Hi Tony. I'm not a big fan of any 12 string acoustic guitar of any brand; however, my best friend in Shreveport, LA is a huge Taylor fan and has many of their AE models, as well as the T5 (all mint condition of course and they all live in their own cabin on property that is now a music studio 😄). I must say that he has THE BEST easy playing and sounding 12 string acoustic electric I've ever had the pleasure to hold in my acoustic loving hands, bar none!!! It is a 2008 Taylor K65CE Jumbo all solid Koa top, back and sides Custom Shop model. OMG, it is beyond description fantastic!

I bought my 214ce 9 years ago. At the guitar store, I started to try the cheapest Taylor guitar and then the model one notch above, and so on until I couldn't hear a difference between a model and the model above. The 214ce is the highest that my ears can appreciate, anything greater or better doesn't make a difference to me.

Whichever one I'm playing is my favorite Taylor. The six string guitars are strung with Elixir HD Light gauge (.013-.053), including the 818e. And my honorable mention is a Gibson J-200 Jumbo. I know it's not a Taylor, but it's in my rotation.

Tony , 5 Best Taylor’s Being a recent subscriber, I realize this episode is two years old, but I just watched it. I did not expect you to mention my Taylor guitar. But surprisingly You Did ! “Honorable mention“ LKSM12. Mine is an early 1991 model, I was able to capture it on a eBay auction in 1997 from a former Taylor factory tech who acquired it from Taylor. It was being used as a demo at the SD plant a one of a kind prototype. It’s built with stereo pick up, mic and a transducer also came with a pre amp and blender. Plus, Not Taylor but German made Schaller machine heads. It roars like no other 12 string on the planet. It came with Leo’s spec heavy gauge strings tuned down. It was not easy for me to play. In Time I had to change strings. I decided to go down to a medium gauge(instead of heavy) Earthwood Bronze and turned it up to Standard. For me it was easier to play and still sounded good. Like your opinion on that I’ve also more recently switched to light nano web elixir. The seller told me the this guitar was modeled after another guitar that Kottke like the sound of an Olsen jumbo 12 string( at the time I never heard of ) Not the Bozo what many people think. Story goes Leo wanted a solid Gig guitar to tour with that sound but not a $15,000 to take on tour. Taylor built the LKSM 12 & later the 6 structurally “similar” to the Olsen to hold the 12 heavy gage strings.

Just got a Taylor academy 12e for 400 pounds secondhand and it’s meant to be a beginners guitar but I love the sound and how easy it plays. I love the depth of a Gibson guitars and richness of bass. However, I’ve came to really love the more treble emphasised sound of the Taylor which still has a lot of nuance and it’s own depth. They got something distinct that doesn’t come through in other guitars.

I have a Gibson songwriter deluxe 2017 and I bought a Taylor GS MINI E Rosewood and pushed me to forget the Songwriter fully sound. It`s really an terrific guitar. The GS MINI mahogany sounds a little louder, a little bright and a little more warm against the GS MINI rosewood. The GS MINI Rosewood it`s closer to the Gibson sound than the mahogany, even being a Taylor. It`s just my opinion obviusly. Best regards

Tony, I'm glad you brought up the 2-finger isometric exercise. A few years ago I broke my left(fretting) hand and thought I might not play again. I even went as far as having my old Strat re-strung lefty to try to learn to play left handed! After weeks of frustration I was talking to a guitar teacher I knew and he suggested to just start slowly with playing right handed and gave me several exercises to get going. It took a long time, but I eventually recovered nearly all of my dexterity, even my physical therapist was impressed by the progress I made... If anyone out there is in a similar situation, keep trying and you will perservere!

In the last decade I’ve owned four different Taylors (currently three) and I love them all. Koa Taylors are both gorgeous in tone and looks but not the most affordable…I bought a koa mini last year and it gives me a glimpse of this wonderful tone wood without breaking the bank. Also, my 322e 12-fret delivers a warm and soft tone that not many people would associate with Taylor guitars. Love them all dearly.

First time viewer. I have a 2010 914c3 that I really enjoy and I'm amazed with the negativity I get from owning this guitar. Most the players in my circle are still hardcore Martin, so it's become a tough crowd.

My first expensive guitar was a Taylor GS5E. They discontinued this model along with countless others. I eventually sold it and started playing Martin and Martin style guitars. I haven’t looked at Taylor since. Actually I found a used 810 for a decent price but didn’t have the cash on hand for purchase. That guitar is also discontinued. My issue with Taylor is that their “supposedly” forward thinking leaves behind a brand identity. When I think of Collings - I think of a D2H, Martin - D28, Gibson - J45, Santa Cruz - 1934D, and so on. When I think of Taylor, not one model pops on my mind. Anyways, not a Taylor hater by no means, but their reinventing the wheel mindset ( specifically directed at V class bracing) and the discontinuing of models leaves me feeling they have no direction. They are some of the best looking guitars though. But I don’t dig their tone.

I love the GT size. I bought the Urban Ash shortly after it was released because as old as I am (staring 70 in the eyes) I have a hard time spreading my fingers. I joined a "jam band" which actually ended up do a few gigs last fall, so I'm seriously thinking about a GTe Mohagany for my next guitar. For as small as GTs are, they sound a lot bigger.

@@skentmar105 I agree that would be my choice. I just bought an Alvarez parlor mahogany because it was there and I wanted a smaller guitar. I am a Martin guy typically but the GT mahogany would probably be a great addition.

I think you missed a bet by not looking at the 327E - my 2020 version has mahogany back and sides and a Blackwood top. I call it a Taylor with a Martinesque like sound, since it has (to my ear) a slightly warmer tone and more 'blended' chords compared to my 914CE which (typical of Taylor) has more individual string articulation within the chord sound.

@@ronchappell216 I actually have a 2022 with a cedar top. Think I actually got the first serial number from the last batch, because they mentioned the cedar top option for the 714ce is being discontinued. Love the cedar top. Had a Lutz spruce 712ce 12 fret for a while but opted to trade it in for the cedar top because it was a little too bright for my tastes. Lots of bass response, don’t get me wrong. Quite impressive for such a small bodied guitar. But the Lutz top really takes a strong attack to get that top vibrating as it’s supposed to, which is something I just can’t consistently play with as a fingerstyle player. Thought about going with a 500 series but mahogany doesn’t really do much for me as a tonewood, popular as it is. Not there’s anything wrong with it either, I just see it as kind of basic. Doesn’t add or retract anything. Rosewood adds a lot of high and low end that I like. Takes a little more work to get that sound out of it, but that’s good if you play with a wide dynamic range. The cedar top speaks for itself when you play quietly, and the rosewood sort of EQs itself into the mix the louder you play. Big fan of the new 700s, but I think the cedar top option is important for the series, and discontinuing it is probably a mistake.

Like any manufacturer there is tremendous variation between the same model number within any brand. I have a Taylor 114CE when I went to pick it up I had the opportunity to try a 214CE, 314CE and a 400 series guitar. At the end of the day I chose the lowly 114CE it sounded better to my ear than any of the others. It's nice to see all these expensive guitar reviews but in all honesty very few guitarists can afford any of your top 5. Dollar for dollar the 114CE is the best bang for the buck and from what I understand is one of the reasons it was discontinued. Apparently it was taking sales away from their more expensive models.

I haven't had the opportunity to play most Taylors. Of the models I have played or owned, my favorite is a 414ce-r special edition. Spruce top, rosewood back & sides, V bracing, special neck and headstock inlays, sunburst. I also own a 414ce with ovankol and X bracing. These 2 guitars should not have the same model numbers because they neither play or sound anywhere close to each other. The 414ce ovankol is nice but the rosewood is simply awesome in tone and playability. The 414ce-r with V bracing is definitely worth trying before you buy an 814 or 914. Also, check out an 818 grand orchestra if you like more bass from your guitar.

Fantastic episode, Tony, as a dedicated Taylor geek I loved every minute of it. Amazing that you rated the GS mini mahogany in the #2 spot, that was my first Taylor. Since then, I've aquired a 214ce, 524ce LTD, 614 ce, 816 ce, K28e and a Custom GS BTO (Built to order, spruce top, Macassar ebony back and sides). Love them all, but the 816ce is the one I will keep for the rest of my life, no matter what. The 562 is definately on my want-list, did You hear that, Santa?? 🙂

Hey Tony! Another great show, the Taylor’s you mentioned were spot on, the Koa guitars from Taylor are just incredible. I would add the 612-14 series too, it has a torrefied top, and lovely maple back and sides with brown sugar stain. Also the 322 Blackwood back and sides series is great! I should mention I’ve owned both of those and now have a custom shop Martin! 😉 in all seriousness you put a ton of work and love into this show and I’ve come to look forward every Tuesday for this while on break as it makes the time go by and brings me comfort at work while I work at my totally non guitar related job that pays the bills. I’d be fine if I got paid in guitars but my partner probably wouldn’t be very pleased with that😆. You deserve all those incredible Bourgeois, Thompson and Martins you have, and thanks again for the content brother!

I've had a 612C for years and years...my guitar teacher, (who isn't a huge fan of Taylor's) raves about it's tone. And it's gorgeous to boot!

I don't see how you could do a lot better than a 322ce 12-fret. The blackwood is great. I also have an X-braced 12-fret 712e, and they make an amazing pair. I'm in a wheelchair and the difference in playability with the 12-frets is amazing! Thank you, Taylor!!!

Fantastic Taylor selections. I’ll heartily agree with Number One K24ce BE, it’s such a beauty. Those inlays! I play its little brother, 614ce BE, and I’m a big fan of Big Leaf maple, roasted the Andy Powers way.

I though for sure the 324 would be his number 1 since he has alot of the mahogany in his list. The 324 is the only Taylor I have kept. The right size, volume, tone, looks. A mix between molasses, caramel, sugar, chocolate, and honey... I have tried the smaller ones(322, k22, etc). Maybe the ones Ive tried were duds - don't know. It's up to Taylor to send out good ones, these definetly were not...

Great video. I own several Taylor guitars but none on this list. I guess my best Taylor is a 2002 all Koa K14. At that time they did not call it a K24. It’s master grade koa without the stain they use on koa guitars today. I also have a 517 BE, which is a very nice guitar. For what it’s worth, I’ve never cared for the GS mini. I understand the appeal, but it’s too small for my big mitts.

I also went to try a mahogany mini and ended up walking out with an AD12ce! So totally not sorry! Luv both of them! And my 2001 Seagull Artist also. Can’t forget my Rosie, she was my first love ❤️

I went back and forth for a month between the 314 and 324 and decided the mohagany top with the warmer sound was just too hard to pass on not to mention the beauty of the 324ce. I’d love your take on it as I spent a pretty penny on this guitar. It wasn’t an easy choice. Thanks so much in Advance!! -Ryan
