Everyone: 3D pop isn't a thing, Kasey. It doesn't exist. Kasey (exhales after taking a drag off a carrot that he's pretending is a cigarette): Listen, kid. I know what I saw.
@TK421-53Ай бұрын
Not everyone. It is a combination of lens, aperture, distance to subject, distance to background, the background. Some lenses have a specific way of rendering the in focus subject and transition to out of focus background in such a way you see your subject pop. Most modern lenses render such a way that the transition is smoother, it is flatter. Of course it is all 2d, but the way our brain translates the image, one has pop and the other is flat. But again, like good bokeh vs bad bokeh, the background is important to show the best and worst of a lens.

The thing with the 3D pop is the fall off of the focus area and non-focus area. And how smooth is this transition. And another thing is the imperfection on the corners. This makes the image lean to the center and makes it "more real". Because when we look to something the rest we even don't pay attention to them. The imperfection of the corners helps to stay focused on certain parts of the frame. That's why "3D pop" lens looks more natural, the fall off is more natural and the imperfections from the corner make the image different from center to corner. Minimizing the 2D look. Of course, the intention of video, and photography doesn't need to replicate reality, and makes this type of art. Is an expression, not a replication. So 3D pop can be more pleasant, but when this look has that purpose. If we need a total visualization of the frame, just use a normal sharp and clean lens. The problem will be the look. The separation in these lenses are weird, looks 2D or green screen, because the image has the same behavior from center to corner.

But, used it for shits and giggles on a recent trip to Sevilla and man, it's got so much character, the 3d pop is real! I'm a believer! I used the 16:9 crop, since the 23 is a tad too wide for my taste, and I was blown away

3D pop is not something we pay much attention to, so we rarely or never notice it. I recently watched a video comparing the Viltrox 20mm vs the Zeiss Loxia 21mm. The KZbinr who did the comparison was mostly focused on whether the 10x price difference was worth it, but his examples were great, because he had both lenses and shot the identical scene under identical conditions, the 3D pop was more than obvious with the Zeiss Loxia 21mm. But again, to emphasize, it was so obvious because the examples were placed side by side, if I hadn't seen what the Loxia shot looked like, the second shot would have been fine with me. (And now I am in love with Loxia lenses, it's a shame I'll never be able to afford them.)

I was looking forward to this video, great picture despite the winter haze. I would like to see what you think of the 60mm f2.4, it's a great lens with vintage character. Pop? Maybe. The autofocus may be objectively too slow, but it's half the weight of the 56mm. I agree on the 33 vs 35: I switched and I can only see positives. OK apart from the bokeh being busier on the 35. Keen to try the 50mm f2, 9 elements; I do believe the 90mm may pop because of the background compression and how sharp it is, but it's heavy to lug around. Thank you!

What conclusions would you come up with if you started with specs for a vlogging lens where a certain combination of focal length and aperture is desired? For real life use, it might be different specs for different settings: indoor or outdoor, close up or landscapes, objects in motion or sitting still. The choice of a lens will greatly vary between the settings and use. But my point is, what would to come up with if you started on paper with lens specs and scenarios, and then moved to lens quality? You can “design” several lenses with a range in focal lengths and apertures. Then, test for image stability and lens quality. And finally, select a body for the desired features and ease of use. Is this too nerdy?
