Good tip for fellow learners: i also becomes in when followed by words that aren't in Irish. So if you're saying a place name that doesn't have an Irish equivalent, you would use in, rather than i.

Déin, thanks so much for you videos. I’ve been slowly absorbing bits of Irish through osmosis since I landed in 2014. This is one of those nuggets that cuts through the thick and gets right to it. It really helps. I’m an objectively slow learner and I’ve been spending a lot of time in Fócloir and Teanglann and I could use some new sites to go when I’m not chatting with someone. These videos are very helpful. Stay well. Thumbs up.

Go raibh mile maith agat, a Dane!! Is cruthu iontach an video seo! You answered several burning questions I've been struggling with in this one. Without doubt the most challenging thing the beginning student of Irish faces is the bewildering array of initial mutations in Irish words, and the seemingly random way in which they occur. In one short video you gave a predictable pattern to something that has hitherto kept me in confusion. Thank you again! I love your channel! Nar laga dia thu! Go n-eiri and bothar leat! --N

I recently took a course of Irish classes. One thing I asked the teacher was, why do so many Irish people say 'haitch' instead of 'aitch' for the letter 'h'. His only answer was, 'it's not only Irish people who pronounce the letter that way'. Although I am an Irish man born in London, I am trained as an ESOL (Engiish for speakers of Other Languages) teacher. One thing I made a point of teaching my students is, 'h' is the eighth letter of the English language and it is the only letter to be featured in the dictrionary as a complete word. It comes under 'A' and not 'H'.
@clairemarie95978 ай бұрын
I was always told its a Catholic v Protestant thing, where Catholics says 'haitch' and Protestants or british influenced speakers say 'aitch' , I don't have any further reasoning or explanations though, so i could be wrong

How's it going dane, I see sometimes that a word starting with 's' sometimes has a 't' at the start of it, what's the overall rule for that?

Most of the words you are covering on your video i use on a daily basis. But I have never known what the real meaning of them and it seems that me and my family are miss using those words. I have been working on the family genealogy and I do find that most of my family did indeed come from Ireland and very little came from Scotland. I have always wondered as a child where do we get these words that we speak all the time from. I have always been made fun of for speaking the way I speak. Thank you for the insight

Dane, Another great video. Thanks for going over the uru and seimhu. In pronunciation I thought that the pronunciation for "bhí eagla ar Mháire" would sound something like "vee eggla or Wora" rather than "vee eggla or vora" because there's an A-fada in Máire next to the seimhu. Should seimhu sound slender? Hope you understand my question. If not, then it's all good.
@LearnIrish4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Brian, what do you mean by the séimhiú sounding slender?

@@LearnIrish Dane, I thought Mháire would sound like "wora" because the a has a fada.
@deddmann51554 жыл бұрын
In munster dialects they dont make the broad/ slender distinction for mh/bh. The sound will just be like a v. The time it sounds like a w is in the middle of words like amhrán

3:31 That's not entirely accurate (about “i”). “I” only means “in” not “in a.” Staid can mean both “stadium” (or state, etc) or “a stadium” (or a state, etc), as there's no Irish equivalent for a & an. But it's incorrect to state that “i” means “in a.” It only means “in.”
