Taylor Guitars is one of the leading manufacturers of acoustic guitars in the world. Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug started Taylor Guitars in 1974 as two broke twenty year olds with a dream. Now the company builds some of the highest quality acoustic guitars utilizing cutting edge technology alongside new and unique designs. Taylor has never been afraid to experiment and try new things, pushing the design of the guitar further into the 21st century. With Andy Powers joining the company and pushing the design envelope even further it is safe to say that Taylor Guitars will continue to refine the acoustic guitar as it strives to make high quality, compelling instruments. As one of the Taylor Guitars dealers, Alamo Music has witnessed many of the changes that Taylor has implemented. Partnering with Taylor, Alamo Music has also been able to appreciate some of the many unique aspects of the company and what they bring to the acoustic guitar market. So if you are interested in purchasing a Taylor Guitar, here are three things you should know before you do.

Had a mini Koa GS for about a month. I was quickly sold on Taylor so I took the plunge. Traded it in for a 414ce V Class Special Edition Grand Auditorium. 3k? Totally worth it. Bucket list stuff man. I'm back to playing twice a day before and after work. 10 times a day on off days. It's a couple weeks old so it's still fresh but I'm like a kid on Christmas morning everyday now. It's a powerful thing man.

I'm a professional violinist so I have a very keen sense of hearing. I'm self taught on guitar. I've also had 11 hand surgeries due to all the high end violin playing. I first bought a Gibson then went back out of curiosity just to look at others. That Gibson was a Hummingbird. Believe it or not, I picked up many Taylor's and with the help of an accomplished guitarist sales person, I picked the 114ce. WOW!!!! so easy to play and the bass, midrange and higher end sounds blend beautifully. I'm one happy owner.

I have had the privilege of knowing Bob Taylor since he was making one guitar at a time in his garage…he (and his family) remain dear friends. I have never known anyone with a greater sense of personal integrity and generosity than Bob Taylor. Amazing individual and family.

I've heard that Bob is a really good man, Miriam. I applaud his wood sourcing ethics. When Bob built Taylor guitars by hand himself at the old Lemon Grove factory years ago, they were much better than the mass produced Taylor's sold today.

I don't own a Taylor guitar, still I admire when people commited themselves to achieve perfection in any sense. I strongly reject products which are developed just to be sold. The guitar is to be owned, loved and enjoyed, thus perfection and innovation should be considered in all aspects. Nice post. Thanks for sharing.

Just purchased my very first Taylor last week. Traded an American Strat for a new GS Mini-E Rosewood. I was browsing acoustic guitars in a local store looking for a travel guitar. I had went there with the intention of picking up a Little Martin. Tried it, and it didn't play or sound as good as I'd hoped. I looked over and saw the Mini but was put off because of the priced difference between it and the Martin. It listed for $699 and the Martin was only $350. I had absolutely no intention of buying the thing, but decided I wanted to at least try it out just to see how it sounded. From the moment I picked the thing up I was blown away. I could not believe the massive, crystal clear tone that was coming out of this tiny little thing. The high strings sounded like bells chiming while the midrange notes were warm and woodsy sounding. The biggest thing that got me was the low notes. They hit you like a cannon. On top of the full, perfect tone.... the thing played like butter! Low action, perfect intonation and a neck that seemed to melt into my hand. I quickly changed my mind about grabbing a cheaper little travel guitar, and bought my Mini. Haven't regretted it once, and I play it every single day. I am now currently trying to decide which full size American Taylor I want to add to my collection. That's how I found this video. I'm a new Taylor fan and can't wait to add a few more to go with my Martin's! Thanks for the awesome video!

I tried a beat up Taylor Guitar 25 years ago shear by chance when I bumped into a busker on Brighton Beach, we passed each other, and it changed my life. I have owned and played a Martin, a Taylor 12, and for the last 18 years my Taylor 315 is my go to acoustic. It's perfect for me, I do not need any other guitar. Do I have others.. sure, but they don't get much playing time with the exception of my family's hand me down 64 Gibson F25, which I like when I want short scale occasionally. It's worth the money for a Taylor, hands down.

Thanks again for all your great information. The thing that really hit home was the last thing you said about the greatest guitar being the one we are playing music on. Right on the money and something we need to remember. It's not a competition...it's just about making beautiful music, however we do it. That quote got me a bit emotional thinking about the guitar I've had for 10+ years as my workhorse that I'll be retiring for a new axe. I've never been closer to anything other than a lady, a little dog and my parents. It's important for me to remember that my inexpensive Breedlove took me a very all over the country as a performer. I can't forget that just because I purchase a new one with a fuller sound and believe that thought to be very important. God bless brother....great, fun and very informative.

I'm from South Africa and bought my Taylor CE312 in 2000. It came with a hard case and was fitted with a Fishman pickup system. From day 1 the first string was noticebly softer when amplified and the late Andy McGibbon (a highly skilled luthier at the time) tried various methods (tricks) to fix this problem but without succsess. The guitar developed a crack on the back in the center at the glue joint and another about half an inch from the senter as well. Cracks is also starting to appear in the regions of the bindings on the front. Originally it was a satin finish but has worn to a total shiny finish over the years. The sound however has matured very nice over the 23 years I've own it.

Played several Taylor guitars. One for several years. The action on a Taylor just seems to make for ease of play. Yes... action can be set for most all better level guitars but for ease of play... a Taylor is just so smooth. The tone is very good and they can be played aggressively and not top out (the higher end ones). They sound better than most other acoustics in a live plugged in gig setting. So... after searching for exactly what I wanted... I bought a Martin D-28 Marquis. Frickin' LOVE it. Go figure.

Great video, Chris. Nothing how knowing the story behind the product. I'm far from being a professional musician but, with the same honesty, I can say that I have a very sharp ear. The other day I was sitting outside in this bar courtyard, when the musician for the night started testing the sound with his guitar. I said to my friend: "That must be a Taylor". My friend then asked me, surprised: "Can you guess the brand of the guitar from its sound?". That moment I realized I needed to have one. Now the challenge is to find "The Perfect One". The one that is good enough to satisfy my old-man standards yet get the approval of my CFO (a.k.a. Wife). Your info was very useful. I will also look for that cutting board. Thanks again!

If I were not informed or familiar with Taylor guitars, your video may come across as marketing for Taylor.....BUT, for those familiar with Taylor and other guitar brands, the information in this video is factual, end of story. I have owned 12 Taylor guitars, and still own 5 that I'll never part with. I have meticulously educated myself on Taylor guitars for the past decade, and IMO Taylor has the most solid business model, efficient manufacturing process, highest quality control for mass produced guitars, and most ingenuities, than any other competitive large guitar manufacture. Andy is that next set of eyes, ears and hands to take Taylor guitars to that next generation. Bob has the foresight to think out of the box, not just as a business owner, and guitar maker, but as a contributor to the global society. The forestry efforts, utilization of product to minimalize waste, is amazing. In these areas there is no competition from other large guitar makers. Much respect and kudos to Taylor for not allowing themselves to be forced to remain within the box, they have set their own course. And thanks for pointing out all the good information in this video to educate those that don’t already know. Maybe see you in Fort Worth if you represent Alamo at the October guitar show.

I decided for my birthday in August I wanted to learn the guitar and have visited local stores and played many acoustic electric guitars, trying to decide on what I really love. The minute I picked up a Taylor 214ce dlx I was hooked. I waffled and tried to talk myself into a Yamaha (good too) but went back yesterday and I am the proud owner of the Taylor I mentioned above. I know loving what I have will make learning just that much better!! My only wish was that I could have gotten to San Antonio to Alamo Music but I'm in Northern California and I wanted to play my guitar prior to purchase. Thanks so much again for your knowledge and leading me to the guitar I was meant to have!

I was watching HSN about 12 years ago and saw Keith Urban selling his line of guitars along with his 30 songs in 30 days DVD's to teach you how to play. I bought one and then another and then another. They were all cheap guitars but they were pretty and they served as good learner guitars. They recently started sounding bad even with brand new strings so I knew it was time to upgrade. This video inspired me to buy a Taylor guitar. I didn't realize how bad my Urban guitars sounded until I played a Taylor 224CE-K DLX. Damn this is a stunningly gorgeous looking and sounding guitar. I also bought a Yamaha AC1M with a solid sitka spruce top for an alternative sound. Love both of these guitars.

Thank you for such a well done, informative video, Chris. This video, as well as your video detailing the differences and distinctions between the Taylor T5z and Fender Acoustasonic, are perfect examples of well researched, expertly presented and easily understood videos. I own two Taylor T5z guitars (a Koa and a 12 string), as well as the Acoustasonic, and your videos provided information that I never knew about either. I'm looking forward to many more of your videos to come.

This is a very informative video, and you now have another subscriber. Right now my only Taylor guitar is a 1992 412 (read: spruce/mahogany grand concert), bought new in Seattle. I think it was the cheapest thing they made at the time. I understand these days Taylor are doing some really innovative work with maple, which piques my curiosity instantly as I'm primarily a mandolin and violin player and have seldom been impressed with maple flattops. If any of the maple models are under $3k I may just have to find one and play it.

Very informative video.. the whole layered / laminate deal clears me up to not have to go broke on my next Taylor…once had a 314 ce that I absolutely loved , money issue hit ,it went to gc for some quick cash ,cue the regret….after awhile was solvent again and decided to try the new (at the time ) 414 ce v braced….I did not bond with that guitar very well at all …I assumed it to be the new bracing over other differences from my original 314…. So now hearing your explanation of v bracing I’m willing to give it a try (again) if the point on my ven diagram where money ,options and selections ( being a lefty limits options ) intersect… being a “payment plan buyer “ almost exclusively and the 314 ce lefty is never at those stores that offer payment plans …so am now really considering a 214 ce k deluxe since your explanation on layered calmed my nerves some …..and I believe that model(214’s In General )still uses x bracing ..would probably prefer rosewood if I had the option but once again being lefty I never touch a guitar till it gets here after I order it .. so I do get a lot of turn around on my gear ,and I really want to stop or slow that buy -sell routine that wastes a lot of money I don’t have …point being , I know this “ten things…” video is older , I but I for one appreciate it still today ….assuming things haven’t changed much since you recorded this lol. But boy do I really want a 314 ce …I really don’t know if a 214 k will meet my expectations lol….

I've had a 114ce for about 2 months now and I absolutely love it. The build quality is phenomenal for an £800 ($1000ish?) guitar. Frets were lovely and rounded, the nut was well cut and the finish is flawless. I've done about 15 gigs on it and the sound has been great. No crackle and great acoustic tone straight into the PA. The gig bag you get is decent too. Well padded and good stitching on the straps. The guitar came with elixer phosphorous bronze 12 gauge strings so I gigged it the day I bought it without restringing it. 10000% reccomend.

Not with my one. I am thinking about getting the action lowered a little on it. Barre chords seem a little harder than they used to be. Maybe my hands are getting weaker haha.
@joelwallenius2877
@joelwallenius2877 2 жыл бұрын
@@jamesmunro5368 Lower action would make the intonation worse around the 12th fret... the intonation is far from perfect as it is. But, it's wrong in a good way, because it's usually a bit under the correct pitch, so you can bend or push down harder to correct it a bit. But, thanks for the information. Mine is defective for sure then, I'll go change it tomorrow.
