better than the Tesla wall box. It's so ugly especially with the cable around it and it has no pen fault protection which makes for a costly installation as another box needs to be installed somewhere on your property.

Had one for 3 months now. Been reliable, easy to use, and app is very good. I use the app to set charging schedules for Octopus Intelligent Go, which gives you at least 6 hours every night for 7p/kwh. You also get as many additional hours as you need to fully charge your car if you need to.

Just bought the car preferred a hybrid as we tow a caravan and do plenty of local driving car has 30 miles electric range. I use a 3 pin charger and have a electricity tariff with an off peak rate (00:00 to 5:00) at 10p per kwh discount from standard rate (so approx 12p per kwh) , smart meter sends half hourly readings. The car is fully charged in 6 hours at 10 amps. As a bonus all electricity is at cheap rate 00:00 to 5:00 so run dishwasher during that time. Appreciate with a 7kwh charger and a full ev tariff might be 6p per kwh cheaper, but that is only 80p per charge (13.5 kwh battery) so even if charged every day a saving of £250 per year compared to £1000 for a charger & instalation.

The free (crap) BP smart charger I got with an EV purchase a few years ago has stopped being smart so I just use the car to control when I charge - which is always overnight on Octopus GO at 8.5p. I know exactly when the charge will happen and what state of charge I will have in the morning. Any spare solar then gets exported at 8p so the price I actually pay for being lazy is 0.5p / kWh. It would take many years for any fancy solar diverter kit to pay back. Of course this all depends on Octopus tariffs

@@artisanelectrics Certainly not 'cheap junk'! As for 4G, that is an answer to a poor wifi signal that besets many chargers. Anderson is overpriced and no Ethernet connection, that is poor design, never mind how 'nice' it looks!

@@ianmenai The 4G signal sounds like a terrible idea. Instead of being able to talk to your charger on your home network, you need your wifi to be working on your phone, the Ohme server to be working and the 4G network they use to be working. If you connect with ethernet to your house connection, you only need your phone's WiFi to work and you can connect to the charger, even if the whole of the rest of the internet is down (unless the charger software is bad at this).

@@rjmunro Several things in your surmise are not correct. The 4G phone signal is incredibly reliable! How often, when stationary, have you dropped a call on a mobile? The answer is very, very really if ever! Next, your connection to the charger via Wifi is via the Ohme server, not direct, so you need a good internet connection, and that is no better than a 4G signal! So the 4G connects to the server and then comes back to you via the internet and then to your phone, not from the charger itself! As many have found out, the Wifi signal outside the house can be flakey at best, non existant at worst. 4G solves this, as outside the 4G signal is strong in most of the country. It chooses the strongest signal, a be it Vodafone, Three, EE or O2. So that trumps a Wifi signal trying to get out of the house! So no it isn't a terrible idea, it is actually a very GOOD idea, and proven to work reliably over many years!

I live in not great 4g area, I get one bar on my phone but the Ohme always connected and asks me to authorise the charging within seconds of connecting to the car. I tell it my highest kw per hour price from Octopus and it works within that. Only thing cheap about it is the cable holder.

I bought the Simpson and Partners on the strength that it would work with octopus intelligent. It doesn’t. They argued that it would do and it plainly doesn’t. My car supposedly does support octopus, but it’s so flaky I went back to using Go and wasted a ton of money. Not impressed.

Having fitted numerous charge points over the years, after care service is a big factor in choosing a chargepoint. Andersen is non existent and went into administration earlier in the year. All looks but build quality hasn't lasted the 3 year warranty and the new team won't fix anything. Support has been awful. Functionality, tariffs and support has been better from the Myenergi team over the past few years.

One thing you forgot to consider is how much power the charger wastes when not charging. I have Hypervolt 2 for last 4months as 3 wasnt around. It burns 100watts with lights off and 200wstts with them on. Which is between 2.4kw and 4.8kw a day which in my case doubles my houses daily consumption. So I have to switch the charger when not charging to avoid waste full energy loss. I was lead to believe generally when off most chargers burn may be 10,watts or so like a TV but mine is really wasteful. I checked and my charger is working how hypervolt say it should 😵‍💫

I have a HV2 as well and it only burns around 8w in standby with leds at 25%. Something is wrong at your end!

Ugh! thats horrendous, not that it helps you but according to Hypervolt for the V3: The Hypervolt Home 3 Pro EV Charger has an average standby power consumption of 4.2 watts when set to the lowest LED brightness setting. When the LED brightness of the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro EV Charger is set to its peak it consumes 8.4 watts Maximum LED Brightness Power: 8.4W Other Standby Functions: These typically include maintaining network connectivity, internal diagnostics, and status displays. Given that LED brightness accounts for 8.4W of power, and assuming additional standby functions draw approximately 1-2W, the total standby consumption can be estimated to average around 9.4 to 10.4 watts. To summarise: Lowest LED setting 4.2W Full LED Brightness: 8.4W Additional Standby Functions: 1-2W Total Average Standby Consumption: 9.4-10.4W

In terms of future proofing, because the Zappi uses your home router, not a sim, if the mobile signal dies or 4g becomes obsolete (which it will at some point as has 3g), you still have a functioning car charger. You also have a touch screen display to control it with if your phone dies.

Don’t forget you don’t actually need an EVSE unless you do a lot of miles. A ‘granny lead’ type charger at 2kW plugged in for ten hours overnight for example will give you 20 kWh which should be good for at least 100 miles (YMMV).

Tell that to any electrician and they will disagree heavily, unless you know for sure that your circuit that your socket is on is totally sound and the socket fronts are of decent quality, i would be very wary long term using one, most sockets are not designed to withstand continuous use of 10A or more, you can get specialist sockets for ev and that would be more suitable for that use as they are built to a higher standard

No love for Ohme? The only must have feature on an EV charger for me is reliable Intelligent Octopus Integration which the Ohme and Zappi have. I have read of problems with the Hypervolt, does anyone have experience with the Hypervolt and Intelligent Octopus? I have a Zappi and integrating that, my heat pump, battery storage, and Octopus Intelligent with home assistant saves a small fortune on electricity. Solar integration is not as important anymore as now you can get 15p per kWh on export it's better to send your solar to the grid and charge off peak.

What happened with "Going back to basics?" You said this a few months ago in a video, that you were going back to basics. In that video, you said about getting back on the tools, etc... what happened? However, videos like this, 51 minutes with no meat on the bone except for 1 minute where you recommend Hypervolt, are not going to work IMO. Many of us subscribed for the actual electrical work, such as EICR, fault finding, new circuits, even a basic socket replacement. Not for solar PV or EV chargers. You need to do what you said you were going to do, and go back to basics. You need to get back on the tools, back to being an electrician, and not a suit. Your older videos were excellent, but these are just dull.

Thanks for your feedback. The opportunities to film in depth electrical content are fewer than they used to be now that I am running a company and not just a one man band. I must admit I am a bit rusty on the tools now as well! Its a constant battle because I love being on the tools but I have to put the company first and "you can't steer the ship while stoking the boilers" as they say... Maybe we can persuade Lee, Luke & Reuben to get back in front of the camera and do more videos for you guys! 80% of our work is Solar PV & EV Chargers now though so you may have to buckle up for more renewables content... its the future! Also 70% of our subscribers are new and have subscribed for the renewables and EV content so I can't please everyone (they might find an EICR or in depth electrical content boring...) Right now, my motto is to put out content that I think our audience will find valuable and let the algorithm work its magic and put it in front of people who want to see that kind of content. I do have an archive of all the footage from when I was working on my own back in 2019-2021 if you would be interested in a "from our archives" series! We could do a re-edit of the "Scout Hut" series for example. Just a thought. Let me know what you would like to see the most.

None of the chargers you listed appear to be future compatible with Vehicle to Grid or Vehicle To Home which will become a major feature from 2025 when EV manufacturers will start to mass produce cars that allows bidirectional charging e.g so cars can power your home or grid too. There is already a charger that has that feature that is recommended by Octopus to be used with their Power Pack tariff called the Wallbox Quasar 1 V2G charger but surely other major charger manufacturers should have incorporated bidirectional charging by now.

If you plan to utilise Octopus Intelligent Go (currently UK's cheapest tariff) then only 3 chargers are compatible. Tesla is not one of them.
