Japanese people don’t really expect the foreigners to speak their language, so they get extremely excited when you do. It’s a very forgiving language, so even if you make a couple of grammatical mistakes they will probably understand you. They are extremely sensitive about making mistakes so they look as if they avoid foreigners but it’s actually avoiding making mistakes in English. So when you speak even only limited basic Japanese, they’ll open up and become overjoyed. Good luck!

No joke about the mistakes thing. I was an English teacher briefly in Chiba, and a lot of the kids would hesitate to answer questions just out of fear of embarrassment. Even my hosts would be shy to speak English, even though they were reasonably fluent. But when I would speak Japanese, they would very gently correct me of course, but it seems they were just genuinely happy to hear a foreigner speak their language.

Wow, I got JLPT N2 5 years ago and go to twitcast, and Japanese are less polite or friendly once your Japanese gets beyond a certain level, they are always finding excuses to belittle you or to not befriend you, they are nice to tourists, it seems like Japanese will befriend you but then they will give excuse after excuse to prevent the relationship from developing. I grew up on anime, manga, J-games, but I found the Japanese people extremely cold and unfriendly, and I find Chinese are much more genuine with foreigners. Especially Japanese women will never respond to messages and have a very narrow way of thinking。The Japanese were much nicer back in 2010 than they are now I believe as well.

I was shopping at my local supermarket where I live in Japan yesterday and this lady just randomly asked me why I didn't pick up the food on sale... she physically took a step back when I responded in Japanese as she didn't expect me to understand what she said. Had an interesting conversation about her using radio to speak English with people in the US and UK (she's in her 80s so this might have been back in the 50s).

Lived in China and Japan 20 years and learnt both languages. Can you PLEASE do a session on how EASY Mandarin grammar is because the writing scares people off. There's only 4 tones which people say are a hassle. But honestly speaking, Mandarin was a walk in the park compared to the mental gymnastics you have to do with Japanese. I do however LOVE the Japanese language so much.

I’ve spoken it since I was a child and I’ve noticed that people who regurgitate this opinion almost never speak natural sounding Chinese. I’d agree that it’s harder to be technically wrong in a textbook sense but it’s just as easy as any other language to sound wrong to natives used to the way natives say things. Maybe you’re an exception idk but it seems to me that this mindset leads a lot of people to neglect learning the way people actually say things and pat themselves on the back while sounding strange because it isn’t technically wrong grammatically. I get the intention of not wanting to scare people off of the language but I think this talking point being popularized does at least as much damage to learners as it does good.

@@user-fz8fp4nf6t Yeah, while the grammar and tones aren't too hard, there is definitely this "certain" alien feeling when speaking the language. It may be easy to get only the tones, but combining them with the correct pronunciation AND the natural way of speaking, to achieve the flow of the native speakers is VERY hard. It's probably the biggest problem, alongside the endless proverbs and cultural contexts/references. Not to mention how fast your confidence will dissipate after getting into a taxi and trying to talk with the driver 😆.

I actually might listen to you and start learning Romanian AGAIN. 😅 I used to study Romanian at university and since I'm a Bulgarian I can confirm there are a lot of Slavic words in Romanian. It's definitely so interesting and original. You could feel the Roman/Latin vibe, the Slavic influence and some Romanian vibe that doesn't resemble anything else at once. In my opinion the grammar isn't too difficult but of course there are some specific grammar rules that don't exist in the other Roman languages. I spent about 3-4 years learning it at university and I stopped learning it about 2 years ago. After I graduated I focused on my Greek and Turkish but in fact I had a goal to come back to Romanian before the end of this year. I don't know if I'll do it this month or in January but I guess it's time for me to reconnect with Romanian. 🇷🇴

Mastering a language as in becoming fluent takes years. Becoming intermediate doesn’t take nearly as long imo 7 different languages in one year isn’t possible unless you really dedicate yourself. You don’t want to become burnt out. Find a language you REALLY *really* like and focus on that one or maybe one or two more if you have a whole bunch of time. Just trust me on this one. You also will have way better results in the languages that you do learn! If you try doing what you claim to do you will just have very basic skills in a bunch of languages which you would most likely forget

Hindi is great language to learn. Only issue is still the scarcity of learning materials for English speakers who are complete beginners. I do believe that people from India could produce more of them to make others learn their language more easily. What given the demographic of India would benefit the future of the country. In my country we already have huge immigration of people from India but both immigrants and our own native citizens stumble upon a language barrier. With more materials for learners of Hindi available online communication in our local communities with immigrants from India would work much easier. What would benefit our business and cultural contacts.

Well, I liked how you started with Japanese and even though I've been to Japan 7 times (hoping to make it 8 in April 2024) there's no way my Japanese is anywhere near your level from 10 years ago. I will say I'm a step above knowing just enough to get around so I figured I'd start with your Intermediate level. After diving right in, so far it looks like I've made the right choice. Listened to the story the first time, got about 50% of it, listened to it again, got 60% overall and a third to 4th time got me to about 75%, admittedly with the help of Google Translate with the words I don't know. All this before even looking at the transcript (my reading is rather rusty, but I know I need to look at it!) and will probably NOT look at the English Translation unless I truly get lost. I'm hoping that won't happen.

My autodidactic language learning journey: Since childhood, this child (me) has native languages such as Balinese and Indonesian. I learned Malay easily because of the cartoons I watched since kindergarten. I studied English when I was in elementary school, ofc there were a few difficulties because learning in class was only once a week without tutoring (actually it could be through films or games) After middle school, I continued learning Japanese through anime or videos that use subtitles (so that it's easy to understand the pronunciation and meaning) then I learned hiragana, Katakana, and kanji. After that I wanted to be able to learn Korean, just to understand the meaning of the conversation of kdramas without subtitles and that was quite helpful even though the Hangul writing was a bit lacking. Currently I'm practicing Mandarin conversation through apps and watching c-dramas which made me interested in this language. Before learning a new language, you must know the goals and benefits in the future so that it is easier to understand the language.

Every word sounds either like a song (“lalelel” “soarele” “durerea” “mămăliga”) or they sound like powerful slavic energy (“războiul” “trebuie” “zborul” “droaie”) and the verbs and nouns conjugate and decline like your typical Romance language, but they do it in fun and exciting was. I recently became interested in the language because I stumbled into learning a bit about Hangul and found it to be hands down the best writing system I've ever encountered, and considering I was also fascinated by the Shavian alphabet for English, that's saying something lol. I've found a lot of conflicting info about Hangul, however. There's the version you covered with 24 characters, but also something I don't know if there's an official name for, but I have taken to calling Hangul extended, which includes those 5 double consonants you mentioned but also double vowels and other diphthongs and such, bringing it up to 19 consonants and 21 vowels. Maybe that's the wrong way to think about it, but I am just starting so I hope to have it figured out eventually lol.

Additionally, we have 9 letters for vowels, but around 17 different sounds for vowels. So it's a great language if you are interested in different sounds and rhythms. :)

Thanks for an interesting video, Olly. :) Do you know of any courses for these languages where you don't learn their 'alphabet'? Just learn to speak them. Might you make a video about 5? languages that use same alphabet (more or less) as English?

I really like Pimsleur. The courses are purely oral. There’s some optional reading and writing at the end of each course, but I skip it. I think a lot of people anymore think they need to get a new app for learning a language. Pimsleur has been around for longer, and it’s still excellent.

I'm a native Bulgarian speaker. English is my second language, French is my 3rd and now Japanese is number 4. For 2024, I'd like to finally pass JLPT N2 and perhaps brush up on my French, before moving on to possibly Mandarin.
